Ok I think I’ve finally run out of Eagles!
Same deal as before. Bill Jorgensen resin bodies, kit parts and custom decals.
Eagle 7225 was sold to Roger Penske for Mark Donohue to drive as the #66 Sunoco DX car at the three 500 mile races in 1973. It was then driven by Gary Bettenhausen as the #5 Sunoco DX car in place of his usual McLaren M16C at Phoenix in November 1973 and again at Phoenix in March 1974. It was also driven by Mike Hiss at Michigan in 1974. For 1976, the car was sold to Bill Simpson and raced as his #38 Nikon car.
As the Simpsons Safety equipment business continued to grow the time was right to get out of the driver’s seat. At Ontario Bill put a young up-and-coming driver in the seat by the name of Rick Mears. The #38 car was now branded as the Simonz Waxing System Special. Rick finished 8th in his first Indy Car outing. The decals for this version are my own homemade.
In September that year it was sold to Arthur E. 'Art' Sugai (Ontario, OR) and became the #90 Eastside Café car for Rick Mears. Rick ran the final two races that year at Texas World Speedway and Phoenix finishing 9th both times. The decals for this one were produced by Mike Bugle.
For 1977 Sugai decided to focus only on the big tracks. Rick finished 24th at Ontario, DNQ at Phoenix, and 15th at Texas World Speedway. Ricks first attempt at Indy was 1977 and he DNQ. The decals for this one were produced by Mike Bugle.
Rick saw the writing on the wall for the small Sugi team and Moved to the better funded Theodore Racing Team for the remainder of 1977. Rick ran the remaining schedule in the McLaren M16 C/D for Theodore Racing finishing 30, 6, 7, 5, 26, and 8th good enough for 20th in points. This car also has Mike Bugle decal which Michael now produces.
In 1978 Roger Penske was looking for someone to run the races Mario Andretti couldn’t run due to his commitment to F1. Rick was that guy. As they say the rest is history.
