Interesting intro - the CGI got a little heavy at the end but it was pretty cool for a while. Oh and Musburger - we can see you tennis shoes Jordan

What a cool shot, The B2 Bomber flying over the Pagoda during the National Anthem!!!! Made me feel a lttle Patriotic... If you have never seen the B2 fly over in person, it is truely a site of a lifetime (and lack of sound until its passed). When it flys over the Rosebowl (twice now) it turns around right over my house.... Gotta Love It!! Chris

Nice to see that one of the smaller teams won instead of CG.

How can you show the race without showing Back Home Again In Indiana? Do they skip My Old Kentucky Home bfore the Derby? Never. I did record Jim Nabors with my digital camera but I was a long way from him in the paddock penthouse.

Now that I'm home from Indy, just a few thoughts: 1) Simona got some of the loudest applause during driver intros. She is poised to be a big star if she can get that first win.
2) Were any of you aware that Hildebrand's team was going to protest the race because Wheldon passed on the last yellow? There are film clips that show the lights were still green when Wheldon passed. Moot point.
3) Cara Lazier, Buddy's wife, is still super-hot looking. Something about her wearing a tight white top today.
4) I got to sit in the paddock penthouse, across from John Andretti's pit box. It was right ny Marco's, Danica's and Paul Tracy's pits. It's a great viewpoint to the race and if you get a chance, try and get tickets there sometime.
5) It seemed like there was an unusually large amount of people on the track before the race. I want to know how I can get a pass like that. Michael??!!!
6) I was very glad to see someone other than a Penske or Ganassi driver win. But it puzzles me that Dan Wheldon doesn't have a full-time ride.
7) I saw lots of empty seats on the inside (Tower Terrace) sections. Wonder if it had anything to do with traffic. The traffic was reportedly a nightmare before the race. I got there at 7 so it wasn't bad.
8) No matter how many times I go to Indy, I always get choked up during the traditional pre-race ceremonies. Today the National Anthem got me. Kelly Clarkson (who is looking a bit large these days) Seal and David Boston, did an outstanding job on the anthem.
That's all for now. I am fried after little sleep and too much food and heat.

I wondered about the yellow thing but I doubt IndyCar would reverse their call on the spot. If JR was going to win, they'd have to have made that call right then - call is the PT rule. I liked the anthem but the NASCAR guys were panning it - I like Kelly so don't ask me, I'm biased LOL BTW, I think Weldon should be put in the #6 - never been a Briscoe fan! Jordan

One of the most enjoyable 500's. So happy for Bryan Herta and his team and Sam Schmidt. Sam owns Bryan's car and they all worked as a team. Having the opportunity to spend alot of time with Sam's team this year made it even better!!
And yes, Kara Lazier is beautiful. Buddy,Kara and the kids stop by last night and spent time visiting with Michael, my son and myself. What a great family they are. Watch for Flinn in the up coming years...he is already a 4 time national karting champ. Buddy wanted to make sure we got a picture with him so we could say we knew Flinn when he was just a kid...And his daughter Jacqueline pulling a Dukes of Hazzard diving through the rental car window was priceless.
Plus having dinner with Michael and Stu on Friday night.
By far the best month of May I have ever had!!!!!

By far the best month of May I have ever had!!!!! Same here. Buddy and family stopping by was an especially great treat! It was so gracious of them to stop by and fighting all that traffic because they knew you were leaving last night. Kara is super nice. She saw me today shooting them and Buddy during pre-race ceremonies and asked me to send her the pics of them.

It was a great race. I, too, love it that a smaller team was able to win.
The traffic did seem a bit heavier then past years. The cars started to line up outside my house by 4:30am. By 5:00am, I couldn't see the end of the line!
Wish I could've touched base with a few of you, maybe next year.

Track goes yellow clearly after Weldon passed - thankfully this races isn't like the '81 or '02 affair. At the 0:30 mark you can see Weldon in first and the lights are still green.

