Production started today on the 57' & 58' Belond Special. Pleased with the body and wheel castings. The wheels are Etzel's style with the outer wear indicator grooves in the tires. Molds for seat and other miscellaneous parts are setting up. Metal is on it's way. I'm eventually going to do several variants of the Epperly Laydowns: Demler #99, Hoover Motor Express #31, Bryant Heating & Cooling #54. -Rick

Looks real good. I'm in for one when you get them ready. Will you offer both the '57 & '58 versions in one kit or seperate kits for each year?

Answer's to some of the questions. The kits will be complete with no need for donor parts. I have upgraded to the Etzel style wheels a more accurate seat, and a rear end housing. Customer's will need to purchase decals from Michael at IndyCals. All of us in this little hobby/industry owe him our support. According to Michael's web site the separate decals for the 57' & 58' winner are listed at $7 each. The only specific differences that I can see from photos between the two years is that the 58' car had a roll bar hoop and Bryan also had a small nerf near his right elbow to keep him from rubbing the right rear wheel. He also had an extra windshield piece added since he was taller than Hanks. The Hoover Motor Express will require a different body mold and will be next up. Michael would get the first resin body to design and fit decals for it. In the mean time when I have all the metal and the rest of the molds done for the accesory pieces, and the color directions I'll do some sort of a launch. I'd say it would be in the next month's time frame. The cost of the kit will be $75 plus shipping. Just wanted to let everyone know that since purchasing the four master from Bill that we've made some progress and that they just aren't sitting around gathering dust.

Thanks harrymillerfan,
I believe Lance Sellers may have obtained the Blue Crown Master from Bill Jorgenson. I can only adhere to the belief that he will offer it at some time in the future.

Apologies for the delay. I've got two more weekends of racing here in Nor Cal. Will be done on the 15th. I wasn't happy with the way the wheels were coming out, so I am remolding them. A good timeframe would be the end of October. I have the metal now. Just need to do a build so that I can take digital images for the directions.
My Best, -Rick

What kind of yellow paint? It looks like almost a cream yellow? MCW 2015 yellow www.mcwautomotivefinishes.com/paint/racelist.htmlCalvin, I can't remember if you have an airbrush, but if you do MCW is the best and IMO easiest stuff to use. No thinning required, just plug and play. Goes on smooth and levels out perfectly. Similar to using Tamiya cans, just with an airbrush. The only main difference is, you have to clean your airbrush when done.

Have you used 2015 yellow before?
Is there any Lacquer rattle can out there as well? I know a few people have built this car, so they got to say what they used. ;D

I haven't used that specific color before, but I've used other MCW paints successfully.

I've spent some time researching the color. Having talked to crew men who worked race day in 57' & 58' they remember the yellow being 'richer' then the restored color of yellow. The car attempted to run at the Speedway all the way up until 1962 through several post-Salih owners so the paint on it is not original. There are good restored pictures here: www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/default.aspx?carID=15107&i=4 However these images from the conceptcarz website are obviously of the restored paint. Here is a race day image. From seeing the car at the museum in person, and several race day images, and also talking to opposing team race day mechanics I believe that the restored paint is a bit more on the 'yellow chiffon' side and a correct race day color for 57' & 58' would be a tad more towards the 'bright yellow' color swatch. Not advocating using 'bright yellow' but certainly needs to be just a bit richer yellow than what is seen in the conceptcarz website digital images. -Rick

What about Camel yellow? It is a bit more yellow'ee but not as bright. Nic No, Camel yellow is way too extreme. Most old pictures I've seen are always on more of the cream yellow look. I still think Daytona Yellow is the closest. Take a look at these pics firstturn.net/1957%20Indianapolis/index_3.htmCompare it too the yellow pit crew jackets.

Here is a race day image. IMO this picture has been adjusted darker/bolder than what it really is.

One always must take into account the age of the image, whether it was slide or film and then make an educated guess. I agree this is too harsh for that wonderful car. It was softer and paler.

SWT500 my sentiments exactly. Here is a photo of the First Turn Productions 'race day' image. Note the upholstery color. The restored car sports the original upholstery. In the First Turn Prod image it looks to be a dark maroon. Also note Sam the Man's facial color. It almost matches the color of the upholstery! In the modern Conceptcarz digital photography the upholstery is dark red with a gold metal flake hue to it so indeed the age and media of the older slides or films are misleading. The Conceptcarz color is close. However according to Norm Rapp, a legendary motorsports figure in Northern California and a (living) crewmember in both 57' & 58' on the Bignotti team. The correct color would be just a tad bit brighter than what is currrently on the restored car. In the overall scheme of things if one were to use the Conceptcarz images as a color swatch guide they would probably be comfortable with a very close rendering. -Rick

SWT500 my sentiments exactly. Here is a photo of the First Turn Productions 'race day' image. That photo tells you everything you need to know - compare the body color to the more standard yellow in the contingency markings - it is considerably more pale. One trick to decipher color from old photos is to find something in the photo that is a known quantity. The contingency markings would serve as that known quantity. For those of you familiar with Pantone colors I'd put the yellow in the Halibrand and Lodge decals at or near Pantone 116 - and the body color at or near Pantone 120. Comparing it to my photos of the car, I'd say the current restoration is a bit richer than the car depicted above, but it too shows that it's not as rich as the yellow in the contingencies.

It would be interesting to put the #99 Demler car from 1958 side by side with the 1957-58 Belond car. I believe the Belond car would be a softer, subtler shade.

Michael - great shots there, and that is a useful trick looking at contingencies. Let's not even get started on determining yellow from b&w! Ever try to do a WWI airplane? Yikes.
Anyway, that said, do you have opinion on the MCW paint?
