I used Krylon primer and it was grey. Probably not the best choice due to the use of yellow overcoat. But the thinness is killing me! The high points on the model are not holding the paint. I will take some close up pics and post them here.
I will probably be stripping it all back down to metal and trying a white primer. *sigh*

Very good information here. I will re-read this several times, I am sure! I believe the main problem I am having is the grey primer. I need to put some white down instead. The second problem is that I have not used spray cans in quite some time. I need to perfect my skills and get used to it again. Also, just started building again after a 10 year break! Gotta go strip down all the parts I started and start over!!!

You always use Tamiya White primer for every Tamiya Paint job. Tamiya paint is thin for a reason, because thick paint doesn't look good on a model, especially a 1/43rd.
and if you are painting a white metal kit, you will need to spray Tamiya metal primer on first before anything else.
But if everything is done right, there should be no problems....painting a model is a complete balancing act, lots of things have to be just right or it will not come out....

Well, I am still in a learning phase. Abandoning my airbrush for spray cans is difficult. You have so much more control with an AB but I too do not like the constant set up, clean up and tear down... I stripped everything down and started over, applying a thin cot of Krylon Satin White after the grey primer. It seems to be working well. krylon is super thin with excellent nozzles... I will however, try the Tamiya primers on the next model. Not sure that will make a ton of difference. i have used Krylon on bot plastics and metals for over 30 years. It has never failed me. I believe my biggest issue was using a dark grey under yellow. I just did an experiment with the white Krylon and it only took 4 light coats to cover. No more pooling. No detail loss. I would love to start a thread with my painting experiences, and step by step what I am learning (if anyone would be interested). But I don't know where it shoud go. I don't see a generic modelling board. Maybe someone can direct me?

BTW, who uses paint booths? I think I am going to buy one. Brands?
Please don't tell me I can build one. I know that. Not interested... I don't have time.

I guess if people would like im sure we can work up a new " Model building tips and tricks section" I know I'm always thinking of things to share but posting it in the general section will just get lost in a few days and no one will find it.

For the most part we get people doing some WIP's (work in progress) post, showing step by step of their builds....but lately not too many have done any WIP's. Ive done a lot of WIP's over the years.

For what it's worth, several guys decant the Tamiya cans, and use an airbrush. I made my paintbooth, but I'm somewhat of a woodworker, if you would rather buy one, go for it. If you look at any section of the board, you should find many WIP's, although not a lot of 1/43, mostly 1/25, and 1/18, but we would all like to see your work. Calvin used to do a lot of WIP's, but since he is now making the "big bucks" as a resin caster, he has pretty much stopped building, except for boats. Anything not specific can go in the "General" section.
Take Care Craig

Thanks Craig... I didn't know if anyone would be interested in 1/43rd builds. it is not the most popular scale to say the least! Us 1/43rd guys tend to be few and far between.
I would be happy to post pics of the builds I am doing along with notes/opinions on the paints. A buddy of mine has had my airbrush for the last 5 years! I plan on picking it up tomorrow and starting to experiment with it on a 1/24th scale plastic Mustang GT500 that I am building for my son. So we shall see how that goes!!

and if you are painting a white metal kit, you will need to spray Tamiya metal primer on first before anything else. It says on the fine white primer that it works on metal also. Just say'n.

Post your builds, we are not "scale snobs". We like all of them. For me, 1/43 is too small for my old eyes, and 1/18 is too big to display, but I like looking at all of them.

I picked up the Tamiya white primer today and all of my issues went away! Yellow over grey.... no good! After stripping the 5 pieces down 4 times, I got it right!
By the way, that Tamiya clear Pearl over the yellow??? WOW! I am stoked!

After several repaints and some really challenging decals, I thought I would just post a progress pic... A few more decals on the March 84C and It will be ready for assembly. The Eagle has all the decals applied and ready to assemble.

They are both looking real good. More of us will see your work if you post in the appropriate section. Model on!

There are sections for different eras of both Indycar, and F1 builds, as well as other subjects. Many guys just go to the sections they are most interested in.

The Penske would go in the "Indycar" 1979-1995 section. The Eagle would go in the "Indycar" 1963-1998 section (we have no "greatest-indycars-ever" section). Paint questions could go in those categories, or in the General section. Most importantly, get you stuff posted! I'm speaking for all of us when I write that we can't get enough! --Frank
