Not much going on here lately. Sooo, (Fanfare please) its time for an update. Put the roll bar on. Bent aluminum tubing. And the nose is on (after the repaint) with that sweet grill. It would be a shame to hide that grill but it is dirt track racing. Many thanks to "spyder" for providing a photo of the front end. Hopefully I am done bending tubing.

That looks great! Your rock screen just needs some dirt clods to look 100% real! Any chance you might be able to share Spyder's pics of the front end? Or maybe a pic of your model showing the rear side of the front suspension? I really need to get back to my build of this one, got bogged down on engine detail!

Photo(s) are from Joe Scalzo's American Dirt Track Racers. Pg.46 is Hurt on the rail at Sacramento in black and white. There is a second shot of the car in DA Lubricants livery in color. I think that might be on p.106.

Maybe this will help. (Sacramento) or this The second picture adds to my confusion as the tube shocks are in front of the axle. In the first photo the shocks are clearly behind the axle. I did mine with the shocks behind the axle. It hides a multitude of sins and I liked the car with the large centered number on the nose. Also, I did not have a small number 3.

I don't know. I don't even remember where I got it. Must be the effects of old age. Anyway. Herk only drove the car 4 times. Sacramento, Trenton, Phoenix, and the Hoosier Hundred. Its obviously not Sacramento. The fence does not match period photos from the Hoosier Hundred. Can't find any photos of Phoenix when it was dirt. Based on the fence, some photos of Trenton might fit, but others appear all wrong. Anybody recognize the fence?

Trenton as paved and had, in '59, a lower wood wall that was painted white. It must be Phoenix. And as everyone has noted, your Kuzma is an inspiration to all of us. Are you going to NNL East next Saturday.

Will not be able to make it to NNL East. Had it been on its normal 3rd Saturday in April, I would have been there. Phoenix sounds about right by process of elimination. There was just too much wrong with Trenton and the one photo that looked possible was not very clear. I never got to Trenton (or for that matter Langhorne) until they were paved. One of my racing regrets.

Thanks for posting the pics, they are a great help! Can't see the tubular shocks on the rear in the Sacramento pic, but I think they are there. Also looks like two different rock screens, the Sacramento one has a flat bottom, the other is more oval in shape.

The rock screens are different. I am doing the Sacramento car as much as possible--with the flat bottom rock screen and the tube shocks behind the front axle--since it was Herk's first champ win. I don't have any photos of the rear end. However, in the book "The Fabulous Fifties" by Dick Wallen there is a painting of the 3 car. There are clearly rear tubular shocks mounted in front of the rear axle. Can't vouch for the accuracy of the painting. If you want I can have my wife scan the painting (she knows how to do these things) and post it.

Thanks, Kip, but no need to scan the painting, the pics here and your model have answered my questions!

I officially set my all time record today. For the 56th time on this build, I was crawling around on all fours, combing the rug looking for a part that I dropped. Just call me super klutz.

Hell Kip, I have done more than that on my Miller build, What is worse is when you have the part in tweezers and it just shoots out. I have a smooth concrete floor under my bench, and still have trouble. With carpet I could never find some of those parts.

The tweezers are my worst enemy. Just dropping parts at least gives a general location, But tweezers are a propellant and the parts go anywhere. A concrete floor might be worse--a bigger bounce. By the way, I am now up to 58. Counting the drops is pretty anal but maybe being anal is a good attribute for modeling.

Great progress on this build. I love the pink color. I think any body that models has dropped a part or two. I know I have dropped and spilled paint, decal set and thinner before. Thankfully the paint was no were near anything to ruin. Keep up the good work.

Why is the photo appearing in the box above your reply, but not in my original post. I tried duplicating the sequence you provided, but just the Xbox appears. I used to just put the photo on the Folki clipboard and paste it in the photo box when I posted. Should the sequence you provided be put in the photo box or in the BBcode.

I have no idea why your original way is not working for you anymore. My guess is this forum has the tendency to not like really long codes and certain comas and other things in the codes or URLs Depending on your browser you can right click your picture and "Copy URL" then you can put it in between the IMG brackets. Usually the copied URL is nice and short - and usually works.

Thank you for all the help. I think I got it working now. I don't know why its so hard for me. Anyway. I wanted to put a tad of camber on the front end, so I put a slice of thin plastic under the top end of the wheel when I drilled out the axle hole. I originally painted the wheels Model Master Magnesium but I wanted to give it the gold tint of some magnesium wheels. So I gave it a light coat of Tamiya Champagne. Tire decals are by Indycals. Rears are 1/24-1/25 scale. Fronts are 1/32 scale. This is what I was trying for in getting the details of the car as driven by Herk. Wheels are on and we'll call it finished. Yahoo, it sat level on all four wheels. Changes to the kit include: late 1950s Halibrand dirt wheels/tires (from American Racing Miniatures[very nice]), rock screen and frame, roll bar, wired engine, tube shocks on front end, clear windshield, bent tailpipe, metal/rubber hose intake stacks, hood straps, and brake lines. The kit includes a heavy metal framed windshield that is accurate for the Dean Van Lines cars. However, the Racing Associates #3 and a few of the other kit variations had clear windshields. The kit does not include a template. I made a template that could be used for the DA Lubricants and Schmidt cars and anyone building any of these cars is welcome to a copy if you think it would work for you. I don't know what the Sutten windshield looked like. I think I had more fun with this build than any prior builds. Only negative, over 80 times crawling on all fours looking for small pieces that went flying. Six times for the knockoffs alone. Thanks again for the photo help. I need for my wife to learn how to post photos. She's good with stuff like that. I'm not. kip
