Ok here is one I have never seen done before. 1955 was a tragic year at Indy with the loss of two drivers Bill Vukovich and Manny Ayulo. The fatal crash of Vuky is well documented, Manny's is not. Manuel Ayulo was born in California the son of a Peruvian consul. a graduate of Hollywood High he became part of the "California Invasion" of drivers like Ruttman, Vukovich, and McGrath. Manny spent much of the winter 0f 54-55 working in Frank Kurtis shop on the car that would become the bright red #88 Schmidt Special. The night before his fatal accident Manny spent much of the night alone, working on the car in the garage area. With only a few minutes remaining in practice on the eve of time trials. Manny jumped into his car his pocket still bulging with wrenches and drove headlong into the SW turn wall. The investigation determined that a broken axle and a pin had come loose from the steering arm. A big thank you goes out to Tim and Gary for their assistance in doing this kit. Tim provided me a set of resin for the old Monogram kit. and Gary did the custom decals for me from old photos.

Really nice Dr. Dave. Everytime I find a detail on the model or in the original, I can go to the other picture and see the same detail. Great job. And your history lesson kind of answers this question I had a few months ago. mb2501.proboards.com/thread/7924/indy-deathJordan

Wow! Thanks for the history lesson as well as a superb model. You are right; I have not seen this one done before. The Schmidt cars were always so striking and memorable. Jim

Looks great, it's another example if what you can do with the Monogram Kurtis. Thanks to Tim, then Calvin, and now Ed, and Tom there are almost unlimited options. Gary, and Michael's decal work make lots of possibilities.

Sad story, one of many I am afraid. Super nice work on the model, an excellent tribute.

His widow married Indianapolis Star writer Jep Cadou.
I don't agree with your cause of the accident, but I'm not here to educate anyone! It was a simple cottor pin issue.
