This is a F1 car I've always wanted to build. I'm plaining on building Jacques Laffite's Early 1979 JS11. So I will be using the BOLD GITANES Lettering and for the Blue I will be using............oh ........I dont know if I want to get on that subject. LOL ;D The first thing I did was asked about what blue to use.......never mind. Then I argued with myself about what blue to use. Then I looked at F1M to see what the Pro's were saying...........never mind I looked at Pictures (Which most look like TS44 which we know is too dark) Some, like on gurneyflap.com looked like TS10. I looked at Video (More like TS 23) Even Michael was trying figure it out also...... So I asked my Magic 8-Ball what to use?......I just got "Dont count on it" for every answer. I looked at Tamiya.com....they said use TS15 WRONG! not goin' to happen! Maybe I should wright to Dear Abby in the news paper about the problems with ........No! No! dumb idea ;D LOL I know I say Flip a coin Heads - TS10 Tails - TS23 ;D Well anyway we will worry about that later.......moving right along ;D The one thing that bugs me right off the bat is the side plate of the side pod, On the early 1979 car it had more of a rounded radius on the back part. So...Glue some plastic on it, then after it drys sand the correct radius down to the correct shape. Engine has some detail going on, making the aluminum block look real by doing the.... thinned..... out..... flat.... black.... trick ;D..............simple enough More to come.....sometime..... BTW I dont even have magic 8-Ball LOL

Does anyone know where you can get a set of decals for this kit? I just bid on one of these on eBay then after rereading the description discovered that decals are missing! At this point I hope I get out-bid.

But you sure don't want to use the factory kit decals......Unless you want a Yellow and Blue car

I also intend to offer an option for just the red stripes for the nose, cowling and fuel tanks for anyone who wants to paint the solid white area. As for the color, I'm still torn. TS44 is definitely too dark. TS23 is a little too vibrant, although I am leaning toward it. TS10 is probably most correct. I'm restoring mine, so this has me wracking my brain too.

I was looking at your examples on F1M.....The players car is defiantly IMO too vibrant.......but what do I know ;D I think we should just trust Tamiya with there TS10 French blue, If I use TS10 I might give it 4 coats instead of 3, just an idea. Also clear coating it might also give it that extra buzz? Or some other trick? I dont know?

There's still a chance I'll do a mix, but I hate airbrushing bodies.

I have a tamiya sheet for this car if you want it. I love this car and am planing to build the Heller 1/12th kit, as for the color, I have looked at many photos of it when it raced and at vintage race meets. I have seen it look dark in one and lighter in another and parts of the car lighter and darker in the same photo! Many things can effect the color in a photo, exposer, film ,processing, color balance during printing, age of film or paper, the conditions on the day the photo was taken (sunny-overcast).I have little knowledge of digital photography so I will not even go there. I doubt I will ever get to see a Ligier in person and have always been fond of Tamiya's French Blue so I will most likely use that. Lance

Michael,
Will your decals be in 1/24/5 also? I'm enlarging an old Entex kit car.

Hi Patrick - I can make them available, but I can't guarantee they'll fit right. Also, aren't the Entex kits more like 1/28?

Oui, but after I'm done slicing and dicing it'll be about 1/25. Can someone post the plan 4-view so I can make measurements? Merci!

Another color option - TS23 over TS10. The difference from just TS23 is subtle, but the TS10 underneath takes just a bit of the vibrancy off the TS23.

Thats an idea Did you by chance try it out on a scrap? I dont have those colors yet.....But I guess I can get some and try it for myself. Maybe we can use the famous Tamiya transparency to our advantage.

Maybe we can use the famous Tamiya transparency to our advantage. I sprayed 3 pieces of white plastic... one TS44, one TS10 and one TS23. I then sprayed TS10 and TS 23 over TS 44 and TS23 over TS10. The results - they are not as translucent as I expected. TS23 looked the same over TS10 and TS44. TS10 showed only a very slight darkening over TS44.

TS10 showed only a very slight darkening over TS44. Better than nothing, I guess. Over Grey primer theoretically should help also? BTW I finished up the modifying the rear part of the side plates last night, looks good.

Also, what would be the best Blue to use on the seat? IIRC the directions said Flat Blue, but I think X14 Sky Blue looks better from looking at the paint chart?

pg 16 in 1979 on the Schlegelmilch.com site has a perfect example of what I'm trying to do with the side plate. Notice how it has the nice swooped radius.

Here's a couple more good Ligier reference sites: ligier.chez-alice.fr/www.car-mag.jp/contents/old/js11.htmlthe first one is particularly useful - click on the galleries and you can pic whatever Ligier you want to look at. When you click on a thumbnail it will open the image in a small pop up, from there you can open the image in a new window and see a larger version. The second link are recent pics of a Ligier on the vintage circuit - this car really looks like TS23

Wow those are good sites, thanks for the info The first link's pictures have TS-10 all over it and like you said TS23 with 2nd link but I can see somewhat of a TS10 in some of those pictures?

I have to say I have yet to come across really good images of the JS11 or JS11-15 taken at the time they actually raced - even Schlegelmilch's photos leave something to be desired. Pretty much every image I've come across looks like they were taken in bad conditions or with cheap film in cheap cameras or both.
Conversely many of Schlegelmilch's photos of cars like the Ferrari 312T look like they could have been shot with modern digital gear.

Totally agree, like for example my cheap camera makes the blue plastic darker than it really is. I'm still thinking I will just go with the French blue. I just dont see why Tamiya would get it so wrong when they seem to get all there other colors correct? Besides we do not know if that is the correct original paint on JS15 that is run in todays events? Look at how many paint and decal flaws are on todays vintage race cars, I cant say I would totally trust it?

Yeah, I've seen some horribly reproduced vintage cars. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual plastic of the Ligier kit is the correct color, but there is no TS paint that matches it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the actual plastic of the Ligier kit is the correct color I was thinking the same thing too, with some clear coat, it would probably be what we would be looking for. Right or wrong thats the shade of blue that I personally would want on it. Darn! I hate to say this....but we might have to leave our Tamiya comfort zone. Some of the Tamiya Paint haters right now are probably laughing at us! (I'm saying that with a smile )
