The actual color that AAR used on the Gurney cars was Cadillac Spectre Blue Firemist. The GM Firemist colors were a very fine metallic and were used a lot in the late 50's and the '60's. Scalefinishes sells that color in either an actylic enamel or a lacquer. The lacquer requires a clear coat, the enamel is gloss. The paint comes aribrush ready to spray.
For the rattle can users, the TS-53 is fair but my guess would be TS-64 Dark Mica Blue would be closest. A shade darker than the TS-53 and the "mica" Tamiya paints are a finer metallic than their "metallic" paints.
For the Lloyd Ruby car the Tamiya TS-39 Mica Red would be close. The real car red was Candy Apple Red, clear red over a gold base. Naturally folks are going to paint their kits with whatever they prefer, as long as you're happy with it, go for it.

Using the MCW automotive paint reference guide, that Cadillac color is shown in 1968 listings, not shown in prior years. So, we’re AAR colors different in 1966 than in 1968? Or does MCW have it wrong? BillJ, your last line is good advice, I won’t lose a lot of sleep over this, just being curious.

I checked the Auto Color Library and you are correct Dan, the Spectre firemist does not show up until 1968. There are dark blue metallics and pearls in 1966 and 1967 that look similar. I forget the source of my Cadillac blue information, I do recall Dan Gurney saying the cars were a Cadillac paint, I doubt he specified a year or paint name. The Spectre Firemist may have been picked when looking for a color for the MPC 68 Kit.
At this point I plan to paint mine with the Tamiya cans, I'll have to shoot some spoons to see which I prefer. I do stand by the Candy Apple Red for the red on the Lloyd Ruby car. I have looked closely at that one in person and it's what it's painted with. On mine, I will likely use the Tamiya Mica Red just because it's way easier and the car is the size of a small candy bar. It looks like Kevin used a plain red on his buiid up and the model looks super.
Keep in mind many military modelers will often adjust colors on their projects to account for scale. So using the exact paint color may net create as believable replica. Your models, your guess as to what looks right. Anyway you shake it, the Eagles are great looking cars/kits.

Thanks for the GREAT info on the paint colors for these cars. I did order the 68 Firemist blue from scale finishes. I've already got the Red for Ruby car.
