I’ve been scratching my head over something so I thought I would admit my ignorance and ask for help. I’m researching the Offy’s used in the early M-16 McLarens and I’ve run into a part that I’m unsure of. I first noticed it when I got my first printed engine from Indycals. Then I noticed in a subsequent purchase of a resin version that it was not there. When I got Kevin’s M-16C kit the other day I notice that he has a similar part that attaches to his engine. At times in my search I’ve seen this “pipe” go from the head to a tank as shown in this photo that I just found on Facebook. I’m sorry that I can’t credit the photographer. At other times the pipe seems to just end as depicted on Michael’s printed engine, like it’s functioning as a vent. Can someone please educated me as to what this is and what is its function? It won’t matter as far as my early M-16’s go as the engine covers will not be removable, but I’d still like to know if this part was installed. Paul Erlendson

Water/coolant. Notice the radiator cap on the tank just above it.

As Michael has correctly indicated, that item is part of the cooling system. Specifically, it is the hot coolant “out”. I have often wondered if the community would be interested in Engine Detailing Profiles for vintage Indy Engines to assist with detailing.l Cheers
