Gentlemen: The Novi is one of the most famous cars to grace the Indy 500. The story begins in 1941, when the famed motor is set into a 1935 Miller Ford front wheel drive. The car has incredible horsepower and torque and Ralph Hepburn puts a wood block under the accelerator to keep from flooring the accelerator and spinning the tires at high speeds(!). He comes in fourth. When the Speedway reopens in 1946, a new car (with Kurtis chassis), isn’t ready on first day qualifying but shows it’s speed by out qualifying the Pole winner by 7 mph(!). Note where the 3 carburetors are located behind the firewall… Starts 19th and is in the lead in 12 laps. But gremlins strike, and the “Novi Curse” is born… Dan Parke’s build of this car here: mb2501.proboards.com/thread/10659/novi-beginnings-finishedSo when 1947 rolls around, the Novi is one of the favorites. The car has been repainted and has a new sponsor in Mobil. Also, Welch gets Frank Kurtis to build another chassis, so there are 2 entries in ‘47. Cliff Bergere and Herb Ardinger are the drivers. Bergere spins a few times... But he qualifies second in the #18 car. Ardinger qualifies 4th.Front row 1947: Bergere leads the first 23 laps, but is out on lap 62. When Ardinger pits #54, Bergere takes over and finishes 4th. Here’s where I am… Seat detail… Later that year, a canopy is made and the Novi is sent to Bonneville to Ab Jenkins, a veteran of several speed runs. He's sick, so he gets his son Marv to attempt the runs. With fingers crossed, the younger Jenkins sets 5 National Class D records with the fastest being 179.434... Moving along… Comments, questions welcomed! Thanks for looking! Tim

The masking on the nose looks challenging. You pulled it off very nicely. I do like that color scheme.

The Bonneville car looks like an early Aeroscreen concept.

Tim, I absolutely love it. Growing up, every time we went to the speedway was another excuse for my dad to tell me about the Novis of his childhood. How I wish I could have heard them scream. Beautiful start on yours!

Well I finally finished this one…didn’t know how it would end up, but it came out OK… For the first 23 laps, this is what the competition saw… I came around to loving this livery… Some interesting facts about this Kurtis Novi, first built in 1946…Indy qualifying… 1946-133.944 mph Hepburn(fastest speed by 7 mph: started 19th 1947-124.957 mph Bergere (started 2nd) 1948-131.603 mph Nalon(pole) 1949-132.939 mph Nalon(pole) 1950-DNQ 1951-136.49 mph Nalon(pole) 1952-139.03 mph Chet Miller (fastest speed started 27th) 1953-135.46 mph Nalon started 9th You can tell why Duke Nalon is the driver that comes to mind with this car… Competitive at Indy for 8 years! Perhaps the most famous car “to never win the Indy 500”… Thanks for stopping by! Comments, questions, welcome! Tim

I love it. One question, what paint did you use for the cream colour? I need some of that!

That's a beautiful beast! How did you accomplish the white stripe, paint or decal?

Guys: I really appreciate the kind words! Yes, the decals and paint job were the hardest part of this build… Articwolf: I used enamel because I can’t find a good lacquer…pretty sure this is rebranded Krylon…started me thinking I need to do the 1937 winner with the same paint before it gets old… Brian: Decals…but the stripe from the nose back was cut from white decal paper…I widened it slightly as it went back…I copied the white decal sheet, cut it out and used the nose scallops as a template… Bobby: The decals as printed are difficult to get right unless cut into small pieces. Also, they were very slim which can lead to difficulty lining them up. That’s why I cut the slightly wider, white decal paper… All in all, a fun build! Thanks Lance and Gary! Tim
