I recently said in an email that I wasn't going to do this, but I had a change of heart. This is the Ebbro Lotus 49, 1967 kit and I will be building it in it's red whit and gold livery from 1968. I will actually be building this as TWO cars: Graham Hill's 1968 Spanish GP winner - the first F1 win for this livery and the first Lotus win after Jim Clarks death, and I will also be building it as Jim Clarks Lotus 49T that he raced in the Tasman series and where he scored his last win of any kind. It is my understanding that the only difference between the 49 and 49T was the engine displacement of the Cosworth, which was reduced for the Tasman series. The series had 8 races and Clark won four of them and the championship. Basically what I will do is build the car and decal it with white roundels, leaving off the numbers and any other contingency markings that might change location from one car to the other. I will then clearcoat it. After it's finished I will apply one set of numbers and contingencies, photograph it, then remove those decals and rebrand it with the other car, which will be the final version (I haven't decided if I'm going to keep Clark or Hill as my final version).

Awesome!! My two cents is keep it Clark since you'll already have a Hill car built.

I don't know if the kit's green plastic will have the same color-bleed issues as Tamiya red plastic does, but I'm not taking chances - so it's TS30 silver to block any bleed through, to be followed by white primer, then TS26 white, TS8 Italian Red and TS21 Gold. Note the two similar rectangular pieces - one will be for Clark's car, one for Hill's - this goes on top of the tub in front of the instrument panel.

I'm not going to ask how you do such great work so quickly, or how you take such great photos, or how the heck do you figure out the whole decal thing. How do you keep your hobby mat so clean? Mine looks like the bottom of a birdcage. You buy new ones every time, don't you. Yea, I bet that's it.

I gave my kit a quick once over today and the attention to detail is impressive. I'm hoping you (Michael) show some of the detail painting you do as the color call-outs in the instructions are a little vague. At least to me. The tires are unreal as are the variation of parts from race to race. This is a very special kit. Thanks Michael for the great service and the WIP

Just to second John, the service was great (thanks Michael!), the kit is a beauty and the tires are just plain awesome. Looking forward to the next WIP installment (and yes, some painting details).

Sandy, are you going green or red on your build? I'm going green as I'm a Jimmy Clark fan. I'm hoping I can pull off painting the yellow stripe. I just don't see how the decal can conform to all the bends and recesses on the cowl. Should be a tester for me.

With Clark's car it just looks right. I share you concerns about the decal, painting will be a challenge, but should look best. A friend did a beautiful job painting the yellow stripe on Clark's '65 Indy winner... in 1/43! I'm going to check with him for some tips and will pass them on. Sandy

Thanks Sandy. It's almost impossible for me to think of a Lotus in any other livery than green and yellow. Although the 78 and 79 are rather iconic in their own right. I'm looking forward to any tips you might have.

I'm with you, too Sandy. Jimmy wasn't my favorite driver (he kept on beating my favorite cars ALL the time.) Now, looking back I know he was one of the very few "Great" drivers in a group of great drivers in F1. Michael, I haven't finished my Heller 49 conversion because I need a yellow stripe. Do you make one in 1/24?

Hi John and guys! I asked my friend Chazz about how he painted his Lotus stripe and here's his reply-
"...forget the decals, you are going to have to paint it. Use the Tamiya Lemon yellow it is a perfect match. You will need the following... a can of 3M spray adhesive glue, found in any Micahels, Ben Franklins and etc., Tamiya wide tape I think it comes in 3/4 or an 1", A sheet of wax paper and a copying machine. I will walk you through the Chuck K. way of masking. My father taught me this when I was a youngster. You need to be patient but I figure you already have that after raising two girls.
Here we go.... 1.) Paint the car, especially the top and the nose the yellow that I mention. Make sure you have many good coats of yellow down for it could come into play later.
2.) Photo copy the decal. This is your template
3.) Take a piece of wax paper and place a piece of the wide Tamiya tape down on top of it. Take another piece of tape and place it perpendicular to the first with equal distance on either side of center. Take another piece of tape and butt that right up against the second piece that you laid down.
4.) Take the photocopy decal sheet of paper and spray the back of it with the spray adhesive glue. Let this dry, gas off for at least 5-10 minutes, at which time it will still be tacky.
5.) Take a scissor and do a gross trimming along the edge of the photocopy paper of the yellow decal image, leaving about a 1/16 of and inch away from the actual margin of the imaged photocopied decal.
6.) Now take the photocopied decal paper that you have cut out and line it up on top of tape that is already down on the wax paper and press it onto the tape.
7.) Now take a brand new 11 blade and a steel rule and line the steel rule up against the edge of the photocopied decal and cut the straight edge just shy of the curve on either side of the image. Now take your straight edge again and line it up on the perpendicular straight edge of the photo decal margin that is running perpendicular and again just shy of the curves running toward the middle and the curve running laterally down what will be the sides of the nose. Not DO NOT attempt to cut the curve portions with the 11 blade.
8.) Now take a very fine, sharp, small curved scissor and connect the straight margins with the fine scissor following the photocopied edge.
9.) Now all the other paper work will fall away and your will have the following design of the yellow decal that is in the kit. And these are the layers, First the photocopy that has glue on the back of it, This is laying on top of the Tamiya tape which in turn is laying on top of the wax paper.
10.) Now gentle peel back and remove the photocopied image of the decal and STOP! And look and listen this next part is critical.
11.) Take a sharp tipped drafting pencil and a steel rule and mark a center line at the beginning, cockpit end, of the tamiya tape and at the far end, nose, of the tape. You need these markers to line the tape on the center of the body. Now, every where there are two or more piece of tape butting up against each other you need to take a pencil and a steel rule and scribe 2--4 mm long parallel lines bisecting across the tape margins.. These lines are critical for you will line the piece of tape up against each other so everything is aligned using these hash marks.
12.) Sandy, one of your bisecting cut lines of the tape may have to go thru the curve of the tape on either side of center. Before you make that cut make sure you have the hash marks in place. Why? Because at the nose of the Lotus you are taping across three different planes and the tape will pucker. Remember the body curves away the more one moves from the centerline to the lateral walls of the body edges. But the nose also falls away and down, hence causing even more puckering of the tape. If you bisect the tape right thru the curve of the pattern with the hash marks in place then you can work the puckers out as the coarse across the multiple planes of that nose.
13.) Do not fret, you will have to make 2 or three stabs at this, be patient, This is going to be a whole lot easier in 1/20 scale vs 1/43, trust me. The effect will be well worth it and decals will never ever capture this effect. Sandy, 30 years ago I built two of Hasegawas' 1/32 P-26 with the elaborate pin striping of the cowl and fuselage and used the same technique.
14.) Make sure you burnish the edges of the tape with a round blunt object. Never spray into the edge of the tape. Sandy, if you do get bleeding under the tape do not fret all is not lost. Let the green dry a good 24 hours, take a q-tip and tooth paste and rub out the seeping green, remember you have a lot of yellow base coats to protect you.. Re-mask the edge with tamiya tape and shoot just the edge ever so lightly.
15. PLease feel free to share this on your message board for we are all in this together and if it helps someone build a better model my late father would be happy indeed. It works just be patient one and all."
Thanks to Chazz, a great friend and modeler.
Cheers, Sandy

Yep. I always recommend painting the yellow stripe - it will simply look better. My least favorite decals that I make are the my Lotus 29 Clark decals because I have to include the yellow stripe because the numbers are part of it, but it really needs to be painted. Unfortunately my yellow decals don't match any paint, so I can't just supply the numbers, or else they won't match.

When someone finally paints their car take some photos of the process. I'm a visual learner and I need to see this process played out.
