Today I finished my replica of David Hobbs’ Carling McLaren M16D he raced in the 1974 Indianapolis 500. David Hobbs drove just about everything in his long and storied career, including four starts in the Indianapolis 500. In 1974 he had his best performance at the Speedway, starting ninth and finishing fifth as a teammate to winner Johnny Rutherford in a McLaren M16D. Hobbs in his recent autobiography (a must read, btw) claims the McLaren was “a beautiful car to drive.” He said he ran into some oversteer in the race, came into the pits to fix it during a green flag period instead of soldiering on to a caution. He stated it cost him a lap and a few possibly a few positions at the end of the race. His sponsor, Carling Black Label Beer became heavily involved in racing during the early 1970s, sponsoring not only his Indianapolis efforts, but sports cars, and NASCAR as well. This is Michael’s recent McLaren kit. It went together really well and I had a lot of fun building it. I painted it Tamiya black, with Indycals decals. I highly recommend this kit. If you don’t have one, get one, as it’s by far the best representation of this highly important car you’ll find in 1/25 scale. If you have the kit, build it, you’ll be amply rewarded with a stunner on the shelf. Thanks for looking!

Jerry: Us mere mortals always enjoy your builds...you already lifted “The Machine” title from Calvin; I also believe The Suddarth Museum of Auto Racing is closing in on The Parke Indycar Museum, as the go-to place for out of this world exhibits and models...dang! I gotta’ plan a Tour of Model Car Museums that includes you and Dan!
I read up on Hobbo’s stint with Penske’s Ferrari 512...everything in the car was set up for Donahue, so Hobbo had to adjust to what he had; mirror placement, chassis setup, interior setup, etc... so Hobbo just jumped in and made it work...not quite as quick, but damn close...you are correct: he could drive anything...
Again: great work! Tim

Wow! Beautiful work. That was always one of my favorite McLarens. Also a fan of Hobbs. BTW, his book is great read.

Great modeling on one of the best (imho) race car paint schemes ever.

That is a really good looking car. Great design, great kit, and very well built. I am glad this one did not go "ka-blamo" on him This is a good looking car in person, too, I am glad to see it at IMS in the vintage cars each year. Jordan

This is one of my favorite cars and drivers...you absolutely nailed this one. ...I'm always happy to see your post, as you not only build, but give us a history lesson.

...you already lifted “The Machine” title from Calvin; Lol.😂 I just fell out of my chair laughing.... The terrible thing is I put together more model kits now, than I did back in the olden days when I got branded with the "Machine" trademark, the only difference now, is I put together resin kits to sell....and don't have time to build person builds, because I'm always filling orders. I'd show, WIP's of myself filling orders, but that's kinda boring 😴

I have that very car on my build list also...Looking at your work here Jerry just makes me want to build even more. Great Job on a beautiful car. I don't have the Hobbs book as of yet but plan to get it. He's also one of my favorite drivers.
