I am building two of these conversions for two team members. The most difficult part of this conversion will be two things. First, the anodized pink/purple chrome looking paint and the same pink/purple chrome stripes that flow on top of the side pods. I have a couple of ideas how to do this but will let you guys know which one I go with soon. Going all out on these and adding two different styles of carbon fiber decals to the chassis and suspension. Will redo the seat, belts, buckles and steering wheel too. Here we go... Sorry Pippa Mann donor car but you are out of here!

Here's a photo of the car from above if that helps. Flickr reduced the resolution quite a bit, and I have more photos, so let me know if I can help.

Looking forward to this one! Beautiful car to see on track and in person. As much as I love florescent paints on IndyCars, the chrome is really good looking contrast on track, too.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Mike Shank and met Jack at the Mid Ohio IMSA race this year. They're both class acts. I'm looking forward to watching this come together, your work is always fantastic.

A bit more going on than it seems with this build. At first I bought an automotive wrap to recreate the chrome pink/purple of this car. While it may be fine and dandy for a full size car, it's a bit to thick to wrap a 1/18th scale car with it. Using a heat gun some areas turned out great where others like around the roll bar were let's say less effective. My only option is to try and paint and the first attempt was less than desirable. So, I am waiting for another brand of paint to see if I can possibly paint it and make it look like the real thing. While I am waiting I decided to try some 3D detail parts design by Chris. (sadler21) These parts are amazing so my thanks to Chris for creating this stuff. The kit I bought has a new steering wheel, dash, steering wheel paddles, switches, knobs, etc. It also came with new brake rotors, PFC brake calipers, backing plates and hub assemblies. While many of these brake parts will not be fully seen, knowing that the car is that much more accurate and detailed is what I am going after. Even though I already added carbon fiber decal to the Greenlight parts, they are going back in the parts box in favor of these 3D parts. The below photo shows you the difference in the 3D parts verses the Greenlight parts. More to come!

Painting the pinkish purple chrome has become a thorn in my side as I have painted the body three times and stripped it four times. I think I have it as close to the chrome wrap now as I can get. First airbrushed with a black base, then Spaz chrome, then light coats of transparent rose magenta. Now to do the rest of the car and hope it's uniform.
The real car has carbon fiber showing on the rear wing tips so I wanted to recreate it as well.
More to come

Considering the trials of the paint, I'd say that's pretty spot on. I'd be happy to get that close, myself!

Years ago I read about guys using nail polish thinned with lacquer thinner. I don't know if this is a viable option to reproduce the foil wraps that are gaining popularity. I just thought I'd throw it out there. Having done that I must say the paint on your car looks great!!

Looking good! I have been wanting to try the Spaz chrome on a diecast but wasn't sure how it would turn out. I had read that it has a tendency to flake off easily. Anxious to hear your thought on using it. On a separate note, have you considered using a layered decal process for the purple/pink on the side pods? Gary at GWS uses that method to get the chrome-ish copper elements on his Wheldon 2011 Vegas decals, I wonder if that might work for this project as well.

Matt Bishop (not a forum member) wanted me to mention the following....
"There is a lacquer that is that color or nearly identical... It is Duplicolor Brake Cast. This is actually a suspension/brake paint and comes in spray cans at auto parts dealers. There are 3 colors available a candy red, blue and purple. The base color determines the tint and shade as does the number of coats."

Very nice. What are you doing for the tops of the sidepods? Jordan This gets a little tricky Jordan. I have already sprayed a piece of chrome bare metal foil which will lay on top of the side pod. A made a black decal printed on clear decal paper that I will overlay on top of the bare metal foil which will show the stripes. I have tested it and it works but waiting to do that last and then clear the whole body.

Nicely done! Any adehesion issues with the Spaz Chrome? No as I used the Spaz black base 1st. If anything the rose magenta does not adhere well to the Spaz chrome. I have had two separate small issues with it flaking off that needed to be touched up. In fact the decals don't want to adhere to the rose magenta either. I am being very careful to make sure each decal is laid down flat and all the air is out of them. Then I hit each one with decal softener. Still I have lost a few decals that have lifted and had to replace them. Looking forward to clear coating the body soon.

You are the king of conversions with this one no doubt. That car is looking great and I imagine when it is all done it will look even better. Wow and not only one but two. When you get both of them done take a picture of both, that is a lot of work. Great job and thanks for posting the progress.

I was thinking about ways to do Newgarden's Chrome Strike car from a few years ago and was thinking about using Spaz Chrome, Candy Blue and Candy Red but wasn't sure if they worked well on diecast. This car still looks awesome though. Full kudos to you for attempting such a challenging build and sticking with it. I am sure the final product will be nothing short of spectacular.
