...you will have noticed at tracks like Indianapolis that Penske started running long, thin panels under the rearview mirrors that had windows in them. These have been pretty widely copied in the paddock and now I noticed that Penske isn't running them anymore Strange!! I wonder what the initial benefit was and why they went away from them - just a little nuance that I enjoy in the pursuit of speed. Jordan

I remember reading a story on Karl Kinser and the writer stated....if Karl put a big 'ol turd on the hood by the next race everyone would have been running one. I laughed loudly. Remember Foyt covered up his inlets back in 75 or 76......head games!

I do know that sometime last year they instituted a new rule. Pick a mirror design and stick with it all season.
I do not know why they aren't used this year but last year they were a significant aero device. The supports were basically vertical fins that pointed inward toward the nose of the car. This had the effect of diverting air away from the rear wings and reducing downforce. Realistically they don't need the rear wings for downforce - in qualifying they are generally angled so far back that they generate lift!
