I knew "some" racing fans were stupid, but that stupid?
Today on VS. Indy lead up shows, they had a show called, "The 10 Greatest Moments in 500 History." Of course, they let "the fans" vote. WHY!?!?!?!?....who are these morons?
Danica Patrick leading the race was voted the third best moment in 500 history? Danny Sullivan "spin and win" was voted the second? What BS is this? Of course....the oldest moment chosen was Meyer drinking milk in 1936, but that's it?!?! What about older moments? No mention of Big Al winning his 4th in a back up car......geesh! I am beginning to feel that the "ESPN Generation" that thinks if it isn't seen on ESPN, it never happened are nothing more than clueless fools. Most should read a book on the subject before voting. For what it's worth, here's my list
10. 1911 Ray Harroun Winning the 1st 500 9. 1937 Wilbur Shaw's first win by 2 seconds over Ralph Hepburn 8. Vukovich's two wins in 1953 & 54 7. 1936 Meyer drinking milk 6. Rathmann & Ward in 1959 & 60, possibly the best 500's ever! 5. 1961 Foyt & Sachs Duel 4. 1965 Clark winning in rear engine car for the first time 3. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Mears 4th wins 2. 1945 Wilbur Shaw gets Tony Hulman to by speedway 1. 1982 Johncock & Mears duel
Well. now it's someone else turn to call me a fool. but my list is better and more educated than on VS. today
Best to you
Russ

Each generations concept of history gets shorter. Not the best way to be but seems to be the trend. Just be glad YOU know about these great events from the past! I am!

Sadly, most so called fans have no clue. I am always amazed that so many people who paid big money to go to the 500, or any other race, have no idea what they are watching. The first 2 years we went to the USGP at Indy, we sat near people who said " why are they going the wrong way". These were $140.00 seats. At Indy many so called fans are so drunk by lap 150 all they want to do is sleep or throw up. I'm not even going to comment on Danica, I don't want to start another mess. I will be thinking of you Russ, at the show Sat. and the 500. Wish I could meet you. Craig

I knew it was going to be nothing but moments that just happen, most fans have no idea what went on before the mid 80's. I was surprised 1967 wasn't even on there?
But at least its something it was OK. B+ for a grade I just wish they would dig a little deeper in the history book and not show only the close Finnish races. Every race is a good race if its not rained out or to many dumb cations.
I'm looking forward to the Unser, Mears, and Foyt show tomorrow.
ESPN Classic is showing on Saturday....
Al Unser Biography 1987 Indy 500 1992 Indy 500 2005 Indy 500 2007 Indy 500 2008 Indy 500
I wished they would show some Indy's from 1965 - 1980 ABC Broadcast.

Some of the options that VS had kind of puzzled me. But I'm not going to hold them responsible for the way people voted. What I think should have happened was for VS to have only write-in votes for the top moments. That would probably cancel out the drunk and dumb votes.

For me, the #1 is Wilbur Shaw leading Tony Hulman to his purchase of the Speedway at the end of WWII. Without that, it's all over.

Very, very, true. This one event should have been a no-brainer. No Tony Hulman/Shaw connection, no modern day IRL.

I'd put my list together with the caveat that they were the events I actually witnessed and why they were great to me. Every 500 I have been to has some great memories and I've been to 33 of them. That certainly does not make me an expert nor a fool....only another fan with an opinion. What criteria do you use to create your list?