Yes, the light did not go yellow until after Wheldon passed. But it should have. IMO, they left it green until it resolved itself, with the rest of the field bearing down on them at 220 MPH. As spotters, we call it when we see it and do not wait until the yellow comes out. It was absolutely deplorable that Indycar hesistated upwards of seven seconds. That was a receipe for disaster. Every spotter in the place called it and yet the officials could not see or react to it? Happy for Wheldon but in reality, Hildebrand still won the race. As for the empty seats, they are basically unsellable. The fans realize that raising the walls for NASCAR and the construction of the F1 suites have diminished the sight lines from several places at the track. This is especially true for the Tower Terrace and North Vista stands. The magnitude of the Pagoda blocks a lot of the view formerly enjoyed by the folks in TT. I watched the local re-broadcast of the race and Jim Nabors was shown. I have no explanation why it was not on the original but should have been. I'm sure the fans really enjoyed the race. Last year at 100 laps, folks were pouring out of the exits. Perhaps that was due to the heat but also the lack of excitement on the track. This year, nearly everyone stayed. It was a memorable race.

It's irrelevant whether the light was yellow or green. Hildebrand was a stricken car and eligible to be passed. Brian Barnhart confirmed this.

Walking back to my car, I was listening to the post-race on 1070 and that was the first I'd heard that Panther was going to protest the results. By the time I was an hour into my ride home, exactly what you said, a stricken car can be passed, had made it on the broadcast. Thank God, no real controversy.

By the way Michael, a few of the memorable paint/decal schemes that I really like were:
1) Yes I liked RHR's. Since you already had most of his made up, can you do the whole thing with ABC?
2) Ana Beatriz. Her cars had my favorite colors but the markings were kind of boring.
3) My absolute favorite was Schekter's. That big "REDLINE" marking was outstanding to my eye. That car was one of the easiest to see from the stands at any speed and it looked great.
One of my least favorite's was Pippa Mann's. I love Armando Montelongo. His show, Flip This House, is one of my "must-watch" shows, but seeing his face behind the front wheels was a bit weird.

They did show "Back Home Again in Indiana." My edit is supposed to say "here it is" not "he it is". I posted this during the commercial break after the anthem so I thought we were missing it but it was shown, ABC did good - thankfully BM only gets minimal time on air during the race.

From Jayski Hendrick & Penske...in Indycar?: Spotted on the grid of the Centennial Indy 500 were Hendrick Motorsport decals on the wings of two Team Penske Racers. The decals were on the inside rear wingplate on Will Power's #6 Dallara Honda and #12 Ryan Honda. This leads to speculation of an alliance of Penske and Hendrick in IndyCar especially due to the entry of Chevrolet engines into the open wheel series in 2012. Penske officials are keen to add Simona de Silvestro to their team but are having financial issues with three cars and would not comment on the why HMS decals were on the two cars. An alliance with Hendrick, a big Chevrolet dealer, could help.(see image at Auto123)(5-30-2011) Interesting!?!? You know Roger wore a Hendrick hat in Daytona's victory lane in 2008..... Jordan

Penske hiring Simona?? Hmmm that would be interesting. I am definitely a fan of her's and think if she was with a top team, she could flourish. I wonder now, since AA is probably losing Danica, that they'd make a pitch for Simona or if they'd mend the fence with Dan Wheldon. Simona, in spite of her Indy result, is the star on the rise along with guys like Hildebrand, Bell and Hinchcliffe. Who would Penske cut loose? My guess is Briscoe, but that's not going on a limb.

Just got back home...why is it the drive home seems to take twice as long as the drive down. My musings...the race was fantastic, loved the double wide restarts, 4 wide into turn 1? are you kidding me...awesome. Friday night's Silver Crown race was one of the better of late...good closing laps battle between Levi Jones and Jerry Coons Jr....but they have to get rid of the 50 lap competition yellow flag to change tires...it's the Hoosier 100 not the Hoosier twin 50's. Lot's of great vintage midgets, sprints, Indy cars at the track on Saturday...lot's of old drivers as well. I love to watch the autograph hounds...they get an autograph and then ask..'who is that?' Memerobilia show...major dissapointment...came ready to spend...nothing to spend it on. I picked Wheldon and Hildebrand in our pool....I couldn't lose no matter how they called it. As AJ says...all in all it was a great weekend. My 35 consecutive Indy, Dad's 50th (his name is in the program!) Oh yeah....we were in the Dollar Inn right next door to the shooting that occured Denny's on Friday night. Ya gotta love a motel with a sign that says..no refunds after 15 minutes.

