I have been struggling with the wheels as the 3d printed ones have a pattern and roughness to them that is proving a problem to get rid of. I think the next step is to creat my own Franken wheel from the amt wheel and the 3d wheel.

Just finished painting my third set of wheels and tossed them in the trash along with the 3d wheel patterns, I will be using the wheels that I included in the 71 McLaren. While not as accurate, they will paint up much better.

The perfectionist in you is also making you crazy!
Don't go crazy...... well, crazier! I think the wheels were super cool. I never got to see them molded, but know that you are a stickler for perfection. I like the '71 wheels that came with M16. The kits you built yourself with the Alclad finish turned out really well. My Kentucky Chrome by Krylon looks pretty good IMO.

Well, I dug the masters out of the trash and stripped the Future off and started sanding the wheels very carelly. This did not do much but putting a polishing pad on the dremel and using some colgate toothpaste for a lapping compound has seemed to help, will remold tomorrow and hope for the best.

Lance any chance you can show us what the 3d patterns look like at least. I am sure most of us would like to see what kind of quality the process can deliver.

I always prime the 3d part so I can see what is going on and use the razor blade method of scraping...I do this while sitting on the back deck with my Chesapeakes and just let time pass by because thats what you do when cleaning 3d parts, watch time pass by with a dazed look on your face.

You'll whip this one, too, Lance. I have no doubts.

The wheel on your right as you look at the screen is the old non-polished wheel, the one on the left the polished one. Does not look bad in the photo but put chrome pain on it it was UGLY! Hope to have them painted and decaled by the end of the weekend.

The parts look nice and I understand that the paint magnifies the imperfections, but I still know you will whip this one in the end.

As Floquil is no more, I decided to find a new method for painting tires, this one actually gives much better results. After cleaning the tires of mold release (dish soap & warm water), I drill a 1/16th hole in the flat spot on the bottom of the tire to mount them onto a rod. Next the tires are primed with Krylon primer, when the primer has dried, I used a mixture of testors white & black GLOSS paint mixed to a dark grey resembling Floquil's grimmy black, the color I used to use. The tire color is shot on with my airbrush and allowed to set overnight. Next the decals are applied and set with Solvaset setting solution, when these have dried I shot testors laquer dullcoat onto the tires with an airbrush. Am very pleased with the end results, hope to have the wheels done in an hour or so.

The wheels are still not coming out as I hoped, attempt 4 yesterday was floquil primer, alclad black followed by alclad chrome, very nice finish that never hardened up. Today, alclad black followed by alclad chrome, everything harderned up but the finish is a bit rougher than it could be. will try another set with Krylon primer first then alclad black and chrome.

Lance have you considered shooting them with something like Mr. Surfacer? I use it in my aircraft builds to hide small surface imperfections.
(Personally, I don't think they look that bad)

Your assistant looks like my assistant. Hopefully you don't find dog hairs stuck in fresh paint like I do.

A few more parts to glue on, then will remold some parts and try to correct a few fit issues.

Need to fix some issues with the engine cover and try to get the car to set more even. I hope to have the engine cover and tail remolded in about a week, will then build another for the instructions (non painted) and iron out a few rough spots to make the assembly a bit smoother.

I can't believe you do stuff like this from scratch. Good looking car and dog, impressive how much work you do and redo just to get the end results to such a high standard.
