Can't think what else to call them. And I presume that is what they are.
Chaps. Have scoured the forum before throwing this in but cannot find anything.
I was thinking ahead to about a couple of builds of cars from 85 to 90 in 25th scale. Not the norm for me, this scale, but that's what you get looking at all the lovely stuff on this forum. Anyroad.
Noticed on a number of pics of cars with these 'pods' on the right of the roll hoops at helmet level. Cross referenced with the vids on the forum and there are the on track shots from those cars.
Its only one little thing but would anyone do these as accessories or after sales bits.
I know. You are all gonna say just make your own.......

Hey Fellas.
Took my own advise and just fashioned my own. Odd pod on the side of the Sullivan Indy 500 86C from 1986.
Watched the video. Looked at what pics I could find and got going.
My first ever 1/25th build.
Do a couple of these to build up the bottle to have a go at Calvin's PC18 transkit.
Did it out of plasicard. Ariel on the top is a bit thicker than I wanted but could not find any of the boy's Warhammer Imperial Guard Vox caster bits. Bet the birthday boy at Indycals was wondering why I ordered Miller decals at 1.64. Need one for the pod. I will post more later if all goes well.

Pulled a late one on this.
Sure there are better things to do on a Good Friday.
Nah there ain't!
The gold 'trim line' is exactly that. But.
I know this started out as a thread about me looking for camera pods but when I saw Calvin's comments on Michael's birthday thread I thought this is gonna be my hat tip to him by the time I have finished. Could not have conceived of this sort of thing without his vision and his work. I realised the March 86c has so much less body mass compared to the 85c. Therefore I would likely need Miller sheets at various scales. And I am grateful that Indycals does this. Ordered them at 25th, 32nd, 43rd and 64th. He probably wondered why all the different scales. But in the layout out for the next step I have gone to all the sheets for relevant elements. I think I could have even done with one at 18th! Explain later.
In the words of the team manager at the end of the film 'Le Mans'..... 'Thank you Michael'.

Blimey!
Sure you chaps have put together loads of these down the years.
But does everybody have trouble getting everything to fit once the cockpit goes in?
Fettle sand fettle re-spray. I am about 1mm out on matching the rear bodywork to the front. Must have done something wrong somewhere.
Always intended as a, think the term is, kerbside, model to mount in an Ikea picture box near vertically. Noticed the 86c parts that were on offer but think that would have been wasted on me on this build.
Gonna go strait into doing the 1987 Miller 86C job from the Indy 500 so learning allot from doing this one.
Doing custom number on the rear wing end plates at the mo......

Eerrrr.
Where did all the gearbox and rear spring detail go on these?
Guess this is something you chaps would have looked at and thought about, and probably commented to AMT about, what, 35 years ago?
When you were all young and starting out of course!
I have all this lovely engine detail hidden under the rear body cover and then a simple block outta the back.
In my naivety I thought the gubbings was all covered over for aero efficiency or something.
Then I looked at the pictures.....
No Springs. No bar. No wiring. No brake ducts. I am not going to go all 1/43rd snob here, and I don't tend to go all engineering crazy, but I slapped a couple of springs on my recent 43rd 86c build thinking everything was out in the open for road courses. What a rookie!
Bit late for the Indycals/Shapeways gearbox....... Got two to do so need a consistent level of basic detail for both.
OK Robin. To the Batcave bits box!

IndyCals did a nice 86C update set but those are OOP at the moment. I hope he brings them back, I would get another 1 or 2.

Fellas
I am sorry but my Photobucket wotnot is messing me about a bit. Admittedly loaded massive megabitage pics before without realising.
Went in to resize and upload again but its just not letting me upload the new ones....
Or upload the latest shot.....

There are other options for photo hosting. Imgur is a popular one.

