I also want to say, before I get asked, no I won't be doing a full engine detail removable engine cover, that would be a nightmare to do. The engine cover would NEVER fit right. just like plastic kits, thin resin moves with any little change and it would be terrible and look awful.

I photoshopped out the shadows in this picture so I can see the rear end better, you can see a gauge in there

I would love to find a cheap 1:1 1980 style Simpson Bandit to draw in 3D.
I have taken a deeper dive into researching IndyCar helmets this year and the Bandit shape varies a lot over time. For example, even though Mears won in Simpson Bandits in 1979 and 1984, they are very different helmets.
I am excited about this one, Calvin. Anything we can do to help out? Cannot imagine many have researched this car more than you but we always are learning, aren't we?

Oh, I'm sure I'll need help along the way, as usual. I have potentially some big announcements coming soon. I'm mostly writing down my plan of attack on the 2k, right now. My goal is to make the 2k my best effort yet.

The helmet in the Monogram sprint car kits is not exactly the same as the original RX1 that Big Al and JR wore initially in 79 and 80. The one in the sprint car kits is the Bandit that came out a little later, around 84 or 85, although I think they both did eventually wear them. I have both styles of those helmets from quarter midgets and karting in the 80's. When I was racing quarter midgets, I was one of the first kids to get an RX in 1980 and it was awesome. I felt very fortunate. It was so friggen cool to have the same helmet my Indy Car heroes had, and I got yellow because of Big Al. I'm really looking forward to Calvin's release. Wearing the 1980 RX in '84. The Bandit in 85.

Wow. Great shots these two.
But hang on.
Is this on dirt?
Forgive my Euro ignorance, but Karting on a dirt track?
This was some kinda dirt track mini series? Guess if there is the big stuff there is no reason not to do it with the smaller stuff......

Yes quattro...it's dirt. My Cousin did the same thing. Except he did the OUTLAW carts with the wings and all. They run those still in Red Bluff, California.

Done indoor and big outdoor over here but never seen a dirt track for karts.

My dad actually raced dirt Karts for years. Used to be a pretty solid scene here in Indiana. He also got serious and raced Watkins Glen, mid Ohio, etc. until the tire costs started exploding.

I love the story, Art! Thank you for giving us the details on the helmet and great shots of your Kart.
I had a Go-Karting career, 20 years ago with a similar helmet. LOL

I know this has gone off tangent from the Chaparral
But that is great!
I can almost hear Paul Page doing an intro to the racing over the music as well.

I LOVE the video Calvin! Quattro: In the USA, horse racing tracks were the first ones used by auto racers…we Americans are super competitive and a little crazy… and how about an Indy 500 roadster on a dirt track? Johnny Boyd, on the outside of row 1 in a roadster on dirt at Phoenix(before it was paved)… My interpretation using Lance’s Sumar special… And another… A fun build: sorry for the quick, crappy photos…

Many years ago I found myself somewhere in Iowa (I think it was Iowa?)with nothing to do on a Saturday night. I went to a dirt track race where they had these modifieds with the huge wings bolted on top. What a blast, I wanted to climb in one of them. I think they were "Outlaws" cars but I'm not sure.
That's a beauty, nice job on the tires - real dirt?

A coupla decades back we had a great series on the box here called 'The power and the Glory'
Each show covered how racing began and evolved in Europe and the U.S.A.
The U.S. focus went from Fairgrounds and Horse racing tracks right through to the paved Indy. Might be on youtube.....
Took me back to that show. And how bleedin' kooky your lot were to put on a show.
The model is superb. The history lesson is great. Was telling two of the lads today about the karting on dirt. One thought I was pulling his leg!
Blindin'. Just Blindin'.

Also, always loved the roadsters on dirt. Very cool build. Also loved the occasional dirt champ cars on pavement. A la AJ at Milwaukee in his Meskowski

I had to go on google maps and look it up. Yeah, it was Iowa. Knoxville, just outside of Des Moines. It turned out to be a fun night, really friendly people too.
