I got this 1/24 Marui M23 today in the mail. raceparke sent this free, and he wanted me to do something good with it. Very nice of him. Thank you so much Dan! Its actually a nice Glue Bomb really. After thinking about it all day, I'm going to turn it into David Hobbs' Yardley Mclaren! I like David and here is my chance to build one of his cars. Feel free to share your favorite David Hobbs quotes on this thread!

Other than the bulked-up engine and trans to accomodate the electric motor, it's a really decent kit. I hope to find another someday, maybe not for free, tho, sheesh! Looking forward to your progress on this one.

I know its not a red car but, Patrick aren't you proud of me working on a 1/24 scale F1 car? I'm going to be depicting the 1974 Austrian GP car. David drove this race and at Monza which had the other air box, so I really dont have a choice besides Austria. After Michael P. gets back from his Indy memorabilia show extravaganza I'm going to order his 1/24 1974 Yardley Decals! www.indycals.net/decals/f1/74yardleymclaren.htmland his 70's 1/24 F1 Tyre decals! www.indycals.net/decals/tires/f1tires70s.html

Calvin, Yes, Grasshopper, I am proud of you for two things. First, you picked David Hobbs, a good guy and great driver. Secondly, you chose the Yardley livery. Oh. ok and a 1/24 real scale car. The engine can be saved as the transaxle, but it involves a bit of cutting and slicing. That might be a bit too hard for you in this large scale (snicker, chortle). alot of work (unless you're cheap like me!)! Best to swipe a Cosworth from a Heller kit! Have fun and I know it will look..."crackin!" Besides not many people know the difference between 1/24 and, say, 1/25! Patrick

Thanks Patrick for the input! I'm really not to sure how much cutting I'll do on the engine but I'll think about it. I think cutting on this engine too much might turn into a game of Jenga.

Ah yes, another project of mine that is stalled by my lack of focus. I’ve had the Mclaren kit for years and last year I got a great deal on a Heller Brabham so I had a proper engine. I really need to part that kit out so I’ve got all the engine parts I need for the Mac and get the rest of the kit into the mail as promised, don’t I Patrick. Calvin, Michael’s Yardley decals are designed for the 1/12th scale Tamiya McLarens so make sure to ask for a little extra “Y” decal as you won’t necessarily get a perfect fit around the front suspension upper A arm openings. Have fun! Paul Erlendson

I sanded all the paint off. I've also come to the realization that the rubber tires are too far gone to use - they are dried out and are starting to crumble. So I'm going have to make a mold and cast them out of resin, and I'm sure I'll have some for sale on my website as well.....just to make it even more worth while for yours truly!

"tires dried out and are starting to crumble." You certainly don't want a lot of "glag" buildup around your model! If your tires are too far gone for masters my set is in good shape and I can loan you a front and rear if you need. I might be interested in a set myself as I was afraid to sand off the logos on the sidewalls so I could then appy the proper decals. Paul Erlendson

AH, thank you, thank you, thank you Calvin! Mid-70's cars are great to model, but tires have been a problem!

I have to fill the insides up with clay to be able to make a mold so you'll have to cut off or grind those kit wheels down. (The part of the wheel that fits up inside the tire)

Somewhere else I saw pics of someone using Lego bricks instead of modelling clay to build their mold boxes.

Sorry to disappoint you but no it has nothing to do with the back end of this Mclaren. Its just 1984 March parts is all!

Somewhere else I saw pics of someone using Lego bricks instead of modelling clay to build their mold boxes. I used to do that when I first started mold making, but clay is faster and doesn't leak like legos do.

Also, speaking of the engine again, I looked at the AMT PC-6 engine, and it looks too small for this Mclaren. Sorry to disappoint again but I think I might be going with the kit engine as I don't have anything else that would work, my parts inventory for 1/24 F1 kits is a big huge ZERO. I know its big on the bottom and kinda bulky in the rear but........It doesn't bother me too much as the air box covers over the top, and you really don't see the bottom.

You could always say the engine "done blowed up" (my personal favorite Hobbsism)

I used to do that when I first started mold making, but clay is faster and doesn't leak like legos do. James May built an entire house out of Legos, and one of the issues was the leaking sink/toilet etc (yes, they too, were made of Lego's).

The show was pretty funny. The toilet did work (despite the leaks) and they demonstrated with a Lego turd in the bowl.

It really is stunning how nice the car looks in fresh paint! Nice work, Calvin. Does seem a bit off for you to be assembling the engine after paint, how unCalvin of you LOL JK
Interesting the thought about them trying to keep the team color on the car. Not a lot of teams push keep their color on the car long-term. I thought of the blue of Petty's NASCAR team and the red Ferrari F1 (though different shades) as example but it certainly isn't the norm these days for a company to keep *their* color on the car through the years regardless of sponsor.
