OK. My first WIP. This will be the Racing Associates #3 that Jim Hurtubise had his first champ car win with at Sacremento in 1959. Am using the Etzel dirt car with minor mods and some detail added. Per the instructions, I started with the Offy. Added wire and a black wash.

The Offy is in the belly pan. Added the tranny, steering gear, gas pedal, brake pedal, and drive shaft. Lots of pink.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I put the oil tank in the belly pan and am working on the cockpit upholstery, upholstery snaps, and instrument panel. Am putting aluminum rims around the dials on the panel. Will have more pictures soon.
James, I know what you mean. I had this kit since Chris brought it out and was reluctant to build it until I got another one last year. I want to build the Schmidt that Herk also won in, but probably won't do that until I get another one. I think this last sentence certifies me as crazy.

Kip,
The Offy is looking great and seeing the Pink RA #3 moving along is great. I followed both the Lesovsky lay down and the upright car because I was a real Johnny Thompson fan back then. But by the Summer of '59, I was also a Herk fan. I believe that it was in the Schmidt car (without the head rest fairing) that Thompson to

And picking up where I did not intend to stop above: took his bad tumble down the front "straight" at Langhorne in '55. It is also a color/marking scheme I'd love to do or seen done. If you can be patient, American Racing Miniatures should have Chris' Kuzma back on the market by the end of this year or very early next year. Keep posting pix. It's coming along great. Ed

Ditto to your post Snyder. I am torn on these cars because I was also a BIG Thompson fan. I was at Williams Grove in 59 when he got hurt. And then along came Herk. I did Thompson's 1959 Lesovsky pole winner from a Union Vac body 20 odd years ago. Bought Gary's resin version a while back and plan on doing that before too long.

Didn't get much done today. A little work on the cockpit (did the buttons/snaps on the upholstery) and did some work on the instrument panel. I drilled out the gauges and used aluminum tubing slices for the gauge rims. Used Model Car Garage gauge faces glued to the back of the panel with a strip of thin white plastic behind the gauge faces (the gauge faces have a clear background). Need to finish the panel's surface. kip

...until I get another one. I think this last sentence certifies me as crazy. kip Not crazy, just can't decide on which one of multiple versions! I managed to accumulate 5 of the Etzel Kuzmas over the years (only one while Chris was in business!), and now that A.R.M. is going to bring them back, I'll get enough to do ALL the verisons! The Herk R.A version is the one I've got started, too, just haven't had much time to put towards it lately. Yours looks great so far, have you decided how to do the tubular shocks on the front yet? Now you've gone and focused my attention on the front end. Just kidding, I need to look at the front end before going further with the project. My pictures of the front end are hazy at best. That's the problem with action photos from a dirt track race. I have one photo of the car not in motion. I can't tell exactly where the shocks attach or what sort of opening there is in the body. Looks like maybe the top is a double sided frame attachment (cross section looks like an "H" with a bolt in between that the top of the shock encircles--like the Kurtis roadsters of that era).

Finally some progress. Decals are on. Indycal's DZUS fasteners applied. Used Indycal's 1/12 scale rivets for the upholstery snaps. No intake side engine cover as my references show it usually ran without. Also, you may notice the nose is missing. Minor disaster and back to the paint shop. Front axle is in. OK, this is why there was a lapse in updates. The kit comes with some beautiful intake stacks. Unfortunately, they represent stacks made out of rubber hose. Reference photos show that the #3 when Hurtubise was driving ran with intake stacks mostly of rubber hose but with metal bell end pieces. Tried 3 different ways of doing the hose clamps. Finally used the thinnest silver Pactra Trim Tape. The tape was not sticky enough to stay so I had to run a very thin layer of super glue gel along the inside of the tape. I'm pretty happy with the results but it was a trial and at times frustrating.

I can't imagine the frustration those hose clamps caused, but they look great, as does everything else.

Starting to look like something. Rear suspension is mostly in. Still have the torsion bar connectors and the tube shocks to put in. Lots of fiddly dodads in this rear suspension. Seems like the 1950's roadsters were a bit simpler. Put in some brake lines. I love the separate piece brake calipers. They look so much better than the one piece disc and caliper. Had to make my own shock levers as the kit's were too short in two directions. Can't figure what went wrong. I double checked and all other suspension parts were installed as in the directions and look the same as the instruction pictures. Belly pan has been mated to cockpit/fuel tank. Steering wheel and fuel cap are in also. Once I finish the rear suspension, I guess I will start on the roll bar. The kit doesn't have a roll bar so it'll be time to get out the aluminum tubing. From the photos it looks like a three piece affair.

I gotta agree, this has been--so far--a really enjoyable build. The resin is fantastic and once I mated the cockpit/fuel tank to the belly pan, the model just felt good. Sounds weird but its got a nice weight to size feel. Kinda feels like a tough, substantial car that could take on a dirt race of 100 miles. In scale, of course.

Kip,
I hope I am not too late with this as it looks like you are nearly finished. However, I have a close in head on shot of Herc at Sacramento in the #3. It really show a lot of front end detail. It is on page 46 of Joe Scalzo's The American Dirt Track Racer. If you don't have it, I can scan it and e-mail it to you. The model is a a beauty, by the way. Ed

Have not started the front end yet. (Been working on the roll bar and rear tube shocks today.) I have been putting off working on the front end because I haven't figured out the tube shocks yet. I don't have that book and would greatly appreciate a scan. Thanks in advance for the scan and thank you all for the kind words.

Two shots coming in the AM (I am electronically challenged and must rely on good wife to take of this). One good black and white of Herc at Sacramento and a second in color of the DA Lube car which I believe is one and the same car. Great detail of front suspension and steering gear. Ed
