EDIT 7/28/14: Changed mind from doing the 2013 Oh Oberto to now doing 2014 Oberto instead (See post bellow)Just another WIP I've been working on forever.... Since its the weekend now and everyone goes away and the forum goes quite I though I would flood the forum with all of my WIPs! I started on this a long time ago and I really dont know what direction I'm going with this. I decided to put the salt water intake on this boat as the Oberto team always ran it no matter if it was a salt water race or fresh water. The rear wing is on. Tying to figure out the cockpit area is going to be interesting!

You have a real thing for those big intakes lately. I know very little about the unlimiteds, why does it matter salt or fresh water for the intake?

why does it matter salt or fresh water for the intake? Salt water absolutely kills turbine engines so they do everything to keep the salt water out of the intake. The hardest part for them is taking off from the dock at slow speed, they have to get the boat "on plane" as soon as possible to reduce the splash of salt water over the boat.

I went ahead and glued the canopy on. The hard part about this is the clear parts will have to be masked and most of it have to be painted silver.

I had to add some milliput behind the canopy to make the extra body work that is there. It will be fun when I get around to doing the masking job on this one - it WILL be more challenging than Miss Budweiser IMO.

You have me hooked on these hydroplanes. Where does the basic kit come from? Thanks for your weekend WIPs. You are right, the weekends at the Forum are pretty slow lately.

They pretty much all look good when Calvin gets finished. Thanks...we try. I'm actually really looking forward to this paint job. Its one of those very hard ones that are scary which I get a thrill off of. What I plan to do is white first, then mask off all white, paint bright red, paint Park green, then the silver.

After watching todays hydroplane Tri-Cities Washington Columbia cup on Local television all weekend I might change my mind and build this boat into 2014 version as it would be easier for me to make ink jet decals for this years paint scheme. More silver and fluorescent red and green and less white decals. Since I have now one else to talk to about this race I guess I'll talk about here. The Oberto team won this years race which had some carnage and one blow over during the final heat and the U-21 basically disintegrated and almost sunk. (No good video has surfaced of that wreck). But the most impressive thing about the weekend was heat 3B when Jimmy Shane in the Oberto and Dave Villwock (Who came out retirement this weekend - winningest hydro driver of all time) crashed into each other coming out of the last turn. Villwock's boat rutter failed and it went straight into the Oberto and put a huge hole in both boats. The Oberto team was able to fix their boat with all sorts of stuff to get out in time for the final heat 40 mins latter......I got to watch almost the whole repair process on live local TV and it was kinda fun to watch (for us builders that find stuff like this interesting) So they got it fixed and won the race...it was crash and win. H1 posted a good video of the crash on their FB page (Let it load before playing or it will just skip) www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=748242381884068&set=vb.112392332135746&type=2&theaterAlso Oberto posted an on board on video....it show how much harder of a looking hit it was from inside and how the boat almost got airborn. Also it was a record attendance for this race 70,000 might have been just as much as the nascar race at Indy today (we wont go there) So basically one of the largest races in the northwest. Thanks for reading! LOL!

Also an interesting inside look at the cockpit of an H1 unlimited Hydroplane.
This shows how rough the ride is. (3:36 OUCH!)

You know Calvin, there is a market out there for modern pickle forks and decals. No reason that you couldn't expand your inventory to boats too. After you release the new DW12 and Lotus 34's of course! Paul Erlendson

I really dont think so....it would have to a be a labor of love to do resin hydros.....I got so many projects going on that I couldn't imagine starting anymore resin kit projects. I need to build up my resin business with strong selling items before dipping into "not so popular things"

Nice work so far, Calvin. I see the driver/pilot did straighten the wheel a bit before impact - seems pretty smart.

I made up my mind I'm doing this year Oberto boat instead of last years...why? This years scheme is growing on me and I like how there is less white decals as I will be making my own ink jet decals from scratch (I hope)

I fixed the image. I do not think it is Photobucket's fault, looks like Calvin changed the folder names so the links were not pointed to the right place.
Looks like the bodywork is pretty smooth, nice progress my friend.

I love these hydroplane WIPs. Can't wait to see it in paint. Makes me want to open up a whole new area of the modeling hobby. I agree with Paul Erlendson, you should produce these wicked boats, right after you sell me some 1964 NOVIs, of course. (Smiley face goes here, but I don't know where to find one.)

I agree with Paul Erlendson, you should produce these wicked boats, Thanks, if you ever want to learn more about the sport then you know were to find me....I've been following the sport for little while now.....its almost the complete opposite of car racing in how things work. I have no idea if I would ever do a hydroplane kit.....if I did it would be a 1/48 1980 Miss Budweiser ....aka: Griffon Bud. With that said the fluorescent red is now on....my anxiety is gone now! My can of Tamiya flo red is almost gone....it was a good can. ^^^^Kinda looks like a fantasy "Miss U-Haul" at this point. LOL next I will paint on the fluorescent Green! With Tamiya PS-28 (RC paint) When ever I walk into the RC section of the hobby store they always ask why is a static modeler doing over here? I always say "stealing your Flo paint."

The Fluorescent Green is on! Without the silver on yet this really looks strange! As you can tell I didn't knock myself out over masking lines as the silver will cover right over any color without any trace but before spraying the silver I WILL have to make sure I put the masking lines in the correct spot.....I will also wet sand down the Flo red and green paint edges just so there wont be any lines in the middle of the silver section. Then after the silver is down I will have to spray Tamiya Smoke and blend it out. oooooh!
