Craig, I have the whole race and pre-race on DVD. PM me if you want a copy. I'll be doing the ESPN Classic version that aired last night also. And if you want the IMS radio broadcast, see my thread on the iTunes podcast. I got it downloaded as soon as I got home Sunday night. It's too awesome to hear it twice in the same day.

Out of the ten 500's I've been to this was the best one. Started out crappy with rainouts of the midget race at the Speedrome on Wed. & Terre Haute Sprints on Thurs. However Bill J & I drove out to Jungle Park Speedway in Rockville and toured the joint. That was cool. Dropped in on the Kenyon Compound in Lebanon on the way back. Got to meet Don for the first time. Being a promoter and him being a promoter we seemed to click on some common topics. What can you say about Mel he is the greatest. It was dinner time and he invites us into his home for over an hour. Went to the Restoration shop and checked out the dilapidated Bush Stadium track. Got to see the second most sought after tour in Indy; Lance's collection and future builds. (Sorry Lance the most sought after tour would still be the Speedway Museum Basement). Got to meet up with Roger & Walt @ Lance's. Friday, finally a race! And several succesful CA drivers that we are friends with had great finishes in the Silver Crown race. Saturday great to see and touch base with him at the memorabilia show. Night Before the 500 was a very good midget race. And of course the 500, one for the ages. Watched it from NW Vista up high & have since watched it twice on TV. I'm pretty sure that JR was out fo fuel and that had a hand in the accident. When he went by Bill J and I it sounded like he was out. If he was out and was not under power the car would be unbelievably tight to the point that it would not have turned. The other thing that struck me was Kimble. He was definitely out and coasting. Why didn't he utilze the pit apron lane?
The other thing you can ascertain from TV was that with 2 laps to go the scrawling scoring data on the top of the screen has Wheldon in fifth place 7.75 seconds back on lap 197. Amazing!
Thanks for a great time Bill.

Craig, I think the Saturday meeting idea of yours is a great idea. Can't believe we haven't thought of something like that before. This year I only saw Michael (Indycals), Lazierfan (Eric), John (Johnny Lightning), and Roy (Indyroy). It's always great to see people and a get together sounds awesome.

I didn't write it but my friend who I hooked on Indy (took him to the '95 classic) posted it on his FB page and thought you guys were just as twisted as me to get a good laugh out of it.
Did anyone see Pippa Mann after the race? She looked awful!! Her drink system had failed and she became dehydrated in the heat of the day and was cramping severely when she was getting out of the car. That's a tough girl right there - she got my respect!

I suggested a get together last yoar on carb day, The reason I suggested Saturday was that a lot of us don't get into town until then. For me the 500 is a weekend thing, Sat and Sun, I get in about 10 am Sat and head for home as soon as possible after the race. I would like to be there Carb day but it's not possible. Take Care Craig

On the last lap let them race to the yellow/checker. and just as the leader takes the white flag there's a Mike Conway type crash in turn three....

Regardless of what Brian Barnhart may have said to cover his tracks, there is nothing in the book about passing a disabled car. If its not in the rule book, then the assumption is that there is no prohibition against passing a disable car, right? Wasn't this handled consistent with the way its happened in similar past circumstances?

SWT, with all due respect, while I understand your point that the yellow should have come out sooner, I can't come to grips with the argument that JR should have been the winner, simply because he caused the yellow. That just goes against what every short-track race I've seen (or been in) in my life has engrained in me. The logical scenario would be that the guy that caused the yellow goes to the back, which might even have made Rahal the winner, depending at which point Wheldon passed him and when the yellow light came on. Of course, it’s all a moot point, since our opinions don’t matter, but fun to discuss all the same. In the end, Oriol and your team did an awesome job. I was definitely pulling for him also.

What if JR would hit the wall coming out of T2 and he managed to limp the car a reasonable speed around the remainder of the track?
Does it all come down to how quickly they call the yellow?

That just goes against what every short-track race I've seen (or been in) in my life has engrained in me. The logical scenario would be that the guy that caused the yellow goes to the back, which might even have made Rahal the winner, depending at which point Wheldon passed him and when the yellow light came on. Ya know, that's a tremendously great point. My initial reaction within seconds of watching Dan cross the line was, "Wait a minute, can he pass under yellow? Is this Paul Tracy all over again?" But after thinking it through and going back and forth with my buddy over the next few minutes, we agreed that if you are the car that caused the yellow, all bets are off. Our conclusion was similar to the "wounded car" scenario put forth by Barnhart a short time later. But yes, the short track analogy is a good one. Cause the yellow, and it's to the back you go! (Along those lines, does anyone know what the ruling was on Sullivan's spin and win? Was he placed at the rear? Or did pitting for new tires make that a moot point?)

So, if the leader crashes or spins all the other cars have to stop?

On the last lap let them race to the yellow/checker. and just as the leader takes the white flag there's a Mike Conway type crash in turn three.... Makes it more exciting for the fans.

The leader did not crash in turn 1 or 2, but within sight of the finish. For my money, this was a one in a million situation. Forget about everything else and consider my contention that the instant JR hits the wall, the yellow should come out. How can anyone disagree with that?
If he then crosses the finish line as the leader, so be it. The delay allowing Wheldon to catch and pass him is what I take issue with. Why the delay and why so long? I see both sides of this but believe JR won the race in this very unusual scenario.

JR did cross the finish line and did not come to rest until the 1st turn.
