As some of you know I'm a basic general member of the Hydroplane museum, which qualifies me to use the online video vault. Which is pretty impressive. I just can not believe how extensive the TV coverage was of unlimited hydroplane racing was back in the 50's and 60's on our local television station KING-5. They would travel to a lot of the races and broadcast them for the all the fans of the northwest. The other day I was watching a one-hour PRE-RACE show for the 1957 Apple Cup at lake Chelan, Washington!!!! Thats like the NASCAR coverage of today. Tell me how many racing series back in the 50's were on TV (not film footage) with a one hr pre-race show? Until a few years ago, I never knew how important hydroplane racing was to the northwest back them! To be realistic, I think it was because there was nothing else, no football teams here, no baseball, no basketball, no major car racing.

It would be just turn into a deal where I'd be talking to myself! I just always feel guilty flooding the midwest with all my northwestern stuff! LOL!

HEY! Calvin don't be stingy with your love of "motorsports"! Motors (that is to say, engines) power some of the most exciting machines there are! I love seeing your hydros! I also love warbirds and warships. You know we all have our likes and that's what diversifies our great group. Don't cut us off from our fix! (Besides we West Coasters have that kind of class! LOL!!)

Hey Calvin. what are the little reversed scoops on the trailing edge of the boat? Thats an very good question. I do know they are called AFT hull vents. I'm guessing it has to do with aerodynamics? Dealing with inside pressure compared to the outside pressure? ?? Some boats have them up front as well.....

Yesterday was another big adventure for myself!!!!!!!!! I didn't tell very many people but at the last sec. I talked my dad into going to Lake Chelan, Washington yesterday for the Mahogany & Merlot vintage boat and car show....The main attraction is the Vintage Unlimited Hydroplane exhibition were they also give rides out to people that earned or won a chance to do so. The also had other limited classes. They had 8 Unlimiteds show up which is the most vintages unlimited I have ever heard or seen show up in one spot! 1954 My Sweetie 1955 Miss Thriftway 1956 Miss U.S. 1957 Miss Wahoo 1960 Miss Burien 1962 Miss Bardahl 1967 Miss Budweiser 1975 Oh Boy! Oberto I got to see all but the My Sweetie, Miss Burien, and Miss Bardahl run......I was really wanting to see the miss Bardahl run but, unfortunately they ran in the morning before I was there and for some reason decided that was it for the weekend. I got a lot of pictures! Most of the time they weren't really pushing it as hard as they could go as they had passengers but still being able to hear that nice BIG rumble of the V-12 Allison's and Rolls-Royce Merlins echo off the mountains was very enjoyable to my ears. It took about 3 and a half hrs to get to Lake Chelan from Spokane. It was a very interesting drive going through the mountains and deep valleys of apple orchards of central Washington. Then getting to go and take pics of the big boats on the lake and just kinda taking it easy was very enjoyable for myself......this was a BIG trip for me in the condition I'm still in but I did very well.....I think the excitement and adrenaline is they only thing that kept me going and out of trouble....I won't lie I'm completely wiped out today! Here is just a few pictures I took yesterday, I still have like 200 more pics to go through! and video! a shot of half of the pits - it was very cramped! a shot of one the smaller little automotive powered hydro's being chased down by a helicopter! The boat that ran the most was the Oh Boy! Oberto....I saw it do like 10 - three lap runs with passengers! The Miss US - all the way from the east side of the country, just to come here! 1967 Miss Bud taking off Close up of Miss Thriftway of Washington State The 1957 Miss Wahoo! The idea of the late Bill Boeing Jr back in the day......son of aviation pioneer William Edward Boeing, founder of the Boeing Company.

How much was a ride, Calvin. Looks like a once in a lifetime experience. I'm not to sure about if or how you can necessarily pay? But I do know if you put in X amount of volunteer hours at the Hydroplane museum you can get a ride. Also they did have a couple raffles to win a ride in the Miss Wahoo. All I know if a saw a lot of the passengers fist pumping and get out grinning ear to ear....a number of women got rides too!

I'm going to do a Miss Bardahl detail post....something us model builders like! I learned some facts on Saturday when I was there. The 1962-65 Miss Bardahl pictured here is the only original boat running on the water this last weekend, in other words its always been Miss Bardahl the 3rd. This last weekend was the 50th anniversary of her last race in real competition. And with the late Ron Musson driving her to 3 straight national and gold cup championships. I really looked close at the paint job and its a slight metallic Green (maybe Tamiya TS20?) with light yellow (Model masters Daytona yellow) The paint code for the real boat I learned is Yellow: DBC-83035 Green: MBC-46442A I couldn't see into the cockpit as it was too high up but I just reached over my head and snapped a pic of the cockpit which came out pretty good! The big ol'Rolls-Royce Merlin doesn't need too much of an intro... bottom end Just a little bit of info about the character I'm standing by. Back in the 50's and 60's Bardahl Oil co. of Seattle had group of cartoon characters for their advertisements....the good guy is on the tail fin "Bardahl Guy" or some people call him the secret agent guy. and the bad guys were these guys below....the Bardahl guy with his special Bardahl oil would eliminate these bad guys! LOL

My next detail post is on the 1957 Miss Wahoo. The idea of the late Bill Boeing Jr back in the day......son of aviation pioneer William Edward Boeing, founder of the Boeing Company. It was named after the town in which Bill Boeing Jr.'s wife was from. Wahoo, Nebraska. The driver was Mira Slovak which he has an interesting history about him. www.lesliefield.com/personalities/mira_slovak_the_flying_czech.htmHere is a pic of the original Miss Wahoo in 1957 in Lake Chelan, Washington, exactly where I was going to be 58 years later..... This is an exact replica of the real Miss Wahoo built in 2008. 1,710ci Allison V-12 - 2,000 HP Coast Guard Number And here is a trailer fire - they were tuning on it....I have no idea what they were doing, I didn't hear anyone say what was going on.

I might have my mood swing between forms of motorsprots but I have never stop loving any of them.
