I need to do something fun! I've been very frustrated with other things lately that I need to breath in and relax and do a fun build! Kip made me a deal on this great Lance Sellers kit and I promised I would build it very soon and thats what we are doing! This is one of the neatest cars in the history of the speedway. I plan on depicting the post Qualifying car since that was the highlight of this car. I'm going to attempt to make the shredded right front tire after the run. This is great video (I know I show this all the time but too bad watch it AGAIN!) and there is some rules for this thread - since Freddie was a superstitious person we need to uphold some of those traditions for him with this WIP!
-No color GREEN anything on this thread -NO mentioning of numbers that stay same when you flip them up side down. -You can NOT eat peanuts when reading this thread. -No women or children allowed on this thread - because as Freddie would say...."There is too much good hard work going on"I started out doing some test fitting....its only for good luck.

That is cool. I could watch videos of the track and or Indy car racing all day long. I wonder what his speed would have been if he had the smooth track they have nowadays.

Since getting this kit I've obtained a few more extra decal sheets but I'm kinda confused as some sheets have darker yellow numbers and some are lighter yellow numbers.........

The darker yellow is more accurate. Back in the 90's when I did this I used 'Kodak Film Racing Yellow' by Testors, it was one of thier nascrap colors, now out of production.

Thanks for the info. The Decals match Tamiya TS-34 Camel Yellow really good so I plan on going with that and Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red. I don't know if they had Tamiya Camel Yellow when you did this in the 90's but anyhow I would say this is the best match for today's paint.

The radiator is installed then masked off. The nose is glued on...I also drilled and installed some plastic rod inserts for extra good luck for keeping the nose on strong. I got a can of Tamiya's new line of rubber colored paint and I LOVE IT! Its looks like tire rubber! This is the third time I've used it and I'm a believer in it for sure now! (See my 1965 Lotus and 1964 Old Calhoun tires as I use it on those) I got the Tamiya white primer on.....no pin holes or any problems to speak of....primering Lance's kits are pretty uneventful really.

What do you think? Does this look warn to the cords and frayed? Its hard to know what it should look like for sure....i'm just guessing.....the only reference I have is that video above which shows the big white frayed cords flapping.

The biggest problem with this kit is the front suspension, I never designed a way to secure the lower A-arms. With the weight of the body, it does not take long for the tires to start to bow inward under the weight. I strongly recomend fashioning a way to secure or glue the A-arms into place.

Yeah I've been looking into that with the front suspension.....I'll post some pics when I figure out what needs to be done.....it shouldn't be no big deal.... BTW in the video does anyone know what that black thing is on the right side of the car?.......I was looking that going oh NO! something really ugly.....if no info comes up I'll just say screw it and keep it pretty. BTW #2 I drew up a pit board. Its close enough without spending more than 2 hrs tweaking it

LOVE the pit board idea. The prevailing wind on the tire cord was that, when a driver glanced back at the right rear and it looked like a white stripe, it was time to come straight in!!

I like the idea of the frayed cord and I hope you keep it. It tells a story and adds even more interest to the build. I think the "white stripe" looks great. I'd tone down the trailing cord a bit--but that is just me and I couldn't tell how much was trailing in the video.

I think you have the right idea, Calvin. Just tone it down some.

The tire looks great if you can get the clump to be more straight fiber. I would try to keep that look though. You are on the right track. Pit board looks great too.

Why don't you just get some fiberglass screen, paint it white and make a diameter sleeve to fit over the tire?
This car at one time sat in the lobby of Cummins Engine in Downtown Columbus Indiana. I used to have friends down there and popped in one day to check it out. I don't know what the "black thing is" but could it be the supercharger inlet? The one that got clogged?

Like Lance said there is nothing to hold down the lower A-arms. So I think the simplest way to solve that problem is just glue down some square stock and drill out holes for the arms to fit thru and then super glue them into place. and in other news the body is now Camel Yellow! (5 coats) and just for good luck I'm going to let it sit for a couple days before masking it.....

The Camel yellow is not the right color for this car , If you paint the body Tamiya Italian Red, over gray Tamiya primer, and the mask the body and spray the Yellow part of the body with Model Masters # 28104 Chrysler Yellow you well get the correct color for this car. This is what I've done on mine and it's a perfect Match to the real Car. Since both paints or Lacquer and spray the yellow in light coats you won't have a problem.

I have two different yellow decal sheets and Lance said the darker yellow decals are the ones to use...which matches the Camel Yellow. The darker yellow is more accurate. Back in the 90's when I did this I used 'Kodak Film Racing Yellow' by Testors, it was one of thier nascrap colors, now out of production. The light yellow decals match the Chrysler yellow which is what I used on my 1981 Funny car. All the pictures I've seen look more like camel yellow, but I have not seen the car in real life since I live clear over here in the trees of the northwest.

I thought there was more "orange" in the color but what you have does look very close to the decal.

The Camel yellow matches the darker decal perfectly.....the lighter yellow decal sheet is slightly lighter than the Chrysler.
Then I was told John Deere yellow was the correct color and when I looked that up there is two different John Deere yellows a light one that goes on the green tractors and a camel yellow looking one that goes on the construction type....
So yeah I'm a puzzle to say the least right now.

Seems simple to me, Calvin. Pick the decal sheet you will use, and go with whatever color matches it.

As I suggest to modelers trying to come up with the correct floro red for a McLaren is to match the decals. You're on the right track Calvin.

I agree Paul.....if the Camel Yellow is right or wrong at the end of the day if it doesn't match the decals then its going to look really funky. This sheet I have matches the Camel yellow 95% of the way I've stared at it for hours under every different light looked at it on my computer screen, and on my almost perfect 2014 smart phone screen...... I believe Walt on what the correct color is, but if my decals don't match then I just cant do it. I cant make different yellow decals to match Chrysler yellow over Italian red that's over gray primer and I know an ALPS printer cant do yellow in the way it would be needed......so I'm stuck with what I have and thats Camel yellow decals. and also...... I like Camel yellow I'm still having fun BTW!

I still haven't made my decision yet...I'm just taking in all the info and I've been thinking of some ideas.... Once again yes I believe Walt is correct on the yellow being a lighter shade......
....but I'm just going to shut up for now and do some more research.....test out some things and I tell later....

I was lucky enough to get one of Lance's kits when the Testors Kodak Yellow was still available. It matched the decals and looked right from my memory. I have several models, built years ago, that according to discussions here are not "right." I have not gone back to correct them and probably won't. I have more models to build than this life will probably allow so I just keep working away, enjoying every minute and memory they evoke. So, I agree with John: build to suit yourself. My best, Jim
