;)Well, I'm going to start on my Indy Ferrari that never raced. I've cornered a 288 GTO turbo engine, a Monogram Lola Indy, and a Gunze Ferrari F1-87 to scratch bash together. My thanks to Michael( or was that Lance?) that had such great photos way back and I prudently saved them for future use. A WIP will ensue subsequently. Any suggestions for sponsorship decals are welcome as I will make a race prepared-style never-was . Patrick

Patrick,
I always thought about doing the same thing but know I never will at this point. I will watch this closely. I am sure you will do a great job on it!

Here's picture of what I've got so far. I started with a (glue bomb) 1/25 AMT March 88C. Lots of body putty to get to this point. I went out a bought the 1/64 Provence Moulage kit just to get the dimensions right. I'm planning on making the car into a speedway version (speedway wings instead of the road coarse wings on the test car). I suspect that the car was nothing but a threat by Ferrari in 1987 to pull out of F1. One thing that indicates that the car wasn't really serious was the placement of the turbo exhaust. It is under the rear bodywork with no sign of heat shields. The body would have been in flames after about 2 laps in this configuration. BUT... Its a Ferrari and an Indy Ferrari at that ... I couldn't resist. It'll be really nice to have someone else working on a copy of this car. Rusty

Thanks guys. I like the Momo decaled car as that's about when 333 SPs raced. As for the NART car, I'd see it as a big racing stripe...white, blue, white, then lots of bogus sponsorship. Uh, wait... the Momo car IS red! Hm-m-m-m-m That's nice. Wip to follow... Patrick Just started making some cuts and sloping some glue. I made some heavy duty cuts on the Ferrari body and wish I didn't as I only needed the nose piece... next focus will be the pod vents. I am interested in the Turbo system if the Ferrari. Are there intercoolers like the F1 cars? Color photos of the engine are requested. Patrick

The nose isn't still quite right, perhaps it isn't flat enough and not enough "bend", but close... I'm having some difficulties with the engine cover fitting over the engine. Perhaps it is too high so I'll cut out a sump hole in the bottom of the chassis pan... It fits fine with the Lola cover on... Patrick

Good Start Patrick, the sides of the nose appear flatter to me... if there was going to be a sponsor on this car I have no doubt in my mind.......MOMO!!!! Sorry I got all excited but this car is Screaming at me!!! Chris Ps, check my fotki on the turbo placement and No intercoolers allowed at Indy!!

Gincarlo Moretti would have jumped at a chance to sponsor this car. Not just the sides of the nose need to be flatter, but also the top of the nose needs to be flatter too. The picture seems to show a slite " swoop "to the top of the nose section just before the windsheild as well.

Yes, thanks guys for the needed imput. I can see that highlight line in the photo of the 1/43 model sheet. Momo decals...hmmmm. Who makes some then! I like the "Penthouse" on the wing. It was a tech magazine of some type wasn't it? Patrick

Hello Chris and all members of Open Wheel Racing Modeling. I'm a new member and i ran across your thread on the Ferrari 637 Indy car. I've also wanted to model this car in 1/24 scale for quite some time. I laid this out a long time ago and i collected some of the parts and kits. The nose and cock pit area are from the PROTAR F156/85. This should bring you along way forward with less cutting and puttying and the sides of the nose are flat. Look for pictures on the net for the F156/85 and you will see the closer similarity. I have the 1/43 kit as well. Good luck with this build!

maybe its just me, but the cockpit on the 1:1 car seems to be more 'forward' than on the model. when I looked at the pics of the F156/85, it is much more forward than the Indy cars. did the Ferrari really need THAT much room behind the driver for the powertrain and fuel cell?

While I'm waiting for the weather to get warmer, I thought I'd crack this puppy out again. The nose is a bit better and the engine cover is now modified... I'm slowly trying to get the Momo Ferrari on the grid. Also, I know development of a car necessitates that the early design doesn't always match the race version. Therefore, I expect the Ferrari engineers would make some modifications as the car was tested (secretly, of course!). Patrick

Well, I worked on the engine today and came up with a setup part Ferrari, part Indycar. I think this a happy medium for the fully unsorted car... I also cut down the cockpit surround a bit... The engine cover is a bit troublesome, but we'll see when I cut out the mid-brace plastic sheeting. Photo of that next. Could someone suggest where the intercoolers might be hooked up? I don't know turbo charged cars so well. Photo directions of a drawing would help. Patrick

If serious about MOMO liveries, then try Pattos Place Decals. Just punch that into the search engine to get his link. I found two MOMO sheets listed under Ferrari 333SP sheets. Maybe you can adapt these? He sells in all type of scales. here's both sheets; Attachments:

Are you going to have a pop valve and/or plenum?

Jordan, Wha? ? I am ignorant of either application and their need. I'm not sure which direction I should go. Suggestions welcomed. Calvin, This model is a piece of dookie. How'd you know? LOL Patrick You can see plenums in the photos, they are the pieces above the valve covers on these engines from the 80s and 90s. The turbo in the rear feeds the plenum camber on top of the engine and that turbo-charged compressed air goes down into the engine to make power. The pop-off valve is the piece sitting up on top of the plenum and it regulates the maximum pressure in the plenum. When there is too much pressure it opens (making a pop noise) and those are supplied by the sanctioning body to keep power and therefore speeds down. Your donor kit should have one you can use or modify if you want. Just trying to help with ideas. You get the cool freedom to make up what goes under the engine cover up. Jordan
