So now that I have Miller High Life decals finished, I need to build one up to put on my website. First I assembled the drivetrain and cockpit. I then did some modifications to facilitate an easier build. I removed the front suspension pieces, then separated the bottom of the tub from the undertray - this will allow insertion of the assembled cockpit after the tub has been assembled and painted. I drilled holes in the tub to re-attach the suspension and inserted brass pins into the ends of the suspension pieces. This cannibalism of the kit isn't nearly as difficult as it may seem. I glued the top and bottom tub pieces together and used milliput to smooth everything out where the pieces go together.

I decided to go all out - I'm doing the whole front row! In the meantime, more progress on the Miller car

Michael, what are your thoughts - accuracy wise - on the AMT wheel covers?

Michael,
Will your Miller set also have the #1 that came with the kit? I can't wait to get these. Thanks for the offering.

Michael, what are your thoughts - accuracy wise - on the AMT wheel covers? Jordan If you putty them up like I did, they're fine. I'd rather leave them off, but they were on at the start of the race. It appears the front and rear covers were different - the rear covers had the three holes in closer to the center than the front. Speaking of covers, page 60 of the 88 Hungness yearbook shows Sullivan's car with a cover over the fuel nozzle, whereas Mears and Unser had the nozzle exposed. I also notice that the rear wing on Sullivan's car is white behind the green stripe - box art shows it gold in front and behind the stripe.

I think he qualified an all white car due to a crash in the primary car so if you don't want to do the gold an all white car is appropriate. Same decals.

Michael, it might be me but I think the roll bar on Unser's car is a bit skinnier and taller than Sullivan's & Mears car. Just thought I would throw some more anal info into the mix. LOL!

Stu is exactly right. At that time, a rule was in place which correlated the height of the roll hoop with the top of the driver helmet. There was even a tool to measure it. Michael and Mario were especially aggressive about this. Simply stated, the lower the driver sat, the lower the hoop could be and vice versa.

Unser's roll bar looks about equal to the kit roll bar - whereas Sullivan's and Mears look shorter.

My only point is that it is highly possible that roll hoops can be different, depending on the driver and car.

Just FYI... I'm on vacation for the next 5 days... If anyone is planning on ordering anything, you might want to wait until next week.

Michael, any chance of doing a quick tutorial on how you tear down and re-assemble that car? I'd like to try my hand at doing something like that.

Not much to tut ;-) I cut the undertray with an Xacto saw, cut the suspension off very carefully with a #11 Exacto blade. Used a pin vice for drilling holes for the brass wire that will be used to re-attach the suspension. I'll have more pics this weekend. In the meantime I noticed that Unser's car had a yellow rear wing support whereas Mears and Sullivan had black. Source - Popely's Indianapolis 500 Chronicles, page 330.

Three tubs primed and ready for painting I drilled open some vents and added some screw holes. Also opened up the radiator openings One mod that needed to be made was the triangle on the undertray in front of the rear wheels. This is supposed to represent a support wire. I removed this and replaced with real wire: Painted the bodies:

I forgot to mention - the worst part of the build - the radiator exits on the sidepod. When you attach the insert there is a big gap that has to be filled with putty and sanded down, very difficult sanding. I ended up trimming down a sanding stick to get into the tight confines.

I am so glad to see this - I am also working on the '88 Winner, and the side pod seam is driving me insane! (Very short drive - closer to a putt!) At least it's comforting to know I am not the only one, AND that the seam really should be filled. I was not 100% sure about that, did not find photos that showed it for sure! Thanx! Tom
