Thanks for the link. I was hoping IMS would do this although I think $9.99 is a bit steep. I like the cover art though.

1968 is now available, with 1972 up next. Looks like they're doing election years first.
Can we make this post a sticky and update it as new broadcasts are made available?

That's disappointing. Any way to contact IMS to get the recording fixed? I would think there would be someone we could talk to there.

Jordan I posted the same thing on Trackforum and IMSonline replied "MichaelP -- You are correct. It appears there are 3 tracks missing from the 1972 broadcast. Once we get the missing tracks, I will send out an email to everybody who purchased the 72 race so they can download it again. Sorry about the mishap."

Ugh... looks like they've stalled. 2008 has been 'coming soon' for weeks. Which sucks because based on their pattern, 1961 would be up next... then 65, 69, 73 and 77. I suspect there's been less demand for more recent races and they've lost motivation. (I haven't bought any since 1980)

You would think by this day in age, that they would be available on DVD. Since at least 1971, most of the Indy 500 races were broadcast on TV. Some were delayed on same day viewing, but you know they have the race. I have been fortunate to have some of the races on video and enjoy taking one every now and then and watching one. It's great because I can watch a 3 plus hour race in about 2 hours by cutting out all the commercials. However, even VCR format is getting hard to come by. I certainly get a kick out watching Sir Jackie Stewart and Jim McKay. I can only imagine what kind of stash ABC must have, and those tapes are just sitting there rotting away.

I sure hope they realize that people aren't going to spend money on something that happen a few years ago, that most have recorded on dvd or vhs. Its the 50's to 80's is what most people want to see. Radio Broadcast are great but.... Having complete original abc broadcast dvd's would be the best thing since sliced bread and people would be willing to pay for them. I dont need to explain more... the proof is at www.trackforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129163

It seems we are not the only ones asking that question? Hopefully someone in the near future will hear our cries! It's going to take someone at ABC to go down into their vaults and pull out those old tapes and go through them. Jim

Im 80% sure IMS has every abc race in there hands, besides they used many clips in there legacy dvds of the 60's,70's 80,& 90's which are great! There indy 500 highlight films are good, but having the clearer picture of an abc original broadcast would be leading the way in enjoyment of reliving the race.
The 1965-1969 abc broadcast were basically highlight Films no more than 30mins long
1970 was when the used the higher resolution camera's but still the race was highlighted down to little less than an hr.
1971-1979 was 2hr same day cov.
1980-1985 was 3hr same day cov.
1986 on was of course live flag to flag
Nascar has there greatest race dvd's Which I heard they'er doing good with it. I heard football has greatest games dvd's too.
Why not Indy? 100 years is coming fast what a great gift idea for the history celebration it would be!

Well...
This is an idea I had years ago. I started to collect Indy 500 Radio Broadcasts on tape years ago. I have a cop-y of high-lites from 1947, the entire race from 1963, 64, 65,66,68 and I have several on MP3 files as well. I am always looking for the old ABC Broadcasts as well. Anyone with a copy of 1977?
Best to you!

Russ,
I have a copy of the 1977 race. The sad thing is, is that it is such a poor quality that it is not worth watching. I would hesitate to even try to copy it. If it were better quality I would just make a copy for you and send it to you. Watching it, it is very grainy and has a black and white quality to it. It's probably been copied one to many times. I have 95% of the 1971 race and then from 77 onward. However, 77 to 82 are very bad quality as stated. I purchased these off of Ebay a few years ago.
I would be interested in any 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s full races if they are of DVD quality. I am certain that these races exist from at least 1971 onward, in full, and are out there in good quality in someone's archives. It's just getting to them and marketing them properly(ie. IMS). I believe the evidence to this is that I was able to get copies of some of these races.
I am also searching for the 2009 race from this year. I missed the race due to my daughter's passing on May 21st of this year. Needless to say the 500 was not even a thought at that time. That's why I had not posted for many months. I am just getting back into modeling trying to get life back together.

Jim, send me a PM with your address. I still have the 2009 race on my dvr and just need to transfer it to DVD. I know I owe Jordan a copy. If anyone wants one send me your address. I think mail and material costs are around $5. Oh, one caveat; my dvr has little 3 second sound skips that can be annoying but the video quality is really good and there are chapter breaks every 5 minutes. Gregg

I might pick up a few of these Indy broadcasts but I have to admit that I balk at the price. Off iTunes, I bought highlighted Indy 500 coverage (70-95 minutes) of 5 races for $7.99 early this year and then added the '09 race for $1.99 this summer. The IndyCar radio broadcasts from this season and a few seasons past are free on iTunes.
I grew up watching the Indy 500 on TV, so, paying $9.99 for a digital only copy of a radio broadcast seems a bit overpriced. In the end, I'll probably breakdown and buy Mears's four wins plus the four races I have attended. At the $9.99 price point, the Speedway is making a killing on these IMHO - would be nice for a Black Friday sale or something on these ;D

As Jordan alluded to, there is a shortened 2009 on iTunes for $1.99 as well as 2006, 1992, 1985 and 1982

Right now iTunes offers the 1982, 1985, 1992, 2006, and 2009 Indy 500s - they are $1.99 each or pay $7.99 for the "Season Pass" which gets you all five videos. When they added the 2009 race, they apparently cut the 2007 race from their lineup but I have all six that I have known them to offer. I don't know if any other races were previously offered!?
To put this into perspective, NASCAR puts out 15-25 minutes videos of each race which is similarly just a shortened, repackaging of the TV coverage for $1.99 each so getting 90ish minutes per Indy 500 for the same per race price seems like a solid value to me (just my two cents).
I'm still excited about the radio broadcasts - maybe I can pick up a few around Christmas!

Regarding the radio broadcasts, I wouldn't hold your breath for more offerings anytime soon - apparently the IMS Online staff, who was doing the broadcasts, have been let go :-(

I’m new to the smart phone and I tunes thing. I’m getting ready to take a long trip and it would be nice to listen to some old or new races during the trip. I’ve seen the ones on MRN and I though I’ve seen on Indycar.com that you can down load some races for free. I’ve also seen the thread were you can buy older indy 500’s. I have a few questions that maybe you can help me with.
Are you down loading them using I tunes and if so can you listen to them without using your data? I have a I phone and I pod which would be better to load the races on due to the length.
Thanks for your help.
