Hi, What color was the frame rails that ran along the right side on the driver's seat on the '67 STP Turbine? I've started working on Bill Jorgenson's kit and would like to add some extra detail to the cockpit. Also, does anyone have a few good shots of the cockpit, especially the instrument panel and the area just in front of it? Thanks, Sandy

Here is a shot to get this started! More to come... From the book "Turbine Grand Prix" by Jabby Crombac I believe this is post race, the mirrors have the elevated mounting that I have not seen on any practice photos yet, and there is rubber debris on the right side of the "fuselage". Also, it looks like some sort of a tow rope wadded up and thrown in the floorboard. BTW, I believe the interior door bars were black... Bill H

A couple more...trying to find color pics! I believe it noteworthy that on raceday the car carried a few decals that are not included on the kit or aftermarket sheets. Details will be forthcomimg if questioned. This info is probably only for my fellow super-accuracy nuts...

Super photos, keep 'em coming! The frame bars do appear black like you said. Plus, news to me, there's some kind of small vertical tank behind the driver's right shoulder. So, the last photo is from the race? As you mentioned also, there's are a bunch more decals than I'd seen before. On Bill's kit (a very, very nice kit; the shape, casting , and parts are all excellent), the front part of the cockpit- about from where the driver's knees would be and forward- is solid. No doubt this has to do with the demands of casting a large one piece body like this. So I've ground this out using my trusty Dremel tool, plus thinned the cockpit side walls some. Next I'll use some Plastruct rod to build the bars unless someone has a better idea. Thanks much, Sandy

Thanks much and keep them coming. You're nailing the info I need. OK guys, here's a question that may show who of us has been around a long time and who's a part of Gen-X. Look at the second photo from the top. Standing behind the uplifted speed brake, who's that big hunky guy with his head cut out of the picture? I'm betting its Dan Blocker. The guy that played 'Hoss' Cartwright on the great cowboy TV show "Bonanza". Check the vest, open shirt, thats what he wore on the show and at PR appearances. Plus, he was a big racing fan and owned his own USRRC (fore runner to the Can Am series) team . His car was a Chevy (I think) powered rear engined Genie named the Vinagaroon. Sandy

Hi Mongo, I didn't know Dan played college football. I believe he died in the early seventies from a heart attack. I just found a photo in Vintage Motorsport (Sept/Oct '06) that shows him wearing this same garb. In the photo he's with the two owners of Nickey (backwards "K") Chevrolet who sponsored his Genie. I'm really enjoying building this one. You can't make up a more fantastic story than the one for the Paxton Turbine. Radical car, flamboyant owner, all time great driver, runs away from the field in the most important race in the world, only to be stopped short with victory in sight by a nickel & dime part. And then repeat the story the NEXT year with the all new design '68 Turbine 'Wedge'. Sandy

It appears there is a decal just below the Bear decal but it's indecipherable in these photos. I've added the Purolator and 18th Eng Brig decals to my sheet, and made a couple other corrections. If someone can supply a decipherable photo of the Firestone Race Safe Tanks and the mystery decal I noted above, I will add them to my sheet. Also can someone confirm the color on the Purolator decal - some images it looks yellow and blue, others white and blue, others white and black. I went with Yellow and blue for now...

Michael, Thanks for your concern! Below is a pic of Mario's 1967 ride with the Firestone Racesafe decal pictured fairly clearly. I have to wonder if it was included on Lance Seller's(I think) now discontinued Brawner Hawk kit sheet! I think this was red/white on the mylar/chrome background... I believe the Purolator decal was white/blue also on a mylar(chrome) background. With the checkered flag in the corner of course. I will search for a pic of the mystery decal below the "Bear" decal and post it then... Thanks again! Bill H

Michael, I see the mystery decal a bit clearer now, but still cannot make it out...Possibly someone here will recognize it from this pic!

Hi guys!!!
Let me throw my two cents in on this one......It could be the Speedways Own sticker they put on cars after they passed inspection to race. It was orange and black in 1967. I know that one set, they came in pairs was on top of the turbine on the left side of the cockpit/ I'll call and ask Bob Clindist tomorrow, he'll know.
Best to you
Russ

Yes, the one pair of tech stickers was on top of the turbine left of the cockpit. The other pair of tech stickers was just to the right of the roll bar behind the STP logo. You can see them - although not decipherable - in the pic I referenced.
I'll change the Purolator to white but I'll probably omit the chrome/mylar.

Here is a good shot of the tech sticker placement...Notice also the STP emblem on the seat back... Also, it is interesting to note that this is PRE-race as the mirrors were raised for raceday. Bill H

A couple more questions... Michael, A big THANK YOU for your unselfish interest in perfecting the decal sheet! That said, I believe this Magnaflux decal is missing as well. It is on the turbine below the Wagner and Premier and to the left of the Sun... That photo is from the '67 Mario ride... Now I ask: Does anybody think this Proto could be the still mysterious decal below the Bear Alignment? That pic is from the '67 Lloyd Ruby car...

This photo was taken during Calibration Day a few days the race, with Mario behind Jones. Parnelli told me a great story about "Silent Sam" and the days before the race. Mario Andretti was whining about the "Heat fumes" the turbine car was putting out and it was distorting his view ahead of the car and when the flap when up like a "dive brake", it scared him. He went to USAC and complained about it and was told, "Keep ahead of Parnelli and you won't have a problem." After that, the STP Crew took white tape and put a saying on the underside of the flap. That day during practice, Parnelli got in front of Mario going into turn three....and when the flap went up, "Arrivederci Mario" was on the underside of the flap as it went up. A member of the STP Crew wanted to "F*** YOU MARIO", but Granatelli said no. On race day, the first race day...Parnelli started on the outside of row two and went to the outside of everyone into turn one. "I knew that you could do that because I saw my friend Jim Hurtubise do it in 1961 and 63, so with the four wheel drive, I thought, "What the hell, I'll do that too." And he did and past everyone but Mario, who went high into turn two, so Parnelli dove down under Mario and blew by him coming out of turn two down the back straight to take the lead. On my office wall, I have a beautiful art printdone by Jim Swintal called, "Lighting the Candle" depicting that moment....When Parnelli signed it to me, he said, "This isn't accurate, you know." I looked at it very carefully and ask why isn't it? Parnelli said, "When I went by Mario, he flipped me off and I told the artist he should put that there, but he didn't." All Mario said was, "He was on me so fast and went by so quickly, he didn't have the decency to wave so I showed him what place he was in."

Hi, You guys have supplied a ton of great info, THANKS! I've been at the IPMS National Model show and then a week long family vacation so the Turbine project has been on hold. Looking at the cockpit photo above I have a good idea for replicating the rivets on the backbone frame. Check Archer's Fine Transfers- www.archertransfers.com/ They make mostly dry transfers for military models, but they've recently released a series of water slide decals (the 'regular' type of decals, not dry transfers) with scale rivets, bolts, access panels (really cool), etc, printed on the decal film in resin. That gives you a 3-dimensional effect when applied. I used the 'stitching' sheet on a WW I plane I built for the Nationals and the effect was great. Sandy PS- I've heard from informed sources that Russ Bundy is really Boris Badinov, the former nemesis of Rocky the Flying Squirrel. ;D Sorry Russ, I couldn't stop myself!

Great link to that dry transfer rivet source! Thanks!!
Now, calling RUSS!!!!!
Do you happen to have a closeup of that rt. side panel showing the mystery decal below the "Bear Alignment"? I can see it lurking in the bird's eye view shot just below the word BEAR...
