The film is out soon. Looking forward to that and hope they do not go too far from the truth on it.
The cool thing about this forum is the ideas it sparks off. Look at the Hobbietime 330 P4 Spyder conversion. Love Spyder/roadser versions. Look at the Indycals Ford GT40 and the thread on Ken Miles and 1966. Look at the thread about trying to do curved windscreens from flat plastic. I resolved to have a go at the Sebring Roadster after the family got me a couple of Fujimi MKII kits for me birthday.
Got so far but I ain't entirely happy.
Nightmare taking flat clear plastic and making it curved at one end and strait at the other. And the frame is way too thick. And not curved enough at the side/top. And about 3mm too tall. Like an idiot I looked at the Exoto and Spark models for ref instead of ref of the real car which I found later. Rookie error.
Went through all kinds of permutations on how to do it. Get a monogram roadster kit. But it would be criminal to transpose the screen onto this and destroy a rare model. Use a clear slot body and just chop out the screen and side windows as one and paint on the frame. Nah. Too wide. And no one does GT40 bodies in 25th or 28th. Slot cars too small. Just went and did it as best I could meself.
Guess there is only one way to do it right and I do not have the first clue. Vac form. Do the side windows, frame, windscreen and maybe even the bodywork lip that joins up to the bonnet in one piece in clear plastic.
Maybe one day someone will do it. By then the Fujimi kits might be hard to find. This will have to do til then. Too chicken to tear it all off and start again after the fight I had to get it all on. Lots of extras to fashion before I finish it. Oddly pleased given that was not an easy thing to put together but just wish I had looked up correct reference material and made it more accurate.

While the front and engine covers were the same the doors and windshield were quite a bit different' the windshield was taller and a bit longer and the cut out ramps for the hip scoops were quite a bit longer. A little help from Calvin would be appreciated. I'll see if I can flag him down. 20 years ago I did a deep dive into the available reference for the X-1 and came up with this;

A good effort quattro. There were a lot of detail changes for that car. The open top caused turbulence so a taller rear spoiler with braces was added.
Your comment "Maybe one day someone will do it" triggered my post when I thought of Calvin's recent sports car efforts.
A vacform windscreen and resin door inserts would be right up his alley.

Cor.
That's nice!
The extras as I can figure it. The braces from the rear spoiler onto the rear bodywork. Braces from inside the door panels to the top/front of the side windows and a few extra kinda tear drop bump bits in chrome/silver on the side of the car here and there.
Saw the 'white phone' post. I know 'the machine' is pouring his passion into a long list of projects already. But who knows. Off the back of this film. Might be more than a couple of sales in it. Wonder if they touch on that Sebring win. I ill find out next Wednesday......

I've talked about this subject in the past with other modelers and its something I'd seriously look into doing. I'd have to practice doing thicker and bigger vac form windscreens.

LOL. I decided to take a picture of the current view of the X1 conversion. Its at that point where it looks hopeless but I guarantee the next update picture I do, everyone will get very excited. Its a VERY confusing car, especially the windshield area. This has turned into a WAY bigger project than anticipated. I think most people would assume its just a door change and a new windscreen, but that is not the case what so ever. If you study the pictures closely, you will realize the windshield is narrower than the regular GT-40. The door window is angled from the outside and tapers into the inside of the door connecting the edge of the windshield. Then to add on top of everyhting I have to design it that I can cast these parts for it and design them in a way to make sure they will fit over the chassis. Im currently doing a "rough draft" just so I can see whats going on. I think Im going to have to make a new dash because I've had to grind the kit dash all up and its already too short in the front. LOL Its very hard to explain.

After taking a picture and looking at the pictures I've already discovered some of my issues. LOL Im glad, Im using a brass piece for the windshield frame because I can take it off and reshape it, over and over....so I can visualize it better.

