I’ve been building ships for the past 18 months (thanks BobbyC), but I’ve wanted to build a 1966 Gerhardt for several years. I always thought it was a cool looking car and at least a dozen were built with Ford, "normal" Offy, Turbo-Offy, and Supercharged Offy engines. The chassis cost $15,000. A lot of drivers drove these at one time or another, including Hurtubise, Kenyon, Snider, ,Branson, Bobby Unser, Johncock, McCluskey, and Ward. I will be building this using Juango’ Mas’ scrathbuilding techniques. Juango also laid out the bulkhead placement and shapes for me. Thanks for all the help Juango. I have finished the basic inners and am skinning it right now. kip

This will be a fun WIP.
Someday I'm going to use the Juango’ Mas’ scrathbuilding technique too! Because you can't argue with successful looking models!

Hi Kip This looks good. My question is where did you find the drawings and can any of us get them. Was the photo of the Super in your Avatar taken at Oswego NY. Seen a bunch of good races at that place. If you haven't been there it's a large and very fast 5/8 mile. I don't know what the setup is know ,but in the 70s there was a low inside wall and a high steel plate outside wall. Starting 40 cars in their classic on Labor day week end the sound was unreal. We took the car I worked on out there once. We didn't have the car or the budget to run with those guys. Ralph

Hi Kip Sorry I added a note to Gary on my post to you. I'm getting old and I think I inhaled to much Methanol exhaust when I was young, but I would not change a thing about those days. Ralph

Thanks to Ralph, Gary D, Calvin, Gary S , and Paul for the kind words.
Ralph. The drawings I use were made by Bob Clindinst. The one I am using was incomplete. Usually they have much much more detail. A list of Bob's drawings is on this forum and some of them are available from Walt Shaub (Old Photos). The red marks on the Gerhardt drawing were added by Juango Mas to show me the shape and placement of the bulkheads and supports.

Hi kip
Thanks for the Clindist info. I'll contact Walt. I must have overlooked that on my printout of the drawings.
Now I have to put something straight and this is to to Michael Chriss. Where did MENTHOL come from. If you ever worked on Super modified's or Indy cars you would know what I mean by Methanol also known as Fuel or Alcohol you know that stuff that makes the cars go fast and that you cannot see burn during the day. The fumes burn the eyes and there is no other smell like it. If you want to see what I mean by unseen fire , look at the picture of Parnelli Jones bailing out of his car when it caught fire. You can see the heat distortion but not the fire. It's why you will see drivers and pit crew sometimes rolling around on the ground after a crash or a pit incident. They are trying to put out a fire . Water will also put out an Alcohol fire.
Kip sorry about that last paragraph , but as I said last night I am old and I get annoyed when someone changes the meaning of what I wrote or said.

Ralph. You are correct. I checked and the Gerhardt is not on the Clindinst list. I don't know where it came from. It looks like a Clindinst. If you (or anyone else) want a copy, let me know.

I have most of the plastic strips on and have started plastering it with Tamiya White Putty. Looks like crap but after much sanding, more putty, and much more sanding it will hopefully look like a 1966 Gerhardt. I have not yet decided what to do with the rear. Curbside or open it up and install a turbo Offy and an engine cover? kip

Kip, Sure like what we have seen so far. Fred Gerhardt built some durable and raceable cars in the mid-1960s. They ran well, usually in the top 10. I do not know if a Ford engine was ever run in this chassis. Good luck and keep us posted. Jim

Apparently several Gerhardts ran with Ford engines. Greg Walther and Bob Wilke reportedly had several. Drivers included Carl Williams, Branson, Bobby Unser and Tinglested. I also found that several Gerhardts had Chevy engines. Drivers included Bruce Walkup and Don Brown.

Kip, it is amazing to have seen this from the beginning because this honestly looks like a nice resin body you would get off of one of our great resin guys here. Fantastic work!
What's next on the punch list?

Wow. I am impressed. From nothing comes this beautiful work of art. This board has THE most impressive talent. The talent here is absolutely THRU THE ROOF. Just amazing talent. World class craftsmen that are a cut above.
Truely amazing talent. Take a hair pin, a bra and a car battery and these guys will hand you a museum quality piece.
Wow. Very well done kip!!

Well, Kip, you have done it again. This is truly amazing! Thanks so much for doing this and bringing us along for the ride. Do you plan to make any molds of this? I know you tried to do some things with Gary Doucette. Maybe Calvin or Kevin could help. Just a thought since some of us really like this period of Indy cars. Jim

Thanks for all the kind comments. I have cut in the panel lines and put in some cockpit sidewalls. Suspension fitting is next. Photos coming soon.
Jim, I don't know how to make molds. If someone wanted to do that I would work with them. I don't know if this body is strong enough to be used to make a mold. (The bodies I sent to Gary were resin.) I guess if I knew how to make a mold I would know if this body is strong enough.
