I didnt tell very many people that I was going to do this but we borrow a motorhome and took off to see the unlimited hydroplane testing on the Columbia River in Tri-Cities, WA today.....we are currently on our way back home but I did VERY well! ( I starved myself for the last 2 days to make the trip) This was the first time getting out of Spokane in 3 plus years. It was 90 plus degrees in the tri cities today and I handled it very well I was out in the sun for 4 straight hrs. First time in 3 years being in that kinda of sunlight. There was three boats running and testing.....about 1000 people showed up to watch......I decided to go to a test day instead as its calmer for me, also better for talking pics as the race in July will be WAY too overwhelming with 80,000 people. When I get home I'll post pics of what I got.....these pics are what my mom got on her cell phone.....as you can see I'm a good 45 lbs under weight.

I still have more than 300 pics to sort through But here are the three boats that ran today.....this is my first time doing motorsport photography - I'll be posting more pics in the coming days....It will take a while to get thru 300 pics... These pics were all under 150 mph I'm guessing (usually race speeds are 190 going into the turns)......I think I got some faster shots but these are the best ones so far I've seen..... U-7 Graham Trucking II U-9 Les Schwab Team Red Dot U-96 Spirit of Qatar There should be a total of 10 boats that will compete for season championship this year.

Calvin Good to see you out and about. Great photos. You gotta do a model of the Graham Trucking. Great looking boat. kip Thank you! First of all just getting out and doing a small trip like that was basically a milestone for myself and to also have it be relating to my passion of motorsports is a plus! Oh yeah, I've always liked this Graham Trucking II scheme. Actually this is the number two (II) boat that Jesse Robertson will be driving and J. Michael Kelly will be the number one boat which is in the opposite color scheme of red with black accents. I also have many videos as well to go through but here is my first video so far.... The Graham Trucking team did a trailer test of the freshly installed Turbine. They use a single Lycoming T-55 L-7 that runs on Jet-A (kerosene) fuel which produces 3,000 Horsepower.

Here is some more pics I took today! My favorite so far is the Canadian goose family watching the action! LOL (look for the baby gooses) and the in the same pic the U-7 Graham Trucking II is getting a little air and you can also see the skid fin. Looks like the Tri-City herald was standing right next to me during the Canadian Goose shot. www.tri-cityherald.com/2015/05/29/3584476_unlimited-hydroplanes-get-jump.html?rh=1

I dont know if its good or bad that the gooses are not completely in focus? The main attention is the boat but in this case should the gooses be in focus too? To make a great picture? Thats my only hang-up......

Looks like a great time to be had there, Calvin. Glad you got out and there were no health issues holding you back. Your photography looks great and the Graham II is a great looking hydroplane - hope you can get that one on the bench sometime soon!

in this case should the gooses be in focus too? Only if the boat is out of focus. So basically having the "gooses" slightly out of focus would be proper?

As I said above I took video as well but, unfortunately all the test run shots I did get were off the pace. Plus I shook a lot. I just took all the video and combined it all in 6 mins

Only if the boat is out of focus. So basically having the "gooses" slightly out of focus would be proper? You should have one focus point even if there are two elements of interest. Like other rules of composition, there are times this must be ignored ;-) But here's a case where it applies. This photo just wouldn't have worked if both dogs were in focus.

Here is some driver pics from yesterday I took....I only got 3 of the 4 drivers.....I somehow I missed an opportunity to get Jean Theoret of the U-96. But in the first picture J. Michael Kelly is doing a trailer test run, Scott Liddycoat getting in the U-9 Les Schwab, and Jesse Robertson getting out of the U-7 GT.

How much do you think this 3 blade 16" prop cost? Its such an important part that it gets treated like gold!