Bin out of it for a bit dealing with family issues but just sat down to marvel at this.
Looking great. Brass. Never thought of that.
On my one I managed to keep the bits for the doors but dug an angle on them at the front to rest the lip from screen to bonnet. Yup. Grind down the dash unit to fit under that lip. Took some plasticard to create the curved panels on the rear of the cockpit flank areas with the holes in above the doors to back the back of the side windows against something. Also laid a curved piece along the tops of the doors to give the screen something to back onto, even if its only a mil thick. Hoping the black frame will hide the difference height.
I do keep wondering if I should have taken a Ford GT40 1/32 slot window for it but think it was just not wide enough. I will look at that a bit closer when I next order slot car bitz.
Dunno how to create those little aero bumps on the sides but I will find something.
Interesting amount of visual ref out there also shows different deco on the car and use of black tape here and there. Obviously this happens in endure events (bit like you can do all sorts with the 66 Daytona winner and its taped on bitz).
This is looking rather splendid though.

To show the difference between the X1 and the regular GT-40 I photoshopped a ghost image of Gurney's GT40 over the X1 at approximately the same size and you can see how much bigger the regular GT-40 windshield is to the X1 Also, there was a diecast made of the X1 but the windscreen is too narrow to the extreme. even the art on the cover of the 1967 program depicts the X1 with a full-size regular GT40 windshield - it just proves how most everyone thinks its just a basic chopped top

It's amazing how it was so much more than just chopping the top off.

It's amazing how it was so much more than just chopping the top off. Yeah, I think everyone was assuming it was just chopping off the top....including me! LOL I remember first saying, "I think I can actually use the kit windscreen and use a template to modify it" LOL Oh MY GOSH! LOL Im currently laughing at myself for saying that! But as I started to look at the pictures more and more....I start to think....Oh my......oh no..... it took my eyes a long time to understand the shape of the windshield and honestly, I dont think almost no one really sees the difference right away... Im determined that this kit will be THE most accurate when it comes to that windshield.

Now look at this shot. This shows how the door window bends dramatically in the center or the door. It does NOT just tapper into the windshield with a straight piece of glass.

Is that Peter Revson’s helmet? Wonder why he was driving this? He finished 3rd in a Ford GT 40 MK I entered by Essex Wire...he wasn’t on Shelby or Holman Moody teams...anybody know??? Tim

I dont use google ( i use duck duck go) and i couldn't find the helmet. Found one sorta similar. It had " wings" but the base was red. Perhaps someone else has knowledge on it. Nice work Calvin. Your car is unique, as i dont recall seeing this version. If i have, i just dont remember it. The brass idea was brilliant. I like how you follow every detail. Thats fun stuff.

Calvin: Thanks! At this time in auto racing most drivers had the same helmet for years (Stewart tartan, Clark dark blue with white bill, Surtees white w/ blue stripes, etc.) Ruby seemed to never wear the same one year to year...his helmet at Indy in 1969 looked like velour! Tim

Its getting closer and closer! I got my first TEST clear windshield done. It came out better than expected. My first time vac-u-forming thicker 0.015" clear plastic. I need to do some adjustments with the vacuuming and the windscreen shape itself. I need to adjust the doors and work more with the windshield posts since I know the location should be close... I got to the point in the build where it's now hopeful. Its taking shape.

LOL. and since I posted these latest pictures I completely re-did the windshield buck. After seeing the clear windshield on I was able to see what I was doing and I now understand the angles better. I also need to move back the side pillars. Next update will be even better. LOL One of these days I'll finally have the shape of the windshield correct. I hope you are enjoying the "live" transparent WIP I'm doing. Mistakes and questions in all!

Thanks, Paul.... As you can probably tell I was able to push through that threshold of not being accurate, to within acceptable levels of accuracy. I felt like I was chasing my tail, but I didn't get too down about it as I knew it was a challenge. My next challenge is to figure out how to make the area around the windshield builder friendly. I not only have to think about building it but also keep in mind how Im going to make it builder-friendly for everyone else, then explain to everyone how to pull off this tricky conversion.
