How much do you think this 3 blade 16" prop cost? Its such an important part that it gets treated like gold! it's probably worth more than you and i combined calvin. and while i understand the need for the canopies now, i sure miss seeing the drivers upright and in sight working the wheel. duane

The props are worth $15,000 and they usually break a couple a year!

OK Calvin. You've got me hooked. I know these boats used to race on the Potomac--like 40 years ago. Do they now come anywhere near Maryland? I gotta see this in person.

OK Calvin. You've got me hooked. I know these boats used to race on the Potomac--like 40 years ago. Do they now come anywhere near Maryland? I gotta see this in person. kip Nope. And its been years since there was an east coast race...... the closest this year will be Madison, IN. The schedule was looking pretty good for this year but a lot and I mean a lot of bad luck happen with many of the race sites. First of all the schedule is down to 4 races! Madison, IN - Tri-cities, WA - Seattle, WA - San Diego, CA All in last 2 months we lost: -Cour d'Alene, ID (30mins away from me) not enough money -Detroit, MI (Not enough money) -Doha, Qatar (Political issues) then last year we lost Folsom Lake Sacramento, CA (as the lake dried up!) There is talks of returning to Owensboro, KY The problem with this form of racing is it requires the use of everyday large bodies of water and with all the environment politics involved these days it makes it EXTREMELY hard to put on a race. The reason why the teams were testing in Tri-Cities last Friday is because there is simply no other place friendly enough to do so.....they used to test a lot in Seattle as most of the teams are located in Seattle but all the environmentalist would absolutely freak out when the big boats are on lake Washington. There used to be a time when they tested all the time. But as Green politics keep going I'm afraid our motorsports will be doomed especially ones that require public land or water like hydros.

wow, that is really hooked up and screaming. The hydro experts are excited about the runs the U-96 was doing Friday.....as its a fairly brand new boat (Less than a year old) they cut the front of the sponsons off this winter and re-designed them and it looks good! I think it will be right up there with the Oberto and Graham Trucking this year. really a shame to hear they're down to just 4 races. Yep, next year should be better as our new Chairman Steve David (former driver of the Oberto) is really working hard and even though we lost races this year the fans still really have his back and are very supportive of him. they probably miss the bigger than life personalities like bernie little. duane YES indeed! The Budweiser money really helped the sport with sponsoring a lot of races and a good TV package on ESPN. Berine Little was good friends with August Busch and thats why Bud sponsored for so many years....but after Bernie died in 2003, Budweiser pulled their sponsorship after the 2004 season.

I just thought I would follow up on this....Detroit is back on the Schedule! Thank goodness! So back up to 5 races! Detroit is pretty challenging and dangerous course.....usually 1 boat blows over each year....3 blew over in 2012 www.freep.com/story/sports/motor/2015/06/21/hydroplane-racing-detroit-river/29062701/This week, UAW-GM and Detroit Riverfront Events Inc. plan to announce the return of hydroplane unlimited racing Aug. 22-23 to the Detroit River.
The race will take place between Belle Isle and the Detroit mainland over a 2.5-mile course, in the same location where past APBA Gold Cup contests raced.
Hydroplanes have been a part of Motor City sports for a century. The first sanctioned race took place in 1915 and the first Gold Cup race in 1916. Since then at least one hydroplane race has been contested every year in Detroit, with only a five-year hiatus (1941-45) due to World War II.

I'm trying to remember didn't you say someone you knew was in the Elvis movie? It was just a shot of the crowd but you were able to pin-point someone?

yeah, my friend dale irwin was in the crowd shot in the grandstand. her dad stan was who got us started going there. he started in motorcycles, then midgets and then a 266.ci. hydroplane. i worked at stan's engine shop in hialeah a couple of times where it grew into one of the largest places for mercruiser warranty work in south florida. he was some kind of guy. i wished he had done an autobiography as it would be worth reading. i believe he was a navy paratrooper and on the use yorktown when it was sunk at midway . duane

It'll be close. So if you think Indycar has skimpy schedule then think again......

Man the hits just keep on coming! It was announced a few days ago that Oberto is out of Hydroplane racing after this year. In the hydro world its one of those iconic sponsors that has been around since 1975. So no more 'Sharkey" after this year. madisoncourier.com/Content/Sports/Sports/Article/Oberto-leaving-H1-Miss-Madison/185/974/91283I would like to get a chance to see it one more time in 23 days for the Tri-City Gold cup....I would like to go down on Friday for the dash for cash and the vintage hydro race.....it would be my last chance to get some pics of Sharkey and then I also heard the vintage hydros are going to be the Griffon Bud, Blue Blaster, Miss Bardahl, and Miss Thriftway! (I'm really getting worked up as I need to get to SEE THEM!!!!!! THOSE ARE MY FAVORITES!!!!!) I have never got to see the Griffon Bud! My favorite! It would be an honor to blow my eardrums out seeing it go by! LOL
