These kits look great what a job you do for an individual. A curiosity question is looming in my head. With the advancements in 3D printing, what is the quicker method? I am just wondering if someday this type of casting will be as almost obsolete as blacksmithing is today.

I've wondered the same, but until 3D printing can give me as smooth a finish as Lance and Kevin, I think the main use will be to create more accurate masters.

I have seen 3d printed items that rival injected plastic for smoothness and others that resemble 100 grit sandpaper. I have no doubt that in the not to distant future computer designed and 3d printed kits will be commonplace and be able to offer accuracy beyond what I can do. I have seen product and talked with people who are printing and selling Sci-Fi, gaming pieces and figures that are printed, not cast and they are amazing and printed at home! Jim, we went to my Mother in-law's for dinner which spared me from having to clean off the dinning room table.

You creative geniuses cannot leave extraneous material like that lying about when showing us WIPs.
Mate of mine is casting me another 1/32nd jobby and sent a pic. I immediately asked him about the two other subjects in the background!
If there is one thing we all do is we look for the next tasty thing......

Is that a drawing on the table of the Lotus 64? Yo!u are such a tease! Stu, I like the drawing on top of the Lotus 64, the 69 Coyote/Ford. At least that is a car that qualified for and ran in the Indy 500! It was one of four cars that A.J. put on the pole! Now that would be a great kit! Yes, Lance is such a tease! Jim

Casting is faster and more cost effective for production runs. Casting isn't going anywhere yet. In fact at Shapeways they even offer 3d printing in wax for the express purpose of making molds.

With the advancements in 3D printing, what is the quicker method? I can knock out a full kit in less than 1 hour, casting. It would take a home 3d printer days to print out a full kit. Casting isn't going anywhere soon.

With the advancements in 3D printing, what is the quicker method? I can knock out a full kit in less than 1 hour, casting. It would take a home 3d printer days to print out a full kit. Casting isn't going anywhere soon. You have to take into account that companies that are doing 3D printing have multiple printers running at one time. An Indy car with limited parts count running on multiple printers I'd guess would take about 15 hrs based on my own experience printing some car bodies. The single piece body taking the most time. I'm finding that the 3D printed parts are requiring less and less cleanup as suggested. I have recently purchased a 3D printed Eduard cockpit for a Grumman Wildcat that is absolutely out of this world. No clean up and detail beyond what could possibly be replicated in a cast piece. Its not so much that casting is not going away but what is possible with 3D printing and the level of detail will be what customers will migrate to as the bar for level of detail will be raised. 3D printers are very affordable, and the learning curve is quite low. I see the future of modeling definitely headed towards purchasing .stl files and printing your own model. Imagine only having to design the .stl file and sell it. No making molds, no casting, no waiting for supplies.

Here's some Borrani wheels I just printed. There's definitely a place for 3D printing. Don't forget, an average home printer can produce at least twenty of these in one printing.

Craig: WOW! What scale are these? Can you print and sell them? I’ve been looking for less expensive options for 1/25th vintage Indycars for a looooong time… Tim

I hope to have the last of the resin poured by the end of this week, that's the good news. The bad news is I still have not found anyone willing to do my investment casting so this will put a temporary kink in things, hope to have this problem solved soon. I am not taking anymore orders for this car as I need a break, I will make up a few more later this spring. I thank everyone for their patience and will continue to keep everyone up to date on my progress.
