Ive been asked many times in the last couple years, "Calvin, the chaparral 2k is your favorite race car, when are you going to do your own version?" I think its time. Im in a good place at the moment with my business, I feel like I can finally do this car justice from my perspective. Ive actually started on my own version of this car more than 15 years ago with a full-size replica which I doubt I'll ever finish, (Its basically a rough blob of fibreglass covered over a cardboard mock-up) Then I attempted to build one out of styrene in 1/12 scale. Then Ive been fiddling around with my own idea of a Chaparral 2k in 1/25 for the last decade. The only thing at this point I have done is the front nose which I made a resin copy off my styrene bondo sculpted master....and NO this isn't cut off Bill Jorgenson kit, the trained eye can clearly see its my own design, I've looked at this car so much, this is what I see when I look at the 2k nose. This WIP thread will be a complete full-blown detailed documentation of this future resin kit. Im getting to that point where Im having a hard time remembering what I've done or need to do on projects, so Im going to type my own notes on this thread in the "Calvin's notes section" just so I can remember what I need to do next. And ANYONE can chime in or question what Im doing. I love constructive opinions and comments. You CANT HUIRT my feeling on a WIP, I WANT someone to point out a potential mistake before I produce. and finally, this is NOT going to be a full detail kit, its going to be a detailed curbside. I don't have MFH talent or tools to pull off a perfectly fitted engine cover. LOL

I know I've been hounding you on this kit for years. I appreciate your effort on this, I'm getting greedy because I'm not getting any younger.

Well, this looks hopeless! LOL Its doomed. I don't know what Im doing... Using Clidinst drawings, but I do have my own idea for making the nose look aesthetically pleasing. The 2k has one of the most confusing noses for model makers to replicate.

Calvin,
Just a little history, most people don't know the car had louvers over the radiator outlets on the side pods at some point during the season. I remember while in Indy last year for the Harvest Grand Prix talking with Michael and we found a few pics of the car with them. This is one I will be eagerly waiting for.
Eric.

Yep, the first time they ran those louvres on the radiator outlets was at Mid-Ohio. I know they ran them again, but I cant confirm the location. I love all versions of the 2k, but my favorite version is the 1980 Michigan 200 winner. The trained eye can see the rear wing endplates are different sizes, the right is BIGGER and the left is no wider than the wing width. Also notice the rear wing and front wings are THINNER. Then in this shot you can see the thinner front wings and it is cut down and you can tell the mounting points are actually larger than the width of wing

15 year ago when I was young and dumb I attempted to make a 1/1 scale Chaparral 2k. LOL and no I have ZERO intentions of finishing it. I still have the tub but not the messy fiberglass (What a mess)

The sim rig would need a suction fan to simulate the ground effects. LOL Im 6' 3" and I fit terribly in this tub, so that tells me I got the dimensions correct. LOL

I just realized I can tailor most of my 1982 Wildcat white metal parts to the 2k for my masters.

One thing that gets overlooked and assumed is the traditional nice smooth rounded radius style of radiator exits. The 1980 Winner had very odd-shaped exits. LOL I'll let the pics speak for themselves. The left side had a big bulge and the right had a flat section then ramps up.

Ive made up my mind that I'm going to make the radiator exits seprate from the body. They already are seprate from the main bodywork. I'm going to design it to insert from the bottom.
I'm also going to design the transaxle and ground effect tunnels to be seprate from the bodywork too.

Looking forward to the progress. Make sure this is room for a scale JR in there! Jordan LOL if only Rick Mears drove the 2k, it would be first prettiest LOL jk Now! I'm actually considering making a full undertray from the front of the cockpit bulkhead, back to the tail, because I'm going to have the cockpit insert, the radiator insert, and those need to be covered up. Just like most Indycar or F1 plastic kits have a full bottom undertray you glue onto the bottom of the main body. You know Id sure like to be able to add a figure to this kit, but it would need the proper Darth Vader Simpson helmet.

Calvin, I like the way you're approaching this and those are great reference shots. Yes, there's so much to this car that most always overlook. That's why I'm trying to design this kit so I can easily add different parts to it as I have intentions of making a 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1982. Of course, they all have different things about them.
