Just curious. Having a discussion about the 1970 and 1971 Indy winning Colts. Were the '70 and '71 two different cars or was the 1970 winner reworked for the 1971 race? Regards, H.W.

In response, I have a little story about that:
In 2012 I was at the IMS Museum for the first time. I was there with my cousins, both racing nuts as well. We were looking at TWO Colts, the 70 & 71 winners. I said softly to my cousin that they had the description cards wrong - they had the cars mixed up. He couldn't tell the difference, other than the numbers. I'm not one to try and draw attention to myself, so I was embarrassed when he went and told a docent what I said. The docent came over, agreed and switched the cards. He said he was glad I caught that, as otherwise he wouldn't have been able to sleep that night. I think he may have been a bit sarcastic.
Point being: unless one was a replica (or both!) they were different cars. :-) MJ

Great story. I am inclined to agree with you. I have already built the 1970 car and it sits proudly in my Indy car collection. The next row of cars will start with the 1971 car which I an currently trying to scratch build. Any ideas from anyone about the color for the '71 car? I know that it was a darker color of blue and someone said that it looked semi-transparent. I thought maybe a dark blue with a thin overcoat of Tamiya transparent blue. Anyone have thoughts on this? H.W.

While I recommend clear blue over TS44 for the 70 winner, I personally don't think there was any transparency to the 71 car. I have seen a 'fresh off the track' nose from a 1971 car (not from Indy) and it was almost black, but I don't believe it was that dark at Indy. I think TS15 is too light, TS55 is too dark. I don't think there is a Tamiya straight out of the can I would use.

I agree that the cars were not Transparent (Kandy Kolors) I have seen both cars many times and they were solid colors.
If I were doing the build I would start with Penske Blue(Indy and Tran-Am)and tint from there.
Those colors are pretty close!

These seem to be a very popular cars. I don't know if Rick Faeth has any plans to release his version, I know he's busy running a race track. I'd love to see someone do a kit of either one or both of these cars. (Like I need another kit)

(Like I need another kit) John Lol.😂 Yes you do! Everyone needs another kit! Especially resin kits, which are proven, time and time again, to have a huge return on investment. Better than gold!

Really? I guess I will call my broker, and rethink any stocks, Resin is better than Amazon I guess. Who knew. You just may need a better exhaust fan, Calvin.
