Oh no! Here we go again! I just got this today. One of things about me is I love many forms of motorsports and one of them is Hydroplane racing! This is a 1/25 scale Testors kit - this is my first hydro model....its huge! I get so use to seeing 1/25 cars but when I pulled this out of the box I surprised actually but shouldn't be because I've seen these in real life. I love the old hyrdo's especially! Nothing beats the roar of the big 1,650 cu. in. 3,000 hp Rolls Royce Merlin V-12! The total weight of the boat is 6,250 lbs. The great thing about this kit is its for ages 10 years an older! None of this 21 years and older BS of today's politically correct world! Its going take a high about of glue to get this body together....a H..I..G..H....a high amount I said.

This is going to be the first WIP thread in the history of this forum to have a commercial break!
When you say BUDWEISER!..... you've said it all!

I got the body halves glued together (the most glue I have ever used in one time!!!) and I got that Big ol' Merlin glued up as well. The instructions say the Rolls Royce Merlin was built by Packard and they used them in the Spitfire in WWII. ^^^Just to show what a 1/25 1,600 ci Merlin looks like compared to a 1/25 Offy. The supercharger is almost bigger than the Offy engine block! LOL

I've always been curious about this kit. Anybody that likes speed is familiar with Miss Budweiser.

Does it come with Chip Hanouer? Have you thought about putting the Merlin in a Watson roadster to give those Novi's a run for their money? LOL Jordan

Most of the Packard built Merlin engines went into the Mustang, Calvin. The Spitfire used the Rolls Royce engine. The sound of a P51 on a low pass is some of the best music you will ever hear IMO. Take Care Craig

Take Care Craig OK, I still dont know much about this stuff as I was taking the word of the kit instructions.....I guess thats why my Dad was a little puzzled by the "Packard built" when I read that to him.

LOL Jordan No it doesn't come with any driver.....wished it did though..... Ron Snyder was the driver in 1978 and Bernie Little was the famous long time owner of Miss Budweiser. LOL! I think the engine weighs more than a Watson's total weight!

But I dont like the decals (1978) They are the dreaded peal and stick! and it does have a waterslide sheet as well for the smaller logos (old and yellowed) Back then they would average about 120 MPH around a 2.5 Mile oval. About 110 in the tight corners and 170 in the straight. They used Nitrous Oxide on the straights.

Rolls Royce designed and built the Merlin engine for the Spitfire. The P51 was, with it's initial Allison engine, too underpowered to be much of a dogfighter. Then someone got the idea to put the Merlin into the P51 airframe, so Packard was given permission and the plans to the engine, so they were building the Rolls engine in their plants. The rest is history. The Mustangs had the ability to escort B-17s to Berlin and back, cutting casualties down by 75%. One of my favorite stories of the era is Hermann Goering seeing a Mustang flying over Berlin, turning to his compatriot and saying "The war is over, we've lost".
Thanks,
Scott

I grew up watching these bad boys racing at Miami marine stadium. the sight and sound of 5 of these coming down for the start with black smoke pouring out of the exhaust each time they'd hit the nitro button is something you'll never forget. if you get a chance to see it, watch the movie "Madison". it's a bit corny but does a great job of capturing the sound of the engines. also check these guys out. they do some nice casting of the old unlimiteds. www.craftworks.com/hydros/hydros.htmduane

I'll have to do some checking out! I didn't know about Craftworks - 1/48 scale seems way more manageable than 1/25 IMO. My first time going to an Unlimited race was in 2007 at Tri-Cities, WA. That was the day I fell in love with the old Hydros.....nothing beats the roar of the old piston engine boats! The new Turbine ones are great but I get more exited about the old ones.

Just to add a bit to Duane's post, Craftworks kits are really decent and include great decal sheets with markings for mutiple boats. Also in this scale you can switch out the kit engine for an awesome resin Rolls or Allison engine made by one of several aircraft modeling aftermarket companies. Craftworks' website needs to be updated as it doesn't show their Slo-Mo-Shun IV hydro and a hydro boat trailer. They may even have their 'pickel-fork' style hull boats ready by now. Sandy

I grew up watching these as well. My parents had a place on the Ohio River that we went to every weekend and boated just outside of Madison, Indiana. We would watch them race every year from boat and shore, it was always a great time. Those boats were massive being truck in on their sides. Good Times!!!