Eureka! Photbucket is being a nightmare at the mo.....
Anyway.
The wheels are not fixed on yet. Just waiting for certain items to arrive......
The decals.
1/64th on camera pod.
1.43rd on front of nose and rear wing end plate. Also roll hoop on pit side and front wing end plate.
1/32nd on front wings, front of side pod, driver name and nose.
The rest is either 1/25th or done by me.
The Goodyear above the Pennzoil should be about 3mm wider, hence maybe a 1/18th. Nothing in my spares box.
Mate suggested that maybe Indycals should just do the 86 and 87 cars. Why should they be done? Sully spun and won in 85 and did nothing else there apart from blow up, break or crash. Its only me that wants to expand on my collection.
One big (little) error. Wife asked if it was the 85 car. I asked why she thought that. The USAC sanctioning decals. I slapped on the 85 version and it can be seen as such although I honestly cannot see that detail.
Were they different colours or designs for every year apart from the rear numerals themselves?
Gaffe in France do Paris Dakar models but they do create stand alone event specific decals for every year of the event. Maybe indycals could do the same? Small sheets, 2 bucks a pop? He is gonna love me!
Be ordering the 86 Pennzoil decals to do this and the 86 Meadowlands winner........
Detail on the gearbox.
Wish I had done it all before mounting the rear end. Be better next time. Various items. Springs from ballpoint pens. Fibre optic. Eraser. Plasticard. Its OK but wish I had better visual reference. Are there differences between a Cosworth box and a Chevy box?
Trying to make out what the dark strip from the cockpit surround to the windscreen is before fitting that lot on. Angled deflector?
Wheels. Question if I may.
The inside rims of these chrome wheels are quite thick and make the thing look toy like. Look dark in pictures. Thin rim in reality or do I just slap some black or dark silver in there to tone them back?
Am way better prepared for my next effort. But am happy with this first 25th effort. Will post last image when its all completed and photobucket starts behaving.

Hey chaps.
Whilst I have the 86 car on the back burner for now I started the 87 version.
Only this time I started with the rear end.
I basically re did what I squeezed into the first one.
No excuses but working off a pretty lo res piece of ref and I am not mechanically minded. Don't really understand what I am looking at other than shapes and positioning.
To me getting it wrong means you may eventually find out how to get it right.
Might run some null oil in there to dull things down on the basic block but just trying to replicate in basic form what I can make out of what I see in the pic, a detail of the Cummins car.
Jordan mentioned the Indycals detail set which is a sound idea, but how many more of these kits are still available apart from in closely guarded staches up and down the country. Does AMT still knock em out? (oh, and I did actually sign up to Imgur in the middle of my photo melt down, then couldn't work out how to load from that! But Thanks.)
Given my eye sight I have finally ordered a magnifying head set. With a light! Ha! Dread to think about what I am going to find when I look closely at my recent creations.....

That's it. Full circle back to the camera pod and these odd little strips around the cowling.
Enjoyed this. You chaps have probably made hundreds of these over the years but new to me.
The type of plastic and what you can do with it in terms of chopping, filing or sanding it.
Decals always spot on and Oh Tamiya black rubber, where have you been all my life?
Grabbed some old PC6 kits cheap on evilbay over here as well as a couple of others. Sit on those for a bit.
I will go off and explore more after doing the 87 version 86c and PC17.
Then I will plunge into doing that PC18 transkit. And If get that right I might do some full on resin kits like the 82C. Even the 85c when it beams down again. And that Andretti Wildcat is just so sexy.
And must not forget that newly available Galmer in 43rd.
Anyone ever going to do a Lola T800? Or is it a simple conversion from the 83 Lola?
Done Rally raid and prototype resin at 43rd but this would be a whole different party.
My motivation for building was waning a bit end of last year. I had done all the Tambay I could do. All the Nilsson. All the Villeneuve Lot of 43rd Sullivan to finish but was getting bored with it. I was going to go back to slot cars. But given the material on here, the work, the ideas and the information, I have had my engine started again.
Cheers fellas.

It's easy to forget how clunky camera pods were then. Now so much smaller and lot less aero penalty.
