I recently completed this replica of Dick Rathman’s 1952 Hudson Hornet. In the early years of NASCAR, the Hudson Hornet supplanted the Oldsmobile 88 as the car to have on track. Hudson, with its cars winning, saw a chance to market its cars and provided full factory support to drivers of their cars. The big, low slung machines proved ideal for the rutted, dirt short tracks which dominated the series schedule. NASCAR proved a happy Hudson hunting ground between 1951-1953. The marque won many races and carried their drivers to the championship each of those seasons. Dick Rathman won five races a piece in 1952 and 1953, winning at a variety of tough tracks such as Langhorne and Darlington (not the Southern 500). His success in stock cars propelled him to the top of the sport, he moved to AAA/USAC and started several Indianapolis 500s, though never attaining the success of his brother Jim. I built this from the Moebius Hudson Hornet kit, with Powerslide Decals, and painted Tamiya Black and Racing White. I painted the headlights radome tan to simulate masking tape.

The black is smooth, the decals pop, and the details are nicely done. Great job on this one, Jerry.

Great job, Jerry! Back in the day when "stock cars" were mostly "stock". I can't remember all the story, but as I recall, Jim was actually Dick, and Dick was actually Jim. Something about their ages. Interesting story that I'm somebody knows.

Dick Rathmann was born James Rathmann, in 1946 his younger brother wanted to enter a race but he was only 16 years old so he used his brothers Name James (Jim) and started racing and stayed with the name Jim, and when his older brother started racing he used the name Dick , and that's the way the name stated the rest of there life. Are you confused yet, Jim was Dick and Dick was Jim
