I am getting ready to start building The Monogram 1/24th Scale Quaker State Porsche March #8 of Teo Fabi. Does anyone have any photos of this car or any photos of Teo's helmet. The kit just has open tub for cockpit. I have no photos or reference material for Indy car cockpits to add details such as a seat, etc.. so the next best option is to use driver figure and try to model Teo Fabi. Driver figure looks good but would like to paint helmet to reflect Teo's helmet. Kit insructions give no details or decals for helmet they just suggest overall white for the helmet.
Thanks, groundeffect06

Thanks Professor and Harvey the dog. Super information. This is my first Indy car build since I built Johnny Rutherford's Indy car back around 1977/78. So the hobby is brand new to me again. I will probably be asking many questions. Anyone out there interested in being a mentor? Thanks, groundeffect06

I know this would mean a lot of extra work, but I'm wondering if it might be possible to "cut down" the 1/24 scale decals to fit the 1/25 scale AMT March 88? Of the 2 kits (Monogram vs AMT), I think the AMT kit is a lot better. Just throwin this out to get some opinions to see if you guys think this is even doable.

I agree 100% about the AMT kits being better but I don't know if it would be worth trying to adapt the Monogram decals to fit. From what I've heard, the decal quality isn't good at all and from looking at my sheet, I would have to concur. It would be cool to see an AMT March built in that livery though. G

If I was in that direction I would find someone that can print decals on their computer, scan the logos from the Monogram kit and eliminate all the background green color and print new ones. I would paint all the green color.

Hi Guys, It's me again with more questions. What color should I paint the cockpit on a March 88? What kind of putty do you guys use to fill seams on plastic?
Thanks, groundeffect06

I used Tamiya Metallic Gray on this one but you can use any metallic color you want or even black. I use Evercoat Polyester Glazing Putty. It doesn't shrink over time like hobby puttys. G

What do you think about Model Master Steel Non-Buffing? The kit has no seat for the driver so I was thinking about using Detail Master Black flocking to simulate the seat. I am open for suggestions.

The interior of the tub around the seat would be unpainted carbon fiber panels with a semi-gloss look to the carbon. The seat was black and flocking it would be appropriate.

So, I take it there'd be interest if I did these decals in 1/25 scale?

Yes Sir. The Monogram kit decals are'nt all that great. If you are seriously considering doing a decal sheet for this car about how long does it take for research, development, production etc... From what I see of the decals I have gotten from you it would be worth waiting for that sheet, before using the Monogram kit decals. I can start working on Pancho Carter's 1989 Hardee's Lola and use the Indycals decals I got from you. Beautiful work ! I will be buying many more sheets from you. Thanks. groundeffect06

Does anyone know who distributes Evercoat polyester glazing putty or where I can buy it?

Most auto parts stores will carry either that putty or a product very much like it. Paint stores that carry auto paints will also have it.

Does anyone know who distributes Evercoat polyester glazing putty or where I can buy it? groundeffect06 NAPA has a *house* brand that IS the exact same polyester glazing putty if you have a NAPA store nearby. For small areas I use Nitrostan red putty, also called *red lead*. it is a spot putty and made for automotive applications. It doesn't have the shrinking problems that hobby puttys have. Bondo makes small tubes of basically the same product and can be found at Wal Mart in their automotive section. Mongo

I have a bunch of projects lined up before I can get to that, but I think it's safe to say I could have it by year's end. I really don't like to talk about upcoming projects or timetables, because plans can change and it depends on how busy I am - new artwork can only be done during down time, which I have very little of. I'd thought of doing this sheet for a couple of years and perhaps this thread is the motivation I need to elevate it to production status. Plus after 20 years, I've never built an AMT 88 March - I think it's about time to do one.

What do you guys use or recommend to make the shoulder harness and lap belts out of?
Thanks, groundeffect06

Plain white craft ribbon in various widths. It can easily be colored with paint, marker, etc and gives some flexibility ;D Plus a little spool of it will last a REALLY long time

I have craft ribbon in all the main colors of belts, but I've found it can be a little thick to thread thru some of the PE buckles. I use paper almost exclusively now. I look for a slightly rough textured paper a little heavier than copier paper, color it the same way(s) that Jordan mentioned for the ribbon. It's easy to cut, shape & glue. I actually use the paper headers that many resin casters & decal makers use when they package their parts! Can't get any cheaper than that!

Detail Master makes a decent photoetched harness set. I like Studio 27's set as well. It came with a couple of sets of 1/24th hardware and 1 set of 1/20th hardware, 3 different colors of belt material and some manufacturer logos. Studio 27 belts with Detail Master hardware. G

Yes, the Studio 27 belt set is excellent to get for the markings (and their belt pieces aren't bad either ;D )

I live in a really small town. No hobby shops anywhere close. Where do you think I might could find Studio 27 products. Whenever I need something I always end up having to try to find somewhere that I can order it through the mail.

Hi groundeffect06, As I am just finishing the same kit I thought it might be useful to share my experiences with you. First the green colour - I mixed paint decanted from 2 Tamiya spraycans to get a green which matched the decals reasonably well. The mix was 2 parts TS43 Racing Green to 1 part TS9 British Racing Green. The kit decals are fairly poor as you know but they also do not fit very well. I had to cut the brown stripes into many smaller sections to fit them around the curves. Worst of all though, the white decals are not sufficiently dense in white colour and they look quite grey over the green paint. Unfortunately I made a blunder with placement of the top Quaker State decal on the wing (road course version) so I would welcome the opportunity to replace that with an aftermarket item if such a set is produced. There is one other obvious problem with the kit, the 2 access holes in the top of the rear body piece do not line up with the interior fuel/oil caps they are supposed to. I filled these holes and relocated them a few mm further forward. I also chose to seat the driver in the tub due to the lack of any seat detail. Wish I had seen those photos of the correct helmet colour first though. I will post a photo of my build, warts and all, in the next few days after I have finished. At least it may help you with what not to do !! Ken

Hi Kenh,
I can't wait until you post your pics so I can see it. Mine is coming along slowly. I am an Owner Operator/Contractor and have been on the road for the last 3 weeks so I have accomplished nothing on it. I would like to post pictures of the build as it progresses if I could figure out how and where to post the pics. Thanks for the info on the mods that need to be done.
