Ok this should be simple for you indy experts but here goes...
I recently got the last two 1/43 scale Formula Models 1973 STP Eagle kits that Ghost Models had..
Now comes the part that has been driving me crazy. The color of the of the car!
I have have heard anything from it being Florescent Red to Florescent Orange.. Or a mix of the two?
I'm planning on building both Johncock's and Savage's car.. What is the consensus on the color they should be..
Back in the day pictures of Johncock's and or Savage's car look have them looking orange and others looking red
Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks

Tamiya Spray Lacquer TS-36 over white primer is an excellent choice.

Have fun with those Formula Models Eagle kits. They build up really nice.

Fluorescent red. All Indy STP cars were fluorescent red except Bobby Unser's STP Novi (which was tomato red). Anyone who calls it fluorescent orange only does so because fluorescent red has an orange hue to it, but there is a BIG difference between fluorescent red and orange.
Also Mr. Hobby makes a very good fluorescent red available in flat or semi Gloss. - it is my new go-to STP red.

Where can you get it from? Is it acrylic or lacquer? Any idea if can be used as a base coat for 3 part polyurethane clear?

Hi Andy
I've used Tamiya white primer as the base coat first, then a two coats of Tamiya Italian Red TS-8. Last, I finished with 2 coats of Tamiya TS-36 Fluorescent Red on my Lotus 56. It's judgment call for the right STP color.

The March F1 cars - with one exception - were NOT dayglo. Mario drove an STP entered March in one race and it was dayglo red, but all the other STP Marches (not STP entered) were regular red.

That looks like an interesting possibility. I need to check into that! I have used Zero Paints, Tamiya , Gravity Colors and Scale Finishes paints in the past on other builds with good results. Thanks for the link!

Since I’m planning on painting the bodywork on my Lotus 56 before winter, I’d better jump into the conversation. I had planned on using Tamiya TS-36, but Michael you have intrigued me with you choice of Mr. Hobby. Are you using it in spray can? If so, where do you purchase it? My local hobby shop has carried their primer, but never colors. How are you decaling over it? Is the semi-gloss smooth enough to decal directly over? Do you clear coat after? In fact, I have these same questions about TS-36. Can you gloss coat it and have it look prototypical?

I think I"m done with TS36 - just way too erratic. No problem decaling the semi gloss and I will clear after.

TS-36 has the tendency to be inconsistent in either if its going to be dull red or actually flo red. We CANT figure out why this happens? Can gets old? Contamination? Mixed wrong? We always test it out before painting a model. It SHOULD be bright enough that it hurts your eyes.

I found this the other day as a possibility for dayglo red.. Its a Testor's Flat color that would need to be clear coated before decaling but the point is this the correct shade as it does burn your eyes! LOL! Has anyone tried this?

Andy, I've never used that color, but the "2" at the beginning of the FS number on that bottle indicates semi-gloss (1 = gloss, 2 = semi-gloss, and 3 = flat). I've used Model Master paints for many years (and I see in the background you do too ), so I know they're usually good. Be sure it's thoroughly mixed and it might give a nice soft gloss, You might not need to clear coat before decals, but do a spoon test first and then use your judgement on how it turned out for you. Please let us know how it turned out for you. Cameron

Yep. I put a couple of coats of gloss and polished it out. I used it for M@r1b0r0 colors on an MP4/2. Looks real good.
Not sure it's quite right for the STP though. Not enough dayglo.

Hi All, I recently used Model Master to salvage the finish on my Lola, after the Tamiya Fluorescent Red (over white primer) covered very poorly. The color was exactly the same as Tamiya and it dries in a semi-gloss finish. I've used it for years on the Day-Glo parts of my airplane models. If you prefer acrylic, you can get the same color in their Acryl line (although I'm not a fan of these paints), and Gunze makes a good one, too. When I get around to building another STP car, I'll use Mr Color C171, which is an acrylic lacquer, like Tamiya, so I can airbrush it. All of these work best over a white primer. I've also seen people spray it over a yellow base, to show wear/weathering. Cheers! Ben

I had never experienced the dreaded Tamiya TS-36 flop. Well here it is! Fresh can from my local hobby shop and you can see it is a very bright red but not the expected STP/Smokin Cowboy dayglo red as expected.

If I could help you ? I remenber , in 1970 ,Mario Andretti 's STP McNamara March 701 was "fire red" - "Dayglo red" - "hight vis red" ,(as you want) , was not "orange" , but truly "red" .
When F1 ,and all others cars ,with the "PM Rooftop", became "Fire red" (and not "fluorescent" red as many peoples say wrongly)(instead of Carmine red -RAL 3002) ,it was the same red ,and it was NATO equivalent of Federal standard 595B :FS 38905. But ,to apply this paint ,you need ,before ,to apply a flat white base , to apply 2 coats ( crossed) of (flat) Fire red ,and , IMPERATIVELY ,a polyurethane gloss coat to fixe it ,and , after ,...... only ,you applied the stickers . For modeling ,I think ,it is the same .
Project four /McLaren (Ron Dennis) seals the stickers in gloss coat , to have ...... no step at the sticker edges.

WOW!!! I actually worked with Clive Chapman on this going back 3-4 years, and as far as I know, that's some of my artwork on the car, but this is the first pic I've seen of the fully restored car apart from a back-view on Grand Tour a few months ago.
