Here is my vintage hydro videos.
I was not very happy with the video I took of the exhibition - I was trying to take both pics and video in such a short time and I was wound up at the same time with that big 400mm.

Just to give my life experience of hearing these beautiful engines for the first time in a long time is they a nice loud rumble but not to the point they aren't eardrum blowing but they are a nice rich roar that is very pleasing to the ear. That's just my IMO.
and to answer Duane's question, the Griffon is definitely louder than the Merlin. When the Merlin started up - everyone knew it and when the Griffon started everyone really knew it.....so overall I'd say its a few notches louder.
Here is just the Atlas and Bud passing by....the video is not good but the sound is good enough to get a fairly close feel.
BTW watching this on a cell phone IS NOT going to give you the true sound experience!

I am very thankful for Calvin's photos and videos. Living in Maryland, I would otherwise not have an opportunity to see and hear these great machines. Also, its pretty slow around here this summer.

Living in Maryland, I would otherwise not have an opportunity to see and hear these great machines. Also, its pretty slow around here this summer. kip Your welcome! If I was well enough I would have stayed all weekend and take in more of what was going on....I would stayed in the pits more, took more video, go see the 1/8 scale RC hydro races in the park's pond.....take in more of the vendors. I was only there for 3 hrs on Friday and it was not enough time to do very much....one of the main problems was the pits are a good 1/8 of a mile away from where you could see the track and I had to keep on going back and forth. Then if I was well enough I would go to Seattle this next weekend for the next race and go to the hydro museum and pick up some more hydro resin kits and some vintage T-shirts Maybe next year I'll do the northwest trifecta - Coeur d'Alene (just 40mins away from my home), Tri-Cites, and Seattle.

Today's theme is the "Turbinator!" Thats what they call the U-3 Allison powered GO 3 Racing teams boat (I even got there Turbinator T-shirt) I first saw the boat then I turned around and saw the beautiful 1,700 c.i. V-12 Twin Turbo Allison that produces 3,000+ HP. As a model builder of course, I took advantage of that opportunity for some detail shots! Here is an awesome on-board video looking back at some piston power!

well that was neat to watch. those turbos have a nasty habit of spitting at low rpms. no doubt you can hear the difference when it goes by at full song. duane

those turbos have a nasty habit of spitting at low rpms. are you talking about the water injection spitting out? I believe that is perfectly normal at low RPM.....as it speeds up it goes away and if you can view it at 1080 60fps you can see the water nozzle spraying into the turbo...its pretty cool!

Miss Budweiser slowing down with spray shooting over the sponsons. Here she is slowed down completely at a low idle, rollin' coal! (can I say that? )

i wish they could get some tv coverage again. with all the sports channels that exist you figure someone would cover them. duane Yeah it would. But I'll be watching on LOCAL TV today! Both Washington races are broadcast live on Local stations....the rest of the races are on ESPN3.com .....It would be great to have national TV highlights like they used to. It would be not in the best interest in the channel to do complete Live coverage as there is so much downtime between heats. But overall it takes money to get on national TV....H1 did have Air National Gard as a title sponsor and that used to pay for the TV coverage but then the government cutbacks happen in 2013 and they pulled their sponsorship....then of course the TV package went as well.

I recorded the final - it was pretty wild and exciting but, unfortunately was decided by a penalty. But they really had them 'aired out!"

cool stuff! i wonder what the flashing red light inside the cockpit was for. Its an idiot light for N2 All Unlimiteds carry onboard digital recording devices that capture different streams of data, from engine speeds and fuel flow to wing angles and temperatures. All turbine engines are limited to 4.1 gallons per minute fuel flow and less than 115% “N2″ speed. N2 speed is a pre-determined upper RPM limit that the engine cannot exceed for more than five seconds. The data recorders log these two critical data streams and are reviewed by officials at the end of every qualifying attempt and heat. Fuel flow and N2 violations will void a qualifying speed and will disqualify a boat from the Heat in which violation occurs. So if that red light stays on for longer than 3 secs and the driver doesn't notice and doesn't let off the throttle, it will be bad news for the team.
