This is a great day for Indycar modeling. I never would've guessed we'd get a new indycar plastic kit, again.
25 years later and it finally happened again.

Impressive that it is fully licensed and that the decal work is premium.

1/24 or 1/25 scale?

1/24 or 1/25 scale? Paul Erlendson Follow your instincts, Paul. I am going to speculate that Tamiya will announce a new 1/20 scale Indy Car kit and Michael is the source for decal info. What the hey. Could I actually be right? Lol Paul Erlendson

1/20 scale is a great size. It matches the most recent Model Factory Hiro kits. Let's face it, all is really need is one speedway and one road course and we are covered for several years of liveries and drivers.

To me, this is the greatest thing since Calvin first posted a photo of him working on a nose for the ‘82 Wildcat and Michael doing fluorescent decals to do all the “cowboy” cars. I hope it’s 1/24 or 1/25. Although 1/25 scale is mostly what’s offered in the cottage Indy car modeling industry (yes, and 1/43 too), 1/24 would compliment the quality of their stock car kits. Tamiya can keep their 1/20 scale niche even though they do make great kits.
I hope those involved get rewarded for their work to make this happen. As in sales. I know I’ll be up for a lot of them.

I like 1/20 scale for open wheel stuff but wouldn't have cared what scale they chose. They'll just go onto the 1/20 scale portion of the display with the Tamiya F1 cars and 93 Lolas.

If we want the next car in plastic, we had better support this one. Our first new mold plastic kit in any scale since the 1999 Reynard in 2000 from Revell.

I have to give Salvino’s credit. After the success they’ve had with the open wheel modified kits they jump right into Indy car kits. Takes a lot of guts to pull the trigger on it. And bringing Michael into it really shows some smarts. Hopefully for all of us it’ll pay off. Duane

I am happy that Salvino JR is putting out a new kit of an Indy car. However, I am a little disappointed in the scale for this car, I would've preferred 1/25th scale. First is the cost, I would think that a smaller scale would be less expensive. Second there are very few 1/20 scale Indy cars. There is the old MPC Turbine car and the Tamiya 93 Lola. There are a couple of resin 1/20ths, but that's all I can think of off hand.
There are far more 1/25 scale Indy cars and it would've made for a better donor kit along with many other possibilities for a new car in 1/25. I certainly will purchase a couple in 1/20th, but not as many as if they were in 1/25.
Just my 2 cents, Jim

Time to be brutally honest. First off, yes I love 1/25 scale, it's my preferred scale. But I also can see the big picture and see what's dieing off and what is growing.
Our little niche of indycar modeling is so small compared to the mega big F1 modeling community. There is hundreds of thousands more F1 model builders than indycar model builders, I don't even think we would show up on the radar.
It would make sense from a business point of view to try and capture that F1 crowd.
Indycals most successful indycar decal sheets are the 1/20 Tamiya Lola's
I have a feeling that 1/20 indycars is the new trend. I'm definitely going to be looking closely and I'd be more than willing to offer 1/20 scale indycars in the future.

However, I always look at history, because when we forget we are doomed to repeat it. With that said, I also always think of Tamiya's Lola. The reason it sells the most decals is that that's been the only Indy car kit ever to come from them in 1/20th. However, there were no other follow-ons from Tamiya in that scale because they could not sell their Indy car kit in the amount needed like the F1 cars! That is why we have not seen another major manufacturer producing an Indy car for another 30 years. The MPC Turbine is the only other 1/20 kit and that only was built in one scheme, so you would not see the amount decals sold for that car. The 93 Lola had many good customer teams in 1993 so there were a lot of schemes to choose from and build. I just always look at the Tamiya kit and think of all the possibilities that could've been had it been in 1/25th scale. It would've been an easy conversion for a 92 or 94 Lola, plus all the Buick Lolas. Think of all the decal possibilities then? I will definitely buy a couple of the Salvino JR cars should they produce them, but I certainly will not buy them by the case like I did the AMT and Revell kits. Now if Indycar stays with the "cookie cutter" cars that they now have for another couple of years you may have something there. That was another issue with Indy cars is that they would always change style year after year and it was hard for model companies to remold a whole car and get the sales needed. So, we shall see. I would hope that someone like yourself would eventually do the current Indy car in 1/25 scale to go with all of my other 1/25 scale builds Jim

Frankly, I am pretty stoked about it being 1/20. I invested in multiple copies of the MFH version and like the scale. I also have several F1 cars that are in 1/20 as well so they match. And let's face it, having a modern version at any scale is a step in the right direction.

