After thinking about it for a while, 8 days ago I decided to get one of Lance's - Chris Etzel's 1959-60 Watson Roadster and in 1 week its was already waiting for me at the box. The first thing that I said was "wow what a nice kit!" Since my own adventures with resins I have a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into these kits. Some of the detail with this Watson kit, just blows me away. Just looking at the ways some of these parts were molded has even help myself for future situations. I have so many irons in the fire right now I have no clue when I'll start actually building it? I might do it sooner rather than later? On most of my WIP's I like to take a pic of the kit before I really dig into just for a nice before and after. The body is absolutely clean and sharp! I can already tell this is going to be an honor to build! I went ahead and droped the resin parts into wesley's tire bleach. (I call it Kool-Aid )

I have to say it might be the finest resin work I've ever seen. I'm going to mod mine up and do the 62 winner since I already have done the 59 winner (and yes, I have a 62 winner, but I'd like to re-do it.)

I have a question about getting the mold release off. What is the best way to tell that its off for good? Because I've had the resin soaking for more than 6 hrs now and looking at it doesn't look any different. This is the 2nd time I've ever tried to get mold release off by Tire bleach, but it never seems to be a thing I can really get understood.

I would suggest getting a mechanics type hand soap like Fast Orange that will dissolve silcone, grease, oil, etc. I use warm water and a toothbruch and go over the kit like crazy. After it is cleaned, I make sure to dry the entire model with lint free clothes. I haven't had any problems. If by chance you do, I would actually clean the body in lacquer thinner. Nic

i've used it for years to clean resin and have never had problems with it. just make sure you rinse it well afterwards and that you use gloves as this stuff is really tough on the skin! duane

The "Flying W's" are back on track!or in this case on the bench! ;D I pulled it out last night and started building on my oldest car to date. Which was kinda strange since I was in kind of a nascar mood prior. Damn indycars always pulling my interest away from stock cars.

Does anyone know if I can use Tamiya Clear over these new kit decals? I though I would ask before I had to test If not then maybe Testors Lacquer would work?

I will toss my two cents in here. You should always test no matter what anyone says. I have several friends that work at Testors (I live in Rockford Illinois)in the mixing area, and I have done work for them myself, it is a common practice to make changes to the mix of all paints and the mix can be affected by these changes but keep the same color, also the vendors that supply chemicals can be changed at any time. Any of these factors can effect the way decals will react when oversprayed with clear. This is how Testors does it I would assume Tamiya is the same. Does anyone know if I can use Tamiya Clear over these new kit decals? I though I would ask before I had to test If not then maybe Testors Lacquer would work?

Hey, I grew up in Rockford! In the late '60s my step-dad was friends with a big shot at Testors (who was also the father of actress Susan St. James - now way off topic!) and he gave me a huge slot car set and a bunch of paint. I think he was cleaning out his basement.
Thanks for jogging a fond memory.

Does anyone know if I can use Tamiya Clear over these new kit decals? Yes I think so. I tested Tamiya clear over the 1960 winner decals and they held up just fine.....But.....from past experiences, test sheets dont mean crap sometimes

This is looking sweet. And at 60 degrees! Wow. We'd probably have dew like a thunderstorm went through at that and painting would be impossible.

YES Calvin! Stick to a "kit" project for awhile to relax your brain. I'm just about burnt on scratch bashing for awhile. Nice and green in the Northwest!

Very nice paint job. I have one of these on the back burner and like to watch how to do it. Nearly 100 in upstate NY yesterday!

That nose looks like, well, a nose.....two nostrils.
Nicely done Calvin and it's nice to see you back in here doing your 3 day model WIPs.
And yes, it is very hot here in the midwest. Chicago has been toasty for 6 days and it's going to return to the 90s tomorrow. Just in time for me to walk 18 holes at my local course.

Thanks! I'm very happy with it so far, this kit so far has been an honor to build. Its also a fast kit to build, which I like.
For the seam lines on the body..... I used a x-acto knife like paint brush and some washed down flat black to give the seams a more realistic look. Just dip the knife in flat black wash, then start following the groves and the wash just goes were you want and is very easy to do.

Is the roll bar a decal or painted? If painted, why isn't the hood hinge painted also?
Looks super. That hinge just bothers me. Oh, did the decals come with the kit?

I did 5 light coats of Clear today (1 coat every hour) Everything went smooth, no problems, no drama.....just a boring day of clear coating....which is fine with me Tomorrow I'll rub it smooth with some Tamiya compound.

Today, I color sanded and realized that still didn't have enough coats of clear over the decals to blend the decal lines out, so......I went ahead and put three more coats on today and this evening I'm currently color sanding again and it looks great. The numbers and the large logos actually look painted on! Just like they should. Tomorrow I'll rub it out.
