Last night I finished Graham Hill’s Lotus 49 from the 1967 British Grand Prix. In 1967, Graham Chapman and Co unveiled their latest stroke of genius in the Lotus 49. It was one of the finest designs in the history of the sport. The Ford-Cosworth powered machine used the drivetrain as a stressed member of the car and while Chapman didn’t originate this idea, the 49’s success led other constructors to emulate the design. Along with a new car, Lotus had a new driver for 1967, pairing 1962 World Driving Champion, Graham Hill with Jim Clark. Hill went from being the number one man at BRM to being Jim Clark’s right hand man, but it never seemed to be a problem for Hill. Clark took all four of Lotus’ wins in 1967, as the temperamental car seemed to either win or retire. As a result, Clark finished third and Hill seventh in the driver’s standings and second to the Brabham team in the Constructor’s title. The 1967 British GP was indicative of the marque’s fortunes. Clark and Hill started one-two on the field and both led the race. Clark won, but Hill suffered suspension problems and engine problems, retiring after 64 laps. The next season, after Clark’s untimely death, Hill won his second WDC in a Lotus 49, fulfilling the car’s immense promise. This is the 1/20 scale Ebbro kit, built essentially box stock except for Michael’s brilliant decals. His decals are correct for the car as it actually raced and really make it stand out. Aside from the decals, the only thing I added to the kit were screens for the fuel injector stacks made by cutting on a reusable coffee filter. The kit mostly went together pretty easily, I had significant problems getting the transmission to fit right, but in the end it’s there correctly. I’d say it’s more a case of user error rather than a flaw in the kit’s design. All in all I really enjoyed the kit, it’s a fantastic addition to the collection. Thanks for looking!

This about as close to perfection as you can get. The choice of the model is great and your work is stunning. I think the only thing for us to debate is whether we like the return to the railing or not. I do not want to think about what can happen there. Thanks so much for sharing this terrific job!! Jim

Great work, Jerry. It's good to see the deck rail back again.

I don’t know how many times I’ve pulled my kit off the shelf and then put it back as this is not an easy kit to get right. Outstanding job Jerry.

I spent many hours in the 49 at my PC, it was by far my favorite car in Grand Prix Legends.
You did a very nice job on this one, Jerry. The straight yellow stripe is a striking difference to the typical 49 in BRG.
I always trended more towards being more pro-Clark but have much respect for what Graham and his kid accomplished in F1.
Thoughts about building another 49 in the future?

Thank you all for the kind words! I really appreciate your support of my builds!
Craig, I’m glad you like the deck, it’s about to be renovated once the weather gets better, it’ll be even better than it is now.
Jordan, I plan on building a couple more 49s, Jim Clark’s Dutch GP winner and the Gold Leaf Tasman Series car. Clark and Hill are my two all-time favorites, so it’s difficult to build just one of a car rhey both drove!

That rail has become a trademark for you. When you rebuild the deck, save that section for photos.

Beautiful work. As someone above commented above, this kit has some tricky areas. I’m finding the rear suspension a bit fussy....my wheels have a bit of a knock- knee’d look.
