Is the Mclaren orange for the 1974 winner lighter than the 1976 winner car?
Every picture I look at the 76 car is always brighter than the 74 car?
anyone know?
Looking for a good Tamiya match.... mostly
I know that TS56 is the best from what I read on here, but for which year if they are different in color?

To the best of my knowledge they're the same. The differences in color could be from the photos being taken in different lighting conditions or with different film. I do know that back in the days before digital photography there would be dramatic differences in color between film types.

In 1974 I was 14. The McLaren Indy car was displayed at the local Ford (!) dealer (the owner, H. William Smith was President of McLaren Engines) after the Pocono 500 and I got my picture in the local paper standing next to it with Tyler Alexander. That car was YELLOW, or very nearly so. I've seen a milion pics of McLaren Can-Am cars over the years, & seen many restored Can-Am and F-1 cars and the '74 car was NOT McLaren orange. I used Testors #14 yellow over dark gray primer and that was very close to my pics of the '74 car taken in '74. I know this will open a can of worms, but I stand by my memory and pics.

In 74 Mclaren had two teams, and the sponsors were: M@r1b0r0 (Phillip Morris) and Yardley cosmetics, is very complicated history, i'm not sure why. The Yardley Mclaren were white and ORANGE, like the indy Mclaren official team.

There have been debates that there were two McLaren oranges, but I have never seen any evidence of this. For any Can Am McLaren or any any factory Indy effort, I would use Tamiya TS56 Brilliant Orange - it's a perfect match. Nor have I ever seen any indication that the 76 winner was a different color from the 74.

As usual, taking an open-minded approach to the exact shade of any color is best. For more than any sane person would want to know about McLaren Orange, check this out: forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=85480&hl=McLaren+orangeYou could also search The Nostalgia Forum for other mentions of McLaren Orange, but this was the best discussion. I have also saved 3 different formulae for McLaren Orange from other boards: McLaren M8 color question 5 parts orange (x6) to 2 parts yellow (x8). I Here some mixes that have proved to be right in the past (Tamiya paints) Orange: X6 + X8 (50/50). Overall Colour on F1/500 and CanAm cars from 1968 to 71 Blue: X3. Sometimes on spoilers and wings on Orange livery 2 parts X-6 orange to one part X-8 Lemon Yellow. It is one of those colours that always photographs and prints

I throw in my nickel(inflation). I have seen this debate many times over correct colors...here are some of the issues. I can paint a car with same paint as another builder and it will look completely different. Pain thickness, primer color, batch numbrs, etc. all can lead to variations in the "same" color. Perhaps one of the biggest factors is the scale of the model. Our eyes see the color differently when painted on smaller objects as they do not refract as much light.Too compensate for this effect the model is often painted slightly lighter shade. Exact color is for model weenies.....fins a color that is close and looks right and build the model....what are you going to compare it to anyway....a restored car? a 30 year picture? even an original will have faded.

I was looking at the Hiroboy site a couple of weeks ago and saw that Zero has two shades of Mclaren Orange, one for early cars and the other for later F1 presentation/test F1 cars. I would be interested if anyone compared Zero Paints McLaren F1 Test Orange (ZP-1063) and McLaren Can-Am Orange (ZP-1109) to Tamiya TS- 56 Brilliant Orange? Is Brilliant Orange closer to one Zero paint than the other? www.hiroboy.com/catalog/Paul Erlendson
