1/12 MFH T1G WIP

I've been inspired to put this here as another tribute to one of America's greatest drivers. It's a MFH kit that I recently started. It will be a fairly slow build since I tend to jump around between my started kits as the mood strikes me. Of course, it will be the Spa winning car. First a couple of photos for inspiration.

This looks really interesting. I have trouble looking at pieces twice the size I am used to working with. This is truly a historic car and one of a kind. The first photo certainly shows what was known as "drift" in the days before all the wings and stuff.

This will be tons of fun for you. I also have one of these, and by God I WILL build it one day.

Do you have many reference photos? I have quite a few and could share them with you. You may have some which I do not.

I splurged and bought a magnetic polisher. It is fantastic for polishing white metal. I also learned from another modeler that Meguiars metal polish with a buffing pad on a Dremmel will polish white metal to look almost like chrome.

I've run some white metal pieces through a mag polisher a friend has and like the shine it creates, but I don't like the slightly bumpy surface. I have used Simichrome polish and Flitz (both 1:1 metal polishes) to good effect. I usually start with a brass brush and then use very fine steel wool. I've also tried Novus as seen here.

I polished up and assembled the monocoque pieces. First brass brush, followed by 0000 steel wool, and then a buff with simichrome polish. Trying to get them to look like an aluminum tub.   Tried pics with and without the flash to show the shine.

Since the monocoque is assembled, I spent some time tweaking the body panels into shape.

I got tired of forever drilling holes, so I decided to do something that would show some results quickly to stay motivated. I got the wheels out and sprayed some color on the centers. Then I carefully sanded down the high spots. Valve covers were done at the same time.








I also got some color on the engine and trans.

With the rims painted, I added the lugnuts and valve stems. So the wheels are done.

Thanks guys. I can't believe it's been so long since I updated this build. But I hit a snag. The fuel distributor is powered by a belt coming off from the back of one of the heads. But the supplied belt melted itself to the plastic bag it was inside of. For the longest time I was looking for a substitute rubber band that was the proper size, but was not having any luck. Then not long ago, in the middle of a bike ride, the solution came to me.





I laid down some Tamiya masking tape and sliced it thin enough. Then I looped it around a dowel. It took a couple of tries to get the right diameter. After getting the right size, I blackened it with a sharpie. Then installed the bracket and belt.

Exactly.. That's why I put a problem WIP aside while my brain finds a solution.

I got the rest of the fuel lines routed to the injection pump. And got a start on the spark plug wires.

Thanks Gary. I'm trying my best to do both this car and Dan justice.


Except for a couple small P/E parts, the engine is done.








Since the engine is almost complete, the next thing to do was to get the engine bay ready for it. I did some wire brush work on it, followed by 000 and 0000 steel wool.

Nice work on the head lettering, been thinking through techniques like this and glad it worked well for you. The engine detailing is very good.
