....hit a crow and now I'm eating that crow! Why? Becuase I never woulda thought this Apache airlines deal was going to be worth my time....I told Sandy I didn't want really much to do with it as I laugh at him about selling 24 sheets.....well I was WRONG! Sandy sold 24 sheets and possibly more..... So I'm eating crow now! This little car just didn't go away - I still get emails about it, I still get people wanting a Metal-cal kit for it.......OK I was wrong! its a neat little car after all! and..... and.... As I was talking on the phone with a couple of my friends this morning to laugh about how surprisingly popular this Apache car is...look at what showed up in the mail today! LOL Sandy sent me a sheet! LOL for a car I gave a bad time about and made fun of and wanted nothing to do with it.....I've had a change of heart. I like this car NOW! With all the enthusiasm for it I caught the bug now....I will build the darn thing now! This is the new Pet rock fad...it doesn't make sense but everyone wants one! Thank you Sandy that was very nice of you! Sorry I wasn't that good about it when you approached me about it as at the time I didn't even think the silly Metal-cal was going to do much.....go figure! With that said this thread will turn into the official 1964 Apache Airlines Spl. WIP If only Bill Cheesbourg was still around he prolly be happy to see one of his cars he drove getting so much attention.

I'm with you, Calvin. I thought Sandy was crazy for doing this, but yesterday I bought a decal sheet. Someday I will build the exposed engine car.

The blow-ups are great Cal. When you do the model don't forget the "OK BEAR" on the rear tire!

I decided to do the Qualifying car which had the exposed engine and the famous tank in the rear which I will choose to make yellow (Becuase its any ones guess) and the famous dent in the front nose as well! Just 10 mins of grinding and its over with! and yes Sandy I will put "OK BEAR" on the rear tire.

I read the decal instructions and it says to use Microscale over the decals before use.....I have some this, will it work? Do you just brush it on? I've never used the stuff.....

Being an Arizonan, how could I not take this opportunity to make a cool little car with an Arizona airline tie in. Besides, it was one of the last years for the front engine cars and 1964 had so many different ideas on what a good Indy car should be, even a side car thingy! I'm looking forward to building the Apache Airlines car and the 64 Watson that A.J. won with, as well as the rear engine invasion Lotus cars of Clark and Marshman. I also want to build some MT cars but it will probably be the blue one of Masten Gregory and the white one of Eddie Johnson. Not to offend the memory of Dave MacDonald, I just don't build cars people lost their lives in. Just my way of respecting their memory I guess. Thanks to Sandy and Calvin for bringing this little red roadster to us

I think I loose the fact that this is a tiny car because when test fitting a resin AMT Offy I realised I need to do a heck of a lot more grinding!

Calvin, wrong stuff. You need Microscale Liquid Decal Film. Click on John's link above and go to product number MI 12. Gary recommended some sort of coating to protect the black that is very fragile. On the other hand he expressed concern that a coating might dull the gold. I did a test on a number with Microscale's L-D-F applied with a brush. It didn't effect the look of the gold. Bottom line, if your decals look good having arrived through the mail, you may not want to do this. But if they'll be stored for some time then it's something that may help in the long term. BTW, Micro L-D-F is great for coating very old decals that may break apart with age. When you brush it on, you'll see the brush streaks, but in a short time it will smooth out like its not even there. You'll still have to trim the decals up to the image line to apply them. Lastly, to anyone who hasn't used decals with a white underlay, you'll need to apply the white 'blanks' first to get the full color of the image decals. Cal, you're off to a rippin' start! I'll be away at work 'til tomorrow, if you have any questions email me. Sandy

Well thats good to know....for some reason I thought Microscale was juts for decals...its product I have never used after all these years believe it our not....well thats why I asked. I have some decal spray that I use on my home made decals and use a lot of other decal situation (But I'll be very careful just because) Since it sounds like other products can be used.

It might be a little hard on the Gold? I've spray this for some of my clear coat jobs that have gold decals and I've noticed it almost starts playing with it. Car looks good and I like the pick of the qualifying car, it has a cool uniqueness to it. So you think that dent gave it some downforce? Jordan Maybe for less friction? The hole fills up with air which creates less surface friction? (Yeah sure!)

I dont think my Local hobby store has the decal film....thats why I have what I do have because that was the only microscale thing they had.....so for now instead of ordering it on the web and paying too much for shipping I'll just carefully try out my special decal spray I've been using for years (Which I've never had a problem with) Well besides the right rear number position (Which no one knows) I think I have the decal layout all figured out. On this open cover version it just says Arizona Apache on the left side because the Airlines logo is on the side panel which was prolly sitting in the old garage leaned up against the side of the wall at that time.

The FAQ page on the Indycals site seems to say Michael overcoats all his sheets with Microscale Liquid Decal Film, although it would make sense if he is referring to a more cost-effective similar product that he is able to get in larger quantities. I've read of many different products that modelers use to overcoat decal sheets, including a variety of spray clears such as Testors. Just be sure to test whatever alternative you use to avoid any nasty surprises.

I believe the 1964 Clymer yearbook shows the car from the right rear going through the first turn, a photo taken from the outside of the track. I'll check my issue tonite and let you know.

Looking good, how did the front dent come out? Jordan Thanks. The dent came out good......I should have took a better pic of it....Id have to put it in the light better to get the refection for you to see it in a picture but in real life I'd say it looks just like the one in the 1964 Qualifying picture. I wonder what really happen to make that dent?

I bet the dent was because Bill ran into somebody. Flaherty did the same thing to one of his Indy rides. I recall it on a #77 in maybe 1953. The cars of that era had no nerf bars on the front but some did on the back. A lot of these guys came up through midgets who used the original version of "push to pass." It's great seeing the second evolution of the Belond car. Salih was a winner. Jim

That looks fantastic! Really like the inclusion of the dent, makes it very unique! As for the decals, I have also used Krylon Krystal Klear to top coat. Does terrific, and is a little cheaper (by volume) than the Testor's.