What an emotional roller coaster I’ve just been on. The wind from my sails has subsided. One less hop to my step now. I find nothing cooler than working on and holding a 1/25-1/24 scale model. Even just looking at other peoples builds in person. It’s just large enough for failing eyes and still small enough to be impressive. I may sound like a traditionalist but I like larger scales when I want to build and display a super significant piece. And 1/20 scale just looks close enough to 1/18 scale die cast that anyone can buy. And I think we all take pride in the “built not bought” line. When Hot Wheels and Autoworld came out with their die-casts in 1/24 scale, I bought and still have many for future projects and have also build them into real models from the toys that they were. I get the business side of it but I too just went from buying buy the case to maybe 1 or 2.

As Calvin said - my best selling Indy car decals are 1/20: 93 Lola (mostly Newman Haas and Foyt) and the 67 Turbine (despite it's rarity - it sells. A lot).
Most builders aren't stuck to one scale and I don't even try to cater to any one scale. I do my thing. Salvino does their thing. Replicarz does their thing. If what we put out doesn't satisfy someone we're not going to worry about it. There will always be someone who wants something more or different.

Guess we should actually be happy that anyone is considering a new Indycar model kit. It really is the most competitive form of motor sports out there today and hopefully the world can start seeing it.

Welcome news! I was hoping for a kit of the current Indy cars in any scale. I will be buying multiple copies of this along with what I assume will be a multitude of Indycal decal sheets.
Do we know the time frame for when this kit will hit the shelves?

Of course I would need to study the kit, first. But I do have thoughts of making a back-date 2018-19 conversion kit for the 2020-23 kit.

I'm definitely going to be looking closely and I'd be more than willing to offer 1/20 scale indycars in the future. Look at it the other way Calvin. I'm an F1 builder, primarily. Why? Because almost all the 1/12th or 1/20th kits made are F1 cars. Make an Indycar model in 1/12th or 1/20th and I'll buy it, no questions asked. Truthfully I detest 1/25th scale, I only build them when I want the car and there's no other option - my Trans Am cars fit that category. So I'm pretty happy with what Salvinos is doing.
3D printing is going to change the dynamic too, because how hard is it to resize what the printer's doing? There are people who will print something for me (Texas3dcustoms, for example) in any size I ask for.
Just my 3.3 cents worth (exchange rate factored in)

Another question is will the kit have Road Course wings? Just guessing here… I would think they will offer 2 variations. Road coarse and speedway. One with Honda engine and one with Chevy engine. That covers the possible combinations. It’s up to you to mix and match.

Even though they have distributors for their NASCAR kits overseas, they want to sell directly around the world with these kits. Rick Salvino is also a builder of Tamiya F1 kits himself, so he personally likes that scale, which I’m sure is an influence in that regard. Rick is a real good builder, too. I’ve seen his work in person, and he buys Top Studio and Pro Tech stuff from me at ScaleProShop.com. Speaking of the shop, I expect to have some in the store. And if you’re interested in them, don’t sleep on it because I am pretty sure demand is going to outweigh supply, at least on the first few releases. If anybody is interested in checking out the modifieds, I’ve got the last four releases at scaleproshop.com still. The first two sold out. They’re great kits, and I have one in progress, but I haven’t had a chance to post anything on it yet. I’m shooting for finishing it by the end of October. Art

Any idea on price?
Not really my forte, but if Calvin were to do conversions for the older version, I'd buy a couple.
