Just created my account. I build 1/43rd scale metal Indy Car models (SMTS, Ampersand, Tameo). Looking for sources for the correct colors for both vintage and modern Indy cars.

I have 3 models that I need Pennzoil yellow for. Saw another thread that seems to indicate that Tamiya Chrome Yellow is the one... Also looking for the "Guardsman Blue" that Dan Gurney used for his eagles in the 60s.
I'll post in the appropriate threads... Thanks guys!

Well, you picked 2 that almost guarantee a debate. I will start, and then back out. 66, 67, 68 Eagle TS53, or TS89 69, 70 Eagle Navy Blue Hall, or early Penske Pennzoil TS16 with a TS65 top coat Panther Pennzoil TS16 Calvin will be along soon, I'm sure.

Love your AAR logo by the way! I have all of my dad'd patches from when he was in the Gurney Eagle Club. Even the large Gurney Eagle that was on the back of the jacket and a Charter Member path. The jacket fell apart so I had them transferred to a new jacket.
Anyway.... wht about the paints from Model Car World? Seems like everyone here likes Tamiya...

I was sure that would get Calvin started. He is so predictable. He loves a chance to use that Uncle Bobby photo, surprised he did not jump on the Eagle blue. Many of us don't like to use an airbrush, so cans are our first choice. For me, the Tamiya metallics are much more scale like than anything else I have used. Everyone has their own favorite paint system, whatever works for you is the best system. I use Krylon primer, Tamiya, Krylon, and Rustoleum color, and Testors "wet look lacquer" clear. Yes, I am a bit of a Gurney fan. Again, Welcome, some great folks here. Craig

I am REALLY liking the TS47 Chrome Yellow for the Pennzoils (1980s). Am I off base here guys??? I know about the debates that can develop. I have been painting military miniatures for 35 years and this always comes up when discussing uniform and equipment colors (Prussian Blue or Navy Blue? ?? )

If you like the TS47, then that's what to use, it's your model, you are the only one that counts. I'm good with that, and Calvin will get over it, in time. For me, it's turn on the compressor, mix the paint, test spray, adjust everything, spray the body, clean the airbrush, wait 15-20 min, check the body, if you need to do any touchup or try for more even coverage, do everything all over, vs warm up the can, spray the body, check, and repeat if required. For some things, the airbrush is a must, but always a PITA for me. A great Hobby Shop is located in Ypsilanti, Mi. They have a great line of paint, and do Mail order. check out the website "The Model Cave".

Okay... 2 more color questions... Mario Andretti's "Beatrice" sponsored Lola T-900. Any particular red??? Also, the blue and white of the Unser's "Valvoline" Lola T89?

Okay... I lied! I have 2 more... 1989 Lola Chevys driven by Michael and Mario Andretti. Am I looking at just a plain black and white? I have some Tameo kits to build and also have 2 already built models done by another builder. The white he used is just slightly off-white, not stark white. From the photos I have seen of the actual car, it appears as if the white is plain stark white. Also, what are your thoughts on the Kraco car pictured below?? As always, I thank you guys and value your feedback. I promise to contribute more as I get back in to building again! FYI... I found that the 1 minute J.B. Weld is OUTSTANDING for gluing diecast parts!! Wow! I had some models to repair and that stuff is STRONG!! Thanks to a thread on this forum...

Hi Mr. Paxton from a fellow Hoosier noob. Welcome to this great place I stumbled upon, and have learned so much from. I too am a huge Gurney fan and have been since the 1963 Indy Lotus adventure. I have the same patches, some now on their third jacket. Rex

Off to a great start, man! Welocme aboard!! You see, you've even pulled some sacred cows (mates, don't take this bad!!) into the debate. Me, as I haven't seen an Indycar in person (er... not exactly! ***) cannot help with the TS47 and TS16 decate. But I usually participate similar debates for the Renaults in F1. I may say that Kraco yellow looks more TS47 than Pennzoil's... but then again someone will prove me wrong. I'd do that: if Kracos are more orange than Pennzoils, I'd assign TS16 to latter, TS47 to former. Also the MIller Lolas seem to be more orange than contemporary Pennzoils. But follow the great advice: make your mind and BUILD!!! ;-) (***) I actually saw a Valvoline 1988 March in person, but nowadays I am not sure if I would choose TS15 or something more purple. I love Humbrol's royal blue which is also great for Brabhams. It's in Tamiya acrylic tonlets, but not sure there's a TS equivalent.

That's true, Mike, but I like to support the small shops whenever I can. The Model Cave does only plastic kits, and supplies. They are great people, and have a "shop dog".

I did not mean to knock the local or small shops, just meant to answer the question. As it is, I've never ordered Tamiya paint from Scalehobbyist (just armor kits). I usually get Tamiya paint from the local Hobbytown because I can have it "today". Mike

I would love to support my LHS... except that they carry no inventory! The last 5 or 6 times I have been in there, they have been out of whatever it was I was looking for (including the Tamiya paints I tried to buy this week...

HELLLLLP!!!!
The Tamiya paint is a disaster! It is so thin that it runs down to the low points on my model and pools. I have 6 thin coats on my model and I can still see the primer! I am using the yellow for a Pennzoil car.
Again, I am painting 1/43rd metal models. I need help!

Strange, but paint problems seem to be a fact of life for most of us. Basic stuff, I know, but did you, use white Tamiya, or Krylon primer? shake the hell out of the can? heat up the can, in hot water until you could barely hold it? wait 10-15 min between coats? If yes to all above, you might have gotten a bad can, it happens.
