Went back and found this.
Obviously a Euro perspective but might interest some of you. Expect some of you to say 'but they left out this and didn't mention that'......

I had to go on google maps and look it up. Yeah, it was Iowa. Knoxville, just outside of Des Moines. It turned out to be a fun night, really friendly people too. Indeed. They were friendly when I went as well. They’ll tell you they are the sprint car capital of the world but I still say that’s Indiana. Lol

Well.
Hope you chaps do not mind but I have saved those pics of the dirt racing (and Lance. Your avatar always cracks me up!).
Always appreciate finding out more. And this was an eye opener.
Guess a thread is an evolving entity so I went back to remember what started all of this.
Oh yeah. Chaparral. Simpson helmets. karting. Racing on dirt.
Calvin. Spotted the trophy in hand. How big is the trophy cabinet? And deffo looking forward to more on this kits evolution.

Lance and Walt never cease to amaze with what they dig out. The first photo is the John Zink Spl. (Offy)which was the 1956 Indy winner. This is probably Jud Larson the next year. Could this be the Indiana State Fairgrounds? The second is the Harrison Spl with Chevy power with maybe Ronnie Duman driving. The third is the Dave Laycock first generation Mongoose with a Ford 4 cam. Ruby driving or someone else? A trip down memory lane which you can see has faded some for me. Thanks for sharing, Lance. Horse barns in the background check out as the Indy mile. However Larson won the 57 Hoosier Hundred in the #2, an upright dirt Watson. I’d imagine this then is Jimmy Reece. Piloting the Indycar as a second John Zink entry.

Calvin. Spotted the trophy in hand. How big is the trophy cabinet? Lol no trophy cabinet. I threw all the 2nd and 3rd place trophies away. I actually don't like collecting any materialistic things. I don't even display my model builds. I use to be bad at hoarding and collecting everything, but I changed, the only "materialistic" things I enjoy collecting is assets, because assets pay me, so I can have the time and freedom to collect memories with the people I love, which is my true passion.

I love the story, Art! Thank you for giving us the details on the helmet and great shots of your Kart. I had a Go-Karting career, 20 years ago with a similar helmet. LOL I love that video, Calvin! It brought back some memories. I ran my brother's BRM chassis with a Yamaha can on it around that same timeframe for a handful of races. I started back up this year a little bit. I have been running a KT 100 on dirt once a month since May for the first time in 30 years!

We have a kart dirt track here in Spokane.

There's a dirt track here in Spanaway also! A short track for sure but...it's a barn type setting. Small grandstands also. The pits are outside of the building. I've only been there once with a friend that raced. He wasn't running that day though.

I'm glad I created this thread as it's a good notebook for myself. I can look through my notes and pick up where I left off. (FYI update coming soon)
