Today, I finished the Ferrari GTO 250 Lorenzo Bandini raced in the 1962 Nassau Tourist Trophy race. I used an Italeri/Testors kit with Vintage Racing Miniatures decals. The instructions stated the car was blu genziana, I used Tamiya Mica Blue to match the color as best I could. I’ve seen color photos of the car which depict a lighter shade of blue, but I went with the closest match to what the instructions said, so any errors regarding color are all on me! This is an older kit, but it’s well engineered and goes together pretty well. I added a Fujimi Borrani wheel/tire set to make it a little sharper looking than what the kit provided. The rear end of the car rides a little bit higher than it should, but I did some fiddling with it and got it to look closer to what came out of Maranello. It’s not letter perfect, but I think it looks great, in addition I get to add a Lorenzo Bandini car to my collection. Thank you for looking!

Great job Jerry! When I was doing the Penske version, I failed to use Bare Metal Foil on the windows. Your BMF is outstanding! Like a dummy, I was thinking “race car.” These cars are chrome hounds! Easy to forget it started life as a passenger car. I am working on a 1962 Jaguar XKE and won’t leave the BMF off this time. If anyone is wanting to build one of these, I have leftover decals to do this car. The VRM decals will do about 5 different versions... First thought about Bandini with the Monaco fire...the ABC coverage showed me how “serious” Auto Racing was...later I learned he was very good with several important victories, including LeMans, the Daytona 24 hour, and the Targa Florio...beloved by Italians, approx. 100,000 showed up at his funeral.. Another great job Jerry! The Machine is back at it! Tim

Thank you all for the kind words! The blue on this car is part of what inspired me to build it, the other part being that Lorenzo Bandini drove it.
Tim, your Penske Ferrari inspired me to build this car, yours is an incredible car and I cannot wait to see the XKE. That’s the incredible thing about race cars of that era, most sports cars went from road to track looking essentially the same as they did on the showroom and stock cars had just started adding safety equipment and roll cages.
You’re exactly right on Bandini, his death is one of the most graphic things I’ve seen and it is sad that he’s remembered for that instead of being an excellent racer. Had Ferrari’s F1 cars consistently been more a patch on the Lotus, BRMs, and Coopers of that era, he may have won more races.
Craig, I’m glad you love the rail, when I move I think I’ll need to take a portion of it with me to carry on the tradition of photographing my cars on it!

Lorenzo Bandini was signed to drive in the 1967 Indy 500 in the Wally Weir car #32 a 1967 Gerhardt chassis with a DOCH Ford engine, Red an White checker board paint job, design by one of Wally's kids. The car was driven by Al Miller started 33rd and finished 28th dropping out with oil cooler failure on lap #74

Walt: OK, I give up...I have finally determined that you know more about the Indy 500 than Donald Davidson...I really appreciate your comments whenever a rare car, mechanic, or driver is posted...Lorenzo Bandini at Indy? Walt knows...Apache Airlines? Walt knows...62 M/T? Walt knows... Thanks for being on here my friend! Tim

Jerry: Glad to serve as inspiration! Countless times I have seen yours, and others builds, which inspire me...that’s one of the best things about this Board!...if you haven’t seen them, go on YouTube and find the old Bahamas races...it looks like everything from street cars to prototypes, and all points in between...racing a wide open road course with virtually no catch fencing...and stars from Indy, F1, USRRC, WEC, and even NASCAR!...