My race weekend was an incredible high followed by major disappointments. Friday night my wife and I were invited to have dinner with Mr. 500 himself, Andy Granatelli ! I can not say enough kind words about Andy, his wife Dolly and brother Vince, a priceless experience I will always cherish! I also got to sit next to Dick Mittmen ( hope I spelled that right), who has been a sports writer here in Indy since before I was born, he shared several stories and told me how he would plan stories for the month of May when it was the whole month, very interesting. Also had Parnelli dining in the room next to us! Sat. morning my wife and I made it to the track at 8:15, we needed to be set up by 8:45 for the memorabilia show. several yellow shirts gave us directions to where we needed to go only to be told by the last two we encountered, that we were to late and could not drive up to unload, so we left. Sadly, the response of those putting the show on was that we should have been there earlier. There was no mention in their instructions of any cut off time for driving up to unload, only when to be set up by and when the show was to open. Their response (that I learned of this evening ), indicates to me that as long as they get their money, they really don't give a crap about anyone else! I will no longer be participating in one of the two shows (you can probably guess which one). Race morning I awoke throwing my guts up numerous times, needless to say I spent the 95th running at home on the couch! Some parting words of wisdom to share from Vince Granatelli - Remember to be nice, and if you can't be nice, be NASTY ! Lance

Lance - in all fairness to Ted, an email sent on 4/30 says "Once the public gates are open at 8am we will not be allowed to unload in the courtyard."
Sorry you were sick yesterday, but that dinner with Andy Granatelli sounds awesome - I'm sure you will treasure that forever!

Yes Michael , after thinking about this you may be right, they never had my email address because another person arranged for the table and that person may or may not have mentioned it but I honestly can't remember. I guess I will just have to take my medicine like a big boy and get over it. Proof you shouldn't post when your pissed! Lance

It was a well attended meet. A lot better than putting up with the fairgrounds circus. Only minor problem was the lack of any signage pointing people to the swap. Makes a lot more sense to have the thing at the track than up on 38th St...

Home again. Great weekend, hot down in turn one (the one and only SNAKE PIT) Lost my camera, fell right off the truck, only after getting some great pics of Danny Sullivans 1985 spin and win, and meeting Simona walking down the plaza on Thursday, #%&$ happens, then the radiator in my Hummer took a %^&*. Its Indy!! Nothing could ruin my weekend, shootout at Dennys, Priceless. 28 years havent missed a race got some great pics on Saturday, Janet Guthrie was kind enough to have a photo with my niece and mom, classy lady. Gary B took time out for a pic, Wally D, and jerry Sneva also. Thinkin about the whole week next year qualifying and the race

A great weekend. Saturday was the best ever. I was looking at the models at the museum and struck up a conversation with the guy standing next to me. Turns out it was"mcsparty', then had a great chat with "500legends" and "indycals" over at the show. I really wanted to get AJ's autograph for a great friend, but that was almost like winning the lottery. Missed talking to Lance at the show, too bad about his misadventure. I wish the show could have been larger, as it was a real crush in there, and the line for autographs was insane. Race day was great. We were high up in the North Vista and the wind kept us from getting too hot. It was hard to believe how badly the Target team screwed up on the fuel deal, after being in control most of the day. Also hard to believe how much of a nonfactor Penske was. Too bad about JR, but I have no problem with Weldon, although I'm not a huge fan. 2 wins, 2 seconds, and 1 third in the last 7 years and he was not on the "33 greatest" list? That is hard for me to figure out. Now for the major disapointment of my weekend. There were some major storms in Northern Indiana Sunday afternoon ( I live in Southwest Michigan), so with 12 laps to go, the local ABC station cut away from the race to cover the weather. so I have on my DVR, the prerace show and 188 laps of the 500. Hopefully my son has the whole thing and I will have a copy. Maybe next year, the board members could have a small get togeather Saturday afternoon at the museum. Just a thought. Take Care Craig
