Well here we go again, another project. For many-many months I've been Really wanting to build this Lola that Al Unser drove in the first ever CART race in Phoenix. I like the black #2 's (as you can tell), I also like the high downforce setup and of course its part chaparral and has Pennzoil on it! so.....last night I was looking at my 1978 winner that needed to be re-done anyway and well....the rest is history. Im going to turn this "gluebomb" into the 1979 Pennzoil Lola! Then later on I will get another Lola to redo the 1978 winner I built this Lola 2 years ago and I really didn't know what I was doing, The paint job is horrible, I screwed up the windscreen. Long story short: Needs re-done. As you can see I have a hell of a lot to do. I've already started taking things off.

Always wanted to build both myself, but I only have one Lola. Keep getting out bid. I guess you can find most decals you need, I guess you'll have to do the number yourself. Let me know what you do. Good luck.

Im using all sorts of different decals to get this one done. I had to draw up my own # 2's on Paint believe it or not The Pennzoil logos are all different from the 2k's Pennzoil logos. The Pennzoil logos on my drawing is for the front nose. BTW this picture is to scale of my original drawings, if anyone wants to check my work

I striped the paint off with Lacquer thinner Then cut the back off the engine cover The radiators needs to be shortened up I used the Penske PC6 rear wing and took some styrene to get rid of the dual foil. Then I added that huge wickerbill! LOL ;D I also had to cut the angle down on the wing strut to give that tremendous angle to the whole wing.

How much fun is this group! I love it that you "see" a project like I do and then make it happen. For me it is like my modeling work...only I don't have to build it. Thanks for your projects. I enjoy them.

I "re-did" my decals. My first set needed improvement I just got done printing them and they look pretty darn good for a ink jet sheet Its amazing how most of the pennzoil logos are different from each other on this car. Also note that Im Using a combination of Fred Cady, Indycals, and my own "Home Made" Sheet as seen below

Hey,
You stole my idea...just kidding. I actually just picked up a 78 lola from Bill off ebay planning on doing this car. Since you already have decals made ...would you be willing to do an extra set for me.
Thanks, Eric

Then I got the rear wing painted and Stuck a Pennzoil logo on! That big wickerbill is so funny! ;D Note the adjustment holes on that wicker too! Im really having fun! BTW Im using a Fred Cady Pennzoil logo on this rear wingHere is compare and contrast to a Short oval wing and the speedway wing. Note the huge angle I had to set the pennzoil wing back!

Once again I went back and re-did things, this time I totally overhauled the # 2 logo here is the before and after or in this case after and before I drew the first (right side) number too small to begin with, which didn't give me the pixels to work with. On the new number I used the whole screen to begin with, which gave me more pixels. Now I feel better that its getting close.....I think its almost there? Also I might add, I did this on Microsoft Paint

The rear wing endplate is really throwing me in the photo. Is there some photographic perspective effect to explain the slanted look to the logos, or are Pennzoil and the #2 supposed to have that "skewed" appearance?

Once again I improved the sheet once more! I worked on the 2's some more, fixed the pennzoil's up and.....I think they are ready now!

I got all the decals on the rear wing! They look good! My home made decals handled the Decal solvent very well! The #2 and Pennzoil logo are my own and the Goodyear is an indycal The Pennzoil as seen above is a Fred Cady The Pennzoil is a Fred Cady and the #2 is my own.

Looks great so far Chaparral2k.
I make a lot of my own decals too but I have a question. Was your #2 printed on white decal paper and then cut out? Clear paper would be to translucent I would think. Just wondering.

Next I had to move the fuel inlet over mid section of the tub. I drilled it out and then used a 3/16 end mill to give that flat bottom. Then I used a small ball mill to put a chamfered edge on the inlet Then I panted and decaled the cowl On the cowl the Pennzoil and #2 decals are mine and the rest is indycals

All I can say is WOW!! This just might be your best project, what with all the work on the decals as well as the car itself.
One little suggestion: Re-post the photo of the real car down here so we don't have to scroll to the top of the page to see how things match up.
Otherwise, 2 thumbs up.

Why is Cosworth printed backwards on the right side?

Why is Cosworth printed backwards on the right side? The name appears twice on the cam covers - one right side up, one upside down - I guess this was probably because the covers were interchangeable from one side to the other and they wanted to make sure that no matter how it was put on, the name would appear right side up.
